Abstract

The present volume is part of the 'Worldviews, Science and Us' series of proceedings. It contains selected contributions on the subject of bridging knowledge and its implications for our perspectives of the world. This volume also represents the proceedings of the interdisciplinary stream of the international workshop (Part 1) Times of Entanglement, 21-22 September 2010 at the Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai, People's Republic of China in the context of the Shanghai World Expo 2010 and related cutting-edge investigations in the quantum paradigm from discussion panels organized by the Leo Apostel Center for Interdisciplinary studies within the framework of the 'Research on the Construction of Integrating Worldviews' research community set up by the Flanders Fund for Scientific Research. Further information about this research community and a full list of the associated international research centers can be found at http://www.vub.ac.be/CLEA/res/worldviews/

Third International Workshop on Squeezed States and Uncertainty Relations

Dejiang Han, Y. S. Kim, Morton H. Rubin +2 more

The purpose of these workshops is to bring together an international selection of scientists to discuss the latest developments in Squeezed States in various branches of physics, and in the understanding of the foundations of quantum mechanics. At the third workshop, special attention was given to the influence that quantum optics is having on our understanding of quantum measurement theory. The fourth meeting in this series will be held in the People's Republic of China.

Quantum Worlds

Lombardi, Olimpia, Sebastián Fortín, López, Cristian +1 more

Quantum theory underpins much of modern physics and its implications draw the attention of industry, academia and public funding agencies. However there are many unsettled conceptual and philosophical problems in the interpretation of quantum mechanics which are a matter of extensive debate. These hotly debated topics include the meaning of the wave function, the nature of the quantum objects, the role of the observer, the non-locality of the quantum world, and the emergence of classicality from the quantum domain. Containing chapters written by eminent researchers from the fields of physics and philosophy, this book provides interdisciplinary, comprehensive and up-to-date perspectives of the problems related to the interpretation of quantum theory. It is ideal for academic researchers in physics and philosophy working on the ontology of quantum mechanics.

Time & matter : Venice, Italy, 11-17 August 2002 : proceedings of the International Colloquium on the Science of Time

I. I. Bigi, M. Faessler

Time and matter are the most fundamental concepts in physics and in any science-based description of the world around us. Quantum theory has, however, revealed many novel insights into these concepts in non-relativistic, relativistic and cosmological contexts. The implications of these novel perspectives have been realized and, in particular, probed experimentally only recently. In the papers in this proceedings, these issues are discussed in a truly interdisciplinary fashion from philosophical and historical perspectives. The leading contributors, including Nobel laureates T W Hansch and G t' Hooft, address both experimental and theoretical issues.

DICE 2024 : Spacetime Matter Quantum Mechanics

Presented in this volume are the Invited Lectures and the Contributed Papers of the Eleventh International Workshop on Decoherence, Information, Complexity and Entropy – DICE 2024 “Quo vadis, fisica?” held at Castello Pasquini, Castiglioncello (Tuscany), September 15-20, 2024. These proceedings reflect the lively exchange of ideas during the conference for the interested public and the scientific community. – For further details on all aspects of the meeting, cf. the website at http://osiris.df.unipi.it/~elze/DICE2024.html. Our intention in this series of conferences has always been to unite leading researchers, advanced students, and renowned scholars from various areas, in order to stimulate new ideas and their exchange across the borders of specialization. The meetings in this series have successfully grown from DICE 2002, 1 followed by DICE 2004, 2 DICE 2006, 3 DICE 2008, 4 DICE 2010, 5 DICE 2012, 6 DICE 2014, 7 DICE 2016, 8 DICE 2018, 9 and DICE 2022.10 More than 100 participants from all over the world attended DICE 2024.

Philosophy of Quantum Information and Entanglement

Alisa Bokulich, Gregg S. Jaeger

Recent work in quantum information science has produced a revolution in our understanding of quantum entanglement. Scientists now view entanglement as a physical resource with many important applications. These range from quantum computers, which would be able to compute exponentially faster than classical computers, to quantum cryptographic techniques, which could provide unbreakable codes for the transfer of secret information over public channels. These important advances in the study of quantum entanglement and information touch on deep foundational issues in both physics and philosophy. This interdisciplinary volume brings together fourteen of the world's leading physicists and philosophers of physics to address the most important developments and debates in this exciting area of research. It offers a broad spectrum of approaches to resolving deep foundational challenges - philosophical, mathematical, and physical - raised by quantum information, quantum processing, and entanglement. This book is ideal for historians, philosophers of science and physicists.
