Abstract

We use the spin-boson model to describe the dynamics of a two-level atom interacting with Fabry-P\'erot cavity modes. We solve the Schr\"odinger equation for the system-bath model without the Born-Markov approximation to derive the non-Markovian reduced dynamics of the qubit. We further construct an exact Lindblad-type master equation for it. Similar to the quantum Otto cycle, we construct a non-Markovian quasicyclic process based on the atom-cavity interactions, which we call the quasi-Otto cycle. For judicious choices of input state and parameters, the quasicycle can be more efficient as a quantum engine than the Otto cycle. We also show that if the quasicycle is repeated multiple times, the efficiency of the quasi-Otto engine asymptotically approaches that of the Otto engine.

Role of System-Bath Interaction in Non-Markovian Quantum Brownian Otto Cycles

Haena Shim, Joonhyun Yeo

We study finite-time quantum Otto cycles whose working medium is a harmonic oscillator undergoing a quantum Brownian motion described by the Caldeira-Leggett model when the oscillator is in contact with heat baths in isochoric processes. The time evolution of the Otto cycle is studied by analytically solving the exact Heisenberg-Langevin equations for the system variables and the interaction energy between the system and the bath. This enables us to investigate non-Markovian strong-coupling effects on the quantum Otto cycle. We obtain cyclic steady states and study the thermodynamic properties of the Otto cycle for various values of the parameters describing the heat baths and the coupling between the system and the bath. We compare our results with those obtained in the Markovian limit, where the time evolution is described by the Lindblad equation. We find that the change in the interaction energy during the isochoric process contributes to both work and heat and plays a crucial role in determining the thermodynamic behavior of the cycle. This is in contrast to the behavior of the state observables of the working medium, which show relatively small change compared to the Markovian counterparts. We find that non-Markovian effects only become significant when we consider thermodynamic fluxes such as work and heat with the system-bath interaction fully taken into account. We also compare our results with the power-efficiency trade-off relation recently proposed for the Markovian quantum Otto engine.

Strongly coupled quantum Otto cycle with single qubit bath

Sagnik Chakraborty, Arpan Das, Dariusz Chruściński

We discuss a model of a closed quantum evolution of two qubits where the joint Hamiltonian is so chosen such that one of the qubits acts as a bath and thermalizes the other qubit which is acting as the system. The corresponding exact master equation for the system is derived. Interestingly, for a specific choice of parameters the master equation takes the Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan (GKLS) form, with constant coefficients representing pumping and damping of a single qubit system. Based on this model we construct an Otto cycle connected to a single qubit bath and study its thermodynamic properties. Our analysis goes beyond the conventional weak coupling scenario and illustrates the effects of finite baths, including non-Markovianity. We find closed form expressions for efficiency (coefficient of performance), power (cooling power) for the heat engine regime (refrigerator regime), and for different modifications of the joint Hamiltonian.

Spin-boson model under dephasing: Markovian versus non-Markovian dynamics

Naushad Ahmad Kamar, Daniel A. Paz, Mohammad F. Maghrebi

The spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath, is extensively studied as a paradigmatic dissipative quantum system, exhibiting rich dynamical behavior and even a localization transition in the strong coupling regime. Here, we additionally consider dephasing as a source of Markovian dissipation on top of the non-Markovian dynamics due to an Ohmic bath, and investigate the dynamics of the spin. We show that the characteristic frequency of the spin dynamics, while strongly renormalized by the bosonic bath, changes in a simple fashion (or does not change at all) with dephasing. To obtain these results, we develop an exact nonperturbative method known as the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation, mimicking the Ohmic bath via a stochastic magnetic field combined with the Lindblad quantum master equation due to dephasing, which allows us to numerically compute the dynamics. Furthermore, we derive weak-coupling analytic results utilizing the well-known noninteracting blip approximation. Our findings are relevant to quantum simulation of the spin-boson model in the regime of strong coupling in trapped ions and circuit QED architectures among others.

Dynamically emergent quantum thermodynamics: Non-Markovian Otto cycle

Irene Ada Picatoste, Alessandra Colla, Heinz‐Peter Breuer

Employing a recently developed approach to dynamically emergent quantum thermodynamics, we revisit the thermodynamic behavior of the quantum Otto cycle with a focus on memory effects and strong system-bath couplings. Our investigation is based on an exact treatment of non-Markovianity by means of an exact quantum master equation, modeling the dynamics through the Fano-Anderson model featuring a peaked environmental spectral density. By comparing the results to the standard Markovian case, we find that non-Markovian baths can induce work transfer to the system, and identify specific parameter regions which lead to enhanced work output and efficiency of the cycle. In particular, we demonstrate that these improvements arise when the cycle operates in a frequency interval which contains the peak of the spectral density. This can be understood from an analysis of the renormalized frequencies emerging through the system-bath couplings. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Non-Markovian master equation for interacting qubits coupled to a bosonic bath: analytic form and asymptotic approximation

Tai-Yin Chiu

Non-Markovian dynamics of two interacting two-level qubits coupled to a bosonic bath was previously studied using the quantum-state-diffusion (QSD) equation, where a stochastic state is used to describe the system. In this study, we provide another perspective on this system by deriving the analytic form of the master equation, which describes the system with a reduced density matrix. Then, we validate the master equation by examining entanglement generation and state purity. In addition, with the master equation, we observe the effects from first-order noise and notice that a good asymptotic approximation to the master equation can be made by neglecting the first-order noise.
