Abstract

The theory of sequential two-photon double ionization of atoms is applied to the angular correlation of two emitted electrons upon ionization of the Ar atom. The influence of the intermediate-ion polarization on the angular correlation functions is demonstrated. The results can be used in the design and interpretation of experiments with free-electron lasers.

Angular distributions of electrons in sequential two-photon double ionization of atoms by free electron laser radiation

Грызлова Елена Владимировна, A N Grum-Grzhimailo, N M Kabachnik +1 more

Calculated results for angular distribution and angular correlation of electrons produced in the process of two-photon double ionization of Xe are presented. In particular, a peculiar dependence of the angular distribution of the second step electrons on the alignment of the intermediate ionic state is predicted. The angular correlations of the electrons qualitatively depend on the term of the residual double charged ion. The results can be used in ongoing and future experiments with free-electron laser.

Angular correlations between two electrons emitted in the sequential two-photon double ionization of atoms

Грызлова Елена Владимировна, A N Grum-Grzhimailo, S. Fritzsche +1 more

Angular correlations between two emitted photoelectrons in the sequential two-photon double ionization (TPDI) of atoms are theoretically considered. The general expression for the angular correlation function is analysed and some particular geometries of possible experiments are discussed. The concept of true angular correlations is introduced in contrast to the angular dependence of the two-electron emission from two uncorrelated ionization events. The case of a pure LS coupling description of the TPDI is considered in detail and compared with the general case. As an example, calculations of the angular correlation functions are performed and discussed for sequential TPDI from the 4p valence shell of krypton.

Angular distributions and correlations in sequential three-photon triple atomic ionization

Грызлова Елена Владимировна, A N Grum-Grzhimailo, N M Kabachnik +1 more

A theoretical description of the sequential three-photon triple atomic ionization is given within a model of stepwise ionization with emphasis on the angular distributions and angular correlations of the emitted electrons. The theory is applied to the photoionization of neon atom at 90.5 eV, corresponding to the experiment performed at the Free electron LASer in Hamburg (FLASH) by A. Rouzee et al (Phys. Rev. A 83 031401(R) (2011)).

Sequential two-photon double ionization of noble gas atoms

Anatoli S. Kheifets

We develop a formalism which describes sequential two-photon double ionization (TPDI) of a closed-shell atom. We apply this formalism to calculate the angular asymmetry parameters of sequential TPDI of the Ne 2p and Ar 3p valence subshells. Comparison with the latest experimental data is made.

Two-photon ionization of many-electron atoms

J. Hofbrucker

Until recently, the nonlinear interaction between light and matter has been restricted to only low photon energies produced by optical lasers. However, about a decade ago, the rise of free-electron laser facilities revolutionized the field of nonlinear light-matter interaction by delivering intense high-energy light pulses. Today, such lasers are used for research in materials science, chemical technology, biophysical science, solid state physics as well as fundamental research. It is the new experimental possibilities provided by free-electron lasers that motivated the work presented in this thesis. Two-photon ionization process is one of the simplest nonlinear interactions in which absorption of two photons by an atom (or a molecule) leads to promoting one of its bound electrons to continuum. This work presents studies of two-photon ionization of neutral atoms. After a brief historical introduction to the topic of nonlinear light-matter interaction, the density matrix describing the state of an atom and a photoelectron following two-photon ionization is derived. In each successive chapter, part of this density matrix is used to obtain characteristic quantities such as total two-photon ionization cross section, photoelectron angular distributions, ion polarization or degree of polarization of fluorescence photon produced by subsequent decay of the photoion. Physical properties of these quantities are studied and intriguing phenomena, such as elliptical dichroism, polarization transfer as well as relativistic and screening effects are investigated.

Photoelectron angular correlation pattern in sequential two-photon double ionization of neon

Anatoli S. Kheifets

We apply an angular momentum coupling formalism to describe the angular correlation pattern in sequential two-photon double ionization of neon. Comparison with previous work (Fritzsche et al 2008 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 41 165601 ) reveals some important differences which are discussed in terms of various ionization mechanisms and their theoretical implementations in two alternative approaches.
