Securing Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks Using Quantum Sensing: Open Issues, Challenges and Future Directions

Ubaid Ullah, Lubna Luxmi Dhirani

Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) face persistent challenges such as high attenuation, limited bandwidth, and environmental interference, which constrain their reliability and performance. This survey investigates the potential of quantum sensing technologies to overcome these limitations. We systematically review and analyze quantum-enhanced detection methods, entanglement-based communication protocols, and quantum magnetometry for underwater applications. Our study highlights how quantum techniques can conceptually improve signal detection, extend communication range, and enhance positioning accuracy. By comparing existing surveys, identifying key research gaps, and outlining a roadmap for practical implementation, this work provides a comprehensive perspective on advancing UWSNs through quantum technologies.

Current Trends and Advances in Quantum Navigation for Maritime Applications: A Comprehensive Review

Olga Sambataro, Riccardo Costanzi, João Alves +4 more

In this article, we present a comprehensive review of the current state of the art in quantum navigation systems, with a specific focus on their application in maritime navigation. Quantum technologies have the potential to revolutionize navigation and positioning systems due to their ability to provide highly accurate and secure information. The review covers the principles of quantum navigation and highlights the latest developments in quantum-enhanced sensors, atomic clocks, and quantum communication protocols. In this article, we also discuss the challenges and opportunities of using quantum technologies in maritime navigation, including the effects that the maritime environment and the specificity of marine applications can have on the performance of quantum sensors. Finally, this article concludes with a discussion on the future of quantum navigation systems and their potential impact on the maritime industry. This review aims at providing a valuable resource for researchers and engineers interested in the development and deployment of quantum navigation systems.

Quantum sensing with superconducting circuits

Sergey Danilin, Martin P. Weides

Sensing and metrology play an important role in fundamental science and applications, by fulfilling the ever-present need for more precise data sets, and by allowing to make more reliable conclusions on the validity of theoretical models. Sensors are ubiquitous, they are used in applications across a diverse range of fields including gravity imaging, geology, navigation, security, timekeeping, spectroscopy, chemistry, magnetometry, healthcare, and medicine. Current progress in quantum technologies inevitably triggers the exploration of quantum systems to be used as sensors with new and improved capabilities. This perspective initially provides a brief review of existing and tested quantum sensing systems, before discussing future possible directions of superconducting quantum circuits use for sensing and metrology: superconducting sensors including many entangled qubits and schemes employing Quantum Error Correction. The perspective also lists future research directions that could be of great value beyond quantum sensing, e.g. for applications in quantum computation and simulation.
