Quantum Mechanics of the electron particle-clock

David Hestenes

Understanding the electron clock and the role of complex numbers in quantum mechanics is grounded in the geometry of spacetime, and best expressed with Spacetime Algebra (STA). The efficiency of STA is demonstrated with coordinate-free applications to both relativistic and non-relativistic QM. Insight into the structure of Dirac theory is provided by a new comprehensive analysis of local observables and conservation laws. This provides the foundation for a comparative analysis of wave and particle models for the hydrogen atom, the workshop where Quantum Mechanics was designed, built and tested.

Study of quantum spin correlations of relativistic electron pairs - Testing nonlocality of relativistic quantum mechanics

K. Bodek, Paweł Caban, J. Ciborowski +7 more

The Polish-German project QUEST aims at studying relativistic quantum spin correlations of the Einstein-Rosen-Podolsky-Bohm type, through measurement of the correlation function and the corresponding probabilities for relativistic electron pairs. The results will be compared to theoretical predictions obtained by us within the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics, based on assumptions regarding the form of the relativistic spin operator. Agreement or divergence will be interpreted in the context of non-uniqueness of the relativistic spin operator in quantum mechanics as well as dependence of the correlation function on the choice of observables representing the spin. Pairs of correlated electrons will originate from the Mo/ller scattering of polarized 15 MeV electrons provided by the superconducting Darmstadt electron linear accelerator S-DALINAC, TU Darmstadt, incident on a Be target. Spin projections will be determined using the Mott polarimetry technique. Measurements (starting 2013) are planned for longitudinal and transverse beam polarizations and different orientations of the beam polarization vector w.r.t. the Mo/ller scattering plane. This is the first project to study relativistic spin correlations for particles with mass.

N-electrons Dirac equation in Minkowski space

Ophelliam Loiselet

Quantum mechanics describes multi-electronic system by using non-relativistic probabilistic theories (non-relativistic many-body Hamiltonian, Bethe-Salpeter equation, Breit equation, density functional theory and so on).All of these theories are approximations and provide a probabilistic conception of quantum mechanics, which prevents it to be compatible with general relativity (or "macro scale" physics).Indeed, the real observable world (or Minkowski space) is for us a 3D+time space but quantum mechanics is expressed in multi-dimensional Hilbert space, which is not physical but purely mathematical. In this article we try to make a relativistic equation that gives a correct description of atomic physics in the real three-dimensional space for N ≥ 2 electrons systems: i.e a N-electrons Dirac equation. The starting point is to use the wave mechanics concept of De Broglie and Schrödinger: considering the electron as a mini oscillating cloud or matter-wave.For this we start from the Hartree equation, which gives already a 3D space description of each electron wave function. Then we jump into Hartree-Fock theory, that takes into account the electron exchange and can be also expressed in 3D, thanks to Slater-Condon rules.By extending the concept of exchange potential to a relativistic 4-exchange potential, and doing the same for the electron-electron repulsion potential, we have obtained a relativistic N electrons Dirac equation, in 3D+time space, including new relativistic interactions. The non-relativistic equivalence to Hartree-Fock equations will be demonstrated, which shows that the equation is already correct to describe light atoms.
