Continuous Time, Discrete Observations, and Entropy: A Minimal Model in Which Time Emerges from Observation

Abstract

This study presents a minimal model demonstrating how the structure of time emerges from observational operations alone, without assuming geometry, metrics, or physical laws. A countably infinite sequence of selections of generative bases determines observation, defining an irreversible arrow of internal time. Since the entire history of these selections has the cardinality of the real numbers, the completion points of observations lie on the real line. A discrete set of observation moments embedded in continuous time defines a reversible arrow of external time. Furthermore, the finiteness of entropy, defined as the finite change in the cardinality of generative bases in observation, is a necessary condition to ensure the continuity and consistency of the observable world. The continuity and discreteness of time, as well as its reversibility and irreversibility, naturally arise from selection operations in observation.

Closed Information and the Birth of Time: Entropy as the Shadow of Irreversible Projection

Yunbeom Yi

What is time, and why does it seem to have a direction? This paper develops an informational–ontological framework in which both time and entropy emerge from a single structural feature: the irreversible projection of a closed informational manifold into an observable reality. Building on an earlier “existential equation” , I represent existence as a closed informational manifold I and reality as the result of a non-invertible projection R = ΠR(I). The total informational field is complex, I = IR + iII , with IR denoting open information (what can appear and be manipulated in reality) and II denoting closed information (hidden structure that shapes but is not directly accessible from within reality). The informational norm ∥IR∥2 + ∥II ∥2 is conserved, while projection ΠR irreversibly transfers structure from the open to the closed sector. Within this ontology, time is defined as the minimal ordering structure on the set of projected reality-states {R} that distinguishes change from non-change and respects the irreversibility induced by ΠR. Time is not an additional substance or dimension laid down beside reality; it is the minimal condition for talking about change in reality. Entropy is then interpreted as the quantitative shadow of irreversible projection: a measure of the degree to which information that once resided in the open sector has become encoded only in the closed manifold and is no longer recoverable by reversible operations within reality. The origin and limit of time admit a natural description: before time, all consistent histories coexist as closed structure in I, but none is singled out as the actual history of the world; as time unfolds, the projection R(t) = ΠR(I) writes one concrete history, line by line, out of many possibilities, like a book being composed; in an idealized limit where no further irreversible changes occur, reality has the structure of a finished story—one realized trajectory among many that remain structurally present in I. The aim of the paper is not to derive detailed physical laws or to eliminate existing approaches to time and entropy. Rather, it offers a coherent ontological backdrop in which time, entropy, and reality appear as correlated manifestations of one informational architecture. On this view, time is the minimal condition for a reality that can change, and entropy is the shadow left when such change cannot be undone.

Emergent Time from Discrete Quantum Updates: A Globally Conservative Framework for Quantum Evolution and Temporal Emergence

Chadi Saad

Abstract The ontological status of time remains unresolved in fundamental physics. In quantum mechanics, time appears as an external classical parameter, whereas in general relativity it is dynamical and intertwined with spacetime geometry. Canonical approaches to quantum gravity, most notably the Wheeler–DeWitt formulation, eliminate time altogether, leading to the well-known “problem of time.” These tensions motivate frameworks in which time is not fundamental but emergent. In this work, we propose a discrete, update-based framework in which the universe evolves through a sequence of global quantum states indexed by an abstract update parameter rather than by a physical time coordinate. Evolution is formulated as a completely positive, trace-preserving (CPTP) quantum channel acting on the universal density operator, ensuring exact conservation of probability and global quantum information at every update. The framework is deliberately conservative: it preserves the formal structure of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, enforces vacuum stability, and supports global conservation laws without introducing new dynamical postulates. Within this setting, time emerges relationally at the level of subsystems. As subsystems become increasingly entangled with their environments, entropy gradients arise that define an effective arrow of time, closely aligned with the thermodynamic arrow. The resulting temporal flow is relative, statistical, and observer-dependent, while the global evolution remains information-preserving and, in the closed-system limit, reversible. We explore the implications of this framework for cosmology and black hole physics. The Big Bang is reinterpreted as an initial quantum state rather than a singular beginning of time, avoiding temporal singularities. Black hole evaporation is shown to be compatible with unitary evolution when the full quantum state is considered, naturally reproducing the expected Page curve and resolving the apparent information paradox. Overall, the framework provides a coherent, minimal setting in which time, irreversibility, and cosmological history emerge from quantum correlations rather than from a fundamental temporal background.

Entropy Coordinate: Continuous Ontic Flow, Discrete Sampling and the Emergence of Logic

GenMin Li

This paper constructs a minimal complete model based on the stroboscopic aliasing illusion of a rotating disc to demonstrate that intrinsic ontic entities sustain only continuous, unbroken flow, and do not carry discrete events, binary truth values or fixed causal sequences. We formulate a rigorous topological definition of the observer as a triple complying with five core axioms within a homotopy topos: section property, endogenous evolution, coupling, topological typing authorisation, and entropy excitation condition. When an observer samples continuous motion at a discrete frame rate, contradictory fragmentary data generated by beat-frequency aliasing triggers irreversible bifurcation and expansion of the higher homotopy groups forming the observer’s internal configuration space. We formalise the metric of this expansion as the entropy coordinate S, and prove it is the unique absolute measurement independent of observer perspective, sampling frequency and constructed causal narrative. Further derivations verify that the psychological arrow of time emerges as a subjective sensation of monotonic growth of the entropy coordinate; causality serves only as a self-consistent interpretive framework for configuration reconciliation; the law of excluded middle operates merely as a temporary grammatical constraint activated only after bifurcation of the configuration space. Two rigorous corroborations from theoretical physics and pure mathematics—tachyon dual space vacuum instantaneous fluctuation and p-adic completion metric-dependent convergence—support the mutual-annihilation ontology anchored to the entropy coordinate. We conclude that universal evolution is fundamentally the unidirectional flow of the entropy coordinate. Spacetime is a phenomenal illusion, causality a constructed narrative, and binary logic a syntax for observational self-consistency. The sole absolute invariant governing all ontic existence is the entropy coordinate. This preprint contains only qualitative formal deduction and core theorems; full advanced homotopy algebraic derivations and proprietary numerical operator frameworks are retained as internal private materials and not attached herein.

The Entropy Footprint Hypothesis

Su, TingChao

The Entropy Footprint Hypothesis proposes that the universe does not exist as a continuously persisting background, but is instead constituted by discrete generative events. Each generative event actualizes a single physical state from a quantum probability cloud of multiple potential states. This act of actualization is fundamentally irreversible, as unrealized possibilities cannot be restored to their original probabilistic structure. The loss of inaccessible information resulting from each generative event is defined as an entropy footprint. Within this framework, entropy is reinterpreted not as a passive byproduct of physical evolution or disorder, but as the intrinsic informational cost of reality generation. Time is not treated as a flowing dimension, but as an ordered sequence of generative events. The arrow of time emerges from the accumulation of entropy footprints rather than from macroscopic thermodynamic asymmetry alone. This work integrates concepts from quantum mechanics, statistical physics, information theory, and philosophy of time to formulate a generative universe model. The hypothesis offers a unified explanatory perspective on entropy increase, temporal directionality, irreversibility, and quantum state actualization, while remaining compatible with established physical theories. Potential implications for cosmology, black hole entropy, decoherence, and the ontology of time are discussed.

Quantum-Entropy Physics

Davi Geiger, Zvi M. Kedem

All the laws of physics are time-reversible. Time arrow emerges only when ensembles of classical particles are treated probabilistically, outside of physics laws, and the entropy and the second law of thermodynamics are introduced. In quantum physics, no mechanism for a time arrow has been proposed despite its intrinsic probabilistic nature. In consequence, one cannot explain why an electron in an excited state will "spontaneously" transition into a ground state as a photon is created and emitted, instead of continuing in its reversible unitary evolution. To address such phenomena, we introduce an entropy for quantum physics, which will conduce to the emergence of a time arrow. The entropy is a measure of randomness over the degrees of freedom of a quantum state. It is dimensionless; it is a relativistic scalar, it is invariant under coordinate transformation of position and momentum that maintain conjugate properties and under CPT transformations; and its minimum is positive due to the uncertainty principle. To excogitate why some quantum physical processes cannot take place even though they obey conservation laws, we partition the set of all evolutions of an initial state into four blocks, based on whether the entropy is (i) increasing but not a constant, (ii) decreasing but not a constant, (iii) a constant, (iv) oscillating. We propose a law that in quantum physics entropy (weakly) increases over time. Thus, evolutions in the set (ii) are disallowed, and evolutions in set (iv) are barred from completing an oscillation period by instantaneously transitioning to a new state. This law for quantum physics limits physical scenarios beyond conservation laws, providing causality reasoning by defining a time arrow.

Discrete Dynamics as the Origin of Spacetime, Quantum Probability, and Friction and Emergent Rules Beyond the Born Rule

Borz, Vanni

This framework preserves the empirical success of existing physical theories while proposing an alternative set of foundational assumptions from which their standard formulations emerge as effective limits. Abstract — Key Innovative Points Discrete Updating FabricThe theory postulates a fundamental discrete fabric whose elementary constituents evolve through local update processes, replacing continuous fields and background spacetime as primary entities. Irreversible Local Dynamics as FundamentalUnlike standard approaches based on unitary or reversible evolution, irreversibility is taken as ontological. Physical law emerges from irreversible local updates rather than from imposed symmetries or variational principles. Emergent Time and SpacetimeTime is not assumed as a fundamental parameter but arises from the counting of update events. Spacetime geometry emerges as a coarse-grained description of update activity across the fabric. Quantum Probability from Microstate CountingQuantum probabilities, including the Born rule, emerge from combinatorial counting of compatible microstates of the fabric, rather than being postulated axiomatically. Gravity as Update-Rate ModulationGravitational phenomena are interpreted as variations in local update rates, leading to effective curvature, time dilation, and relativistic behavior at macroscopic scales. Mass as Resistance to UpdateMass and inertia arise from stable topological structures within the fabric that resist updates, providing a dynamical origin of mass without introducing fundamental mass parameters. Fundamental Dissipation and IrreversibilityDissipation is intrinsic to the fabric dynamics and not an emergent statistical effect. The arrow of time follows directly from the irreversible nature of local updates. Extension Beyond Fundamental PhysicsThe same discrete framework accounts for macroscopic dissipative phenomena—such as friction, stick–slip dynamics, superlubricity, growth, and self-organization—linking fundamental physics and material behavior within a single process-based model. iversality Without Fundamental SymmetryLarge-scale physical laws emerge as dynamical attractors of the updating fabric, arising through elimination of unstable configurations rather than enforcement of fundamental symmetries. Emergent Rules Beyond the Born Rule in the Unified Fabric Framework The same discrete-fabric + local-update + coarse-graining structure generates multiple quantum rules without postulation. 1. Schrödinger Dynamics as an Emergent Long-Wavelength Limit Local deterministic updates on a discrete fabric admit spectral modes. In the long-wavelength limit, their evolution converges to a Schrödinger-type equation. Interference is not assumed. It is a combinatorial consequence of microstate superposition. 4. Tensor Product Structure and the Origin of Entanglement Composite systems correspond to composite regions of the fabric.Global microstates factorize only if compatibility constraints separate. Decoherence from Phase Inaccessibility Observers access only coarse-grained variables.Rapidly varying microstate phases average out. Off-diagonal terms are dynamically suppressed.Decoherence emerges without postulation. 6. Measurement Collapse as Constraint Reduction Measurement is an interaction that reduces compatible microstates. The effective state updates accordingly. The Arrow of Time from Asymmetric State Counting Entropy is defined as the logarithm of compatible microstates.Local updates generically move toward larger compatible sets. Statistics are invariant.Details are inaccessible. 6. Why identical particles are truly identical Microstates differ, macrostates do not.Labels are erased by update symmetry. Indistinguishability is enforced. It is not a postulate. 7. Why spin is quantized and half-integer values exist Spin counts topological winding in update cycles.Only discrete windings are stable. Half-integer spin reflects double-cover topology. No mystery remains. 8. Why gauge free
