Abstract

We present two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy simulations for arbitrary inhomogeneity. We demonstrate a quantitative fitting procedure, based on these simulations, to extract the homogeneous broadening and non-Gaussian inhomogeneous distribution of excitons in GaAs semiconductor quantum wells.

Two-Dimensional Coherent Spectroscopy of Strained GaAs

Alan D. Bristow, Brian L. Wilmer, Daniel Webber +1 more

For 2D coherent spectroscopy of thick GaAs layers, increasing strain shows that separation between heavy- and light-hole excitons increases, strength of off-diagonal coherences become asymmetric, homogenous linewidths increase and become distinct, and inhomogeneous broadening increases.

Coherent Excitation Spectroscopy on Inhomogeneous Exciton Ensembles

A. Euteneuer, E. Finger, Martin Rudolf Hofmann +7 more

A new spectroscopic technique is demonstrated on three characteristically different semiconductor quantum-well samples. Coherent excitation spectroscopy reveals coherent coupling and effectively suppresses the signatures of inhomogeneous broadening and incoherent transfer between various excitonic states in quantum wells. Coherently coupled homogeneous subsystems are analyzed in an inhomogeneously broadened excitonic ensemble.

Coherent coupling in inhomogeneously broadened exciton ensembles

E. Finger, S. Kraft, A. Euteneuer +6 more

Summary form only given. Inhomogeneous broadening is the most obvious consequence of disorder, and an inhomogeneously broadened exciton line might be considered as a superposition of homogeneously broadened subensembles of excitons. However, a possible coherent coupling in inhomogeneously broadened exciton ensemble structures leads to effects like disorder induced dephasing. We study the excitonic structure of various semiconductor quantum wells with different types and strengths of disorder by means of coherent excitation spectroscopy.

Width dependent disorder and many-body effects in gallium arsenide quantum wells

We study many body effects and disorder in both narrow and wide quantum wells with two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy. The inhomogeneous linewidth, homogeneous linewidth, and exictation induced dephasing depend on width in AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells.

Influence of Inhomogeneous Broadening on Quantum Beats

John Erland, K.‐H. Pantke, Vygantas Mizeikis +2 more

Current issues in the study of light-matter interactions are coherence and quantum interference. With ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy such as transient four-wave mixing (TFWM) the imposed coherence on the optical excitations in e.g. GaAs multiple quantum wells has been studied. In this contribution, we study the influence of inhomogeneous broadening on quantum beats observed by spectrally resolved TFWM. In artificially grown semiconductor structures as e.g. quantum wells, inhomogeneities due to interface-disorder has, up till now, been inevitable. In the experiments, the light-hole exciton (lhx) and the heavy-hole exciton (hhx) in a 100 Å GaAs multiple quantum well are excited simultaneously with 150 fs pulses from a self mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. The spectral profile is shown in the inset of Fig. 1.

Optical dephasing and transient grating experiments on 2-D excitons in GaAs single quantum wells

A. Honold, Lothar Schultheis, J. Kühl +1 more

Optical transitions of 2-D excitons are believed to represent a typical model for inhomogeneous line broadening due to the well width fluctuations of the quantum wells.1 Because of the inhomogeneous broadening and its specified relaxation processes (relaxation of delocalized excitons to localized states), it is difficult to obtain information on the intrinsic relaxation times of delocalized excitons in such multiple-quantum-well structures.
