Abstract

We show that there exist a series of coherent superposition states of atoms and molecules in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate with exactly balanced photo-associations and photo-dissociations,and their analytical expressions are explicitly given. They also correspond to the coherent superposition states of two kinds of hpotons in optical second harmonic generation processes, which shows exactly balaced down-and up-conversions.

Coherent Photo-Association in Double-Well Bose–Einstein Condensates

Jing Hui, Mo‐Lin Ge, Yuzhu Wang

We investigate the quantum dynamics and statistics of an interesting system of the double-well Bose–Einstein condensates in the presence of a coherent photo-association process occurring in one of the two wells. Through the analytical solutions of a simplified model of the atom–molecule condensate, our results show the important impact of initial state preparations on the atomic coherence, especially the different squeezing behaviour for the case of photo-association via left-well atoms tunnelling from initial right-well atomic condensate, which holds the promise to be observed in the present laboratory.

Squeezed Condensates

Uffe V. Poulsen, Klaus Mølmer

We analyse the atomic state obtained by photo-dissociation of a molecular Bose-Einstein-condensate. This process is equivalent to down-conversion in quantum optics where it is responsible for squeezing of the field amplitudes. Monte Carlo simulations derived from the Positive P description of the system, and approximate equations for second moments of the atomic field operators are introduced to describe the early stages of the process -- not amenable to the usual mean-field description.

Atom-Molecule Dark States in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Klaus Winkler, Gregor Thalhammer, Maximilian Theis +3 more

We have created a dark quantum superposition state of a Rb Bose-Einstein condensate and a degenerate gas of Rb2 ground-state molecules in a specific rovibrational state using two-color photo-association. As a signature for the decoupling of this coherent atom-molecule gas from the light field, we observe a striking suppression of photo-association loss. In our experiment the maximal molecule population in the dark state is limited to about 100 Rb2 molecules due to laser induced decay. The experimental findings can be well described by a simple three mode model.

Bistability and quantum fluctuations in coherent photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate

Ying Wu, Robin Côté

We show that there exists bistability in coherent photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate and investigate the corresponding quantum fluctuations. The simple analytical expressions obtained demonstrate clearly how to sweep adiabatically the frequency of the driving laser to convert a condensate of atoms into a condensate of molecules in an optimum and deterministic way.

Superposition of Macroscopic Numbers of Atoms and Molecules

John Calsamiglia, Matt Mackie, Kalle‐Antti Suominen

We theoretically examine photoassociation of a nonideal Bose-Einstein condensate, focusing on evidence for a macroscopic superposition of atoms and molecules. This problem raises an interest because, rather than two states of a given object, an atom-molecule system is a seemingly impossible macroscopic superposition of different objects. Nevertheless, photoassociation enables coherent intraparticle conversion, and we thereby propose a viable scheme for creating a superposition of a macroscopic number of atoms with a macroscopic number of molecules.
