Quasi-phase-matched (QPM) difference frequency generation in a mirrorless counterpropagating configuration

Yi-qiang Qin, Silvia Maria Pietralunga, Mario Martinelli

We present a theoretical analysis of second-order nonlinear difference frequency generation (DFG) in a generalized mirrorless quasi-phase-matching (QPM) frame, aimed at a comparison of counterpropagating DFG configuration (CDFG) to other DFG schemes, in view of all-optical processing applications. Field nonlinear coupling equations have been numerically solved under the hypothesis of phase-matched interaction. The evolution of propagating fields within the material and the wavelength conversion efficiency have been calculated in dependence of operating parameters. The increased complexity in the evolution of amplitude and phase for fields interacting in CDFG with respect to forward-propagating DFG (FDFG) is at the basis of a dramatic increase in the wavelength conversion efficiency under particular settings of device parameters.

Cascading phase shift and multivalued response in counterpropagating frequency-nondegenerate parametric amplifiers

Katia Gallo, Pascal A. Baldi, Marc de Micheli +2 more

We propose and analyze a novel geometry for all-optical processing of low-power signals that is based on a frequency-nondegenerate counterpropagating parametric amplifier. The stationary response in the cascading regime exhibits multivalued solutions with enhanced nonlinear phase shifts. Implementation in a quasi-phase-matched LiNbO(3) waveguide is discussed.

Cascaded nonlinear phase shifts in quasi-phase-matched structures

Ke Wang, Liejia Qian, Dongfang Zhang +2 more

Cascaded nonlinear phase shifts via second-harmonic generation are theoretically studied for quasi-phase-matched (QPM) structures. Both the effective phase mismatch and the structure itself contribute to the resultant nonlinear phase shift. Depending on the sign of the effective phase mismatch, structural contribution may enhance or depress the nonlinear phase shift. The fundamental wave will experience a nonlinear phase shift even if the effective phase matching is satisfied. By properly designing the effective phase mismatch, QPM structures with large material-based phase mismatch may provide large nonlinear phase shifts before saturation.
