Abstract

Two-mode squeezed states of light field are experimentally generated by nondegenerate parametric down conversion in an optical cavity. Noise reductions of about 30% relative to the vacuum noise level are obtained in the quiet quadrature of the electromagnetic field.

Generation of Squeezed States by Parametric Down Conversion

Squeezed states of the electromagnetic field are generated by degenerate parametric down conversion in an optical cavity. Noise reductions greater than 50% relative to the vacuum noise level are observed in a balanced homodyne detector. A quantitative comparison with theory suggests that the observed squeezing results from a field that in the absence of linear attenuation would be squeezed by greater then tenfold.

Generation of two-mode squeezed states by nondegenerate optical parametric process

Kunchi Peng, Changde Xie, Maoquan Huang +4 more

The full quantum treatment on the three-mode interaction in an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) is presented. The simultaneous resonance of three nondegenerate modes in the OPO cavity has been experimentally demonstrated. Reductions in photocurrent noise of 30% relative to the vacuum noise level are obtained for frequency offsets near 2 MHz.

Squeezed states of light

Harry J. Kimble

Squeezed states of the electromagnetic field are characterized by a reduction of fluctuations for one of two quadrature phase amplitudes below the level of fluctuations for the vacuum state. This reduction is a manifestly quantum or nonclassical feature which is of great interest in its own right but also potentially important for precision measurement with sensitivity beyond the shot-noise or vacuum-state limit. We describe three different experiments in which squeezed light has been generated in our laboratory involving parametric downconversion, intracavity frequency doubling, and optical bistability with two-state atoms. By employing the squeezed light produced by a subthreshold optical parametric oscillator, we have achieved improvements in sensitivity beyond the vacuum-state limit for the detection of both phase and amplitude changes of the electromagnetic field. An alternate route to sensitivity beyond the vacuum-state limit is through quantum nondemolition measurement, where we have suggested and are implementing a scheme involving parametric conversion and polarization mixing.

Observation of Squeezed States Generated by Four-Wave Mixing in an Optical Cavity

R. E. Slusher, Leo W. Hollberg, Bernard Yurke +2 more

Squeezed states of the electromagnetic field have been generated by nondegenerate four-wave mixing due to Na atoms in an optical cavity. The optical noise in the cavity, comprised of primarily vacuum fluctuations and a small component of spontaneous emission from the pumped Na atoms, is amplified in one quadrature of the optical field and deamplified in the other quadrature. These quadrature components are measured with a balanced homodyne detector. The total noise level in the deamplified quadrature drops below the vacuum noise level.

Nondegenerate parametric down-conversion in OPO with two KTP crystals was experimentally researched. The two-mode squeezed state light was observed when three longitudinal modes were resonated simultaneously.
