Persistent subradiant correlations in a random driven Dicke model

N. V. Leppenen, Alexander N. Poddubny

We study theoretically the driven-dissipative dynamics of an array of two-level emitters, coupled to a single photonic mode, in the presence of disorder in the resonant frequencies. We introduce the notion of subradiant correlations in the dynamics, corresponding to the eigenstates of the Liouvillian with a low decay rate, that can also oscillate in time. While the usual collective subradiant states do not survive the emitter resonant frequency fluctuations, these subradiant correlations are immune to such a type of disorder. These long-living correlations exist in finite-size systems, when their lifetime is parametrically longer than in the so-called Dicke time crystal phase.

Scaling law for optimal excitation storage and superradiant release in waveguide QED systems

Wei Chen, Kuan-Ting Lin, Guin-Dar Lin +1 more

Driven-dissipative quantum emitters provide a powerful platform for controllable excitation storage and release, with promising applications in quantum batteries and quantum storage. Yet, transient excitation transfer in collective many-body systems is often obscured by the intricate interplay among coherent driving, dissipation, and correlation dynamics. Here, we uncover a scalable excitation-storage mechanism in two emitter ensembles coupled to a semi-infinite waveguide. A coherently driven ensemble acts as an effective excitation reservoir, while a second ensemble positioned near a dissipative node serves as a subradiant storage medium. Surprisingly, when the driven ensemble largely exceeds the storage ensemble in size, the transfer dynamics enters a nearly correlation-free regime, allowing the driven ensemble to behave effectively as a classical excitation source. This reveals a simple scaling law for optimal excitation transfer, under which the storage ensemble approaches near-complete population inversion as the driven ensemble size increases. Building on this mechanism, we propose a three-stage storage-and-release protocol enabling fast excitation storage and controllable photon emission. Our results demonstrate how coherent and dissipative collective interactions can be jointly harnessed for quantum energy storage and programmable nonequilibrium dynamics in waveguide QED platforms.

How Subradiance Enables Nonlinearity in Weakly Driven Quantum Arrays

Orazio Scarlatella, Nigel R. Cooper

Harnessing the nonlinear response of a medium is essential for applications including frequency conversion and light amplification, as well as for the generation of quantum many-body correlations of light or matter. However, achieving these effects typically requires high drive intensities and thick samples, which induce undesired heating effects that typically suppress quantum correlations. In this work, we demonstrate that atom-thin arrays of quantum emitters exhibit a robust nonlinear response even at arbitrarily weak drive intensities. This discovery challenges the long-held assumption that weakly driven ensembles behave classically; instead, we reveal that subradiant states provide a dominant nonlinear contribution that persists in the low-intensity limit. Using a Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT) approach, we predict that these nonlinearities generate a quantum-correlated steady state composed of interacting pairs of subradiant excitations, characterized by long-range correlations and multi-mode squeezing. Our findings establish a new frontier for nonlinear quantum optics at minimal power, and provide a scalable protocol for preparing multimode squeezing, offering potential for applications in quantum metrology.
