Bell state measurement locally explained

Abstract Entangled quantum systems can connect to the environment by means of a Bell state measurement. This is true for instance for teleportation and entanglement swapping. While the results are well understood it is not quite clear if they involve nonlocal action or if they are determined in advance. Models based on the fact that the partners of an entangled pair have the same value of a statistical parameter do not apply here. Therefore, in this work a model is presented which reproduces the quantum mechanical predictions for expectation values with spin measurements, but is not based on shared statistical parameters. The coupling of the entangled particles is instead based on the conservation of the spin angular momentum. The model refutes Bell's theorem and explains teleportation and entanglement swapping in a local manner as well. Multilevel entanglements can also be explained locally by the model. The manuscript is thus a step forward towards a complete theory describing quantum physical reality as thought possible by Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen.

What connects entangled photons?

Entangled quantum systems can connect to the environment via a Bell state measurement. This applies, for example, to teleportation and entanglement swapping. Although the results are well understood, it is not entirely clear whether they involve nonlocal action or whether they are predetermined. This can best be decided from a model, provided it predicts the key measurement results. Models based on the fact that the partners of an entangled pair have the same value of a statistical parameter cannot be applied here. This is because the partner particles of the resulting entangled states after a teleportation or an entanglement swapping never had contact before. The question then is, what connects entangled photons? Therefore, this paper presents a local realistic model that reproduces the quantum mechanical predictions for expectation values with polarization measurements, but is not based on shared statistical parameters. Instead, the coupling of the entangled particles is based on initial conditions and conservation of spin angular momentum. The model refutes Bell's theorem and also explains teleportation and entanglement swapping in a local way. The manuscript is thus a step forward toward a complete theory describing quantum physical reality as thought possible by Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen.

Orbital angular momentum entanglement

Entanglement in higher dimensions is an attractive concept that is a chal- lenge to realise experimentally. To this end, the entanglement of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons holds promise. The OAM state-space is discrete and theoretically unbounded. In the work that follows, we investi- gate various aspects of OAM entanglement. We show how the correlations in OAM and its conjugate variable, angular position, are determined by phase- matching and the shape of the pump beam in spontaneous parametric down- conversion. We implement tests of quantum mechanics which have been previously done for other variables. We show the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox for OAM and angle, supporting the incompatibility of quantum me- chanics with locality and realism. We demonstrate violations of Bell-type inequalities, thereby discounting local hidden variables for describing the correlations we observe. We show the Hardy paradox using OAM, again highlighting the nonlocal nature of quantum mechanics. We demonstrate violations of Leggett-type inequalities, thereby discounting nonlocal hidden variables for describing correlations. Lastly, we have looked into the entan- glement of topological vortex structures formed from a special superposition of OAM modes and show violations of Bell-type inequalities confined to a finite, isolated volume.

A New Paradigm for Quantum Nonlocality

Bell's theorem basically states that local hidden variable theory cannot predict the correlations produced by quantum mechanics. It is based on the assumption that Alice and Bob can choose measurements from a measurement set containing multiple elements. We establish a new paradigm that departs from Bell's paradigm by assuming that there are no choices for Alice and Bob and that the measurements Alice and Bob will make are fixed from the start. We include a process of quantum computation in our model. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to connect quantum computation and nonlocality, the two faces of entanglement.

A model independent study of nonlocality with polarization entangled photons

Nonlocality as a fundamental aspect of quantum mechanics is witnessed by violation of Bell inequality or its variants, for which all relevant studies assume some correlations exhibited by local realistic theories. The strategy of Bell's theorem is to establish some criteria to distinguish local realistic theories from quantum mechanics with respect to the nonlocal nature of entangled systems. Here we propose a model independent study of nonlocality that needs not to assume any local theory since observation of the expected nonlocal effect is straightforward quantum mechanically. Our proposal involves a bipartite polarization-entangled system in which one photon immediately reduces into a circular-polarization (CP) state when its partner at a space-like distance is detected in another CP state. The state reduction of the photon can be mechanically monitored because a CP photon carries angular momentum and exerts a torque on a half-wave plate whose mechanical motion is measurable, which is well described by quantum mechanics and independent of any local realistic assumption.
