We demonstrated discrete frequency-bin entanglement generation via a Hong-Ou-Mandel type interference of orthogonally polarized biphotons. By tuning the temporal distinguishability in the HOM-type interference, we generated high-dimensional frequency-bin entanglement characterized via temporal quantum beating.
Quantum entanglement is a vital resource in quantum information processing. High-dimensional quantum entanglement offers advantages that classical systems cannot surpass, particularly in enhancing channel capacity, improving system noise resilience, and increasing sensitivity to external environments. The construction of multimode entanglement in the spectral domain is well-suited for fiber-optic systems. Here, we present a straightforward scheme for generating multimode frequency-bin entanglement using a semiconductor chip through a simple mode conversion. A general model for Hong–Ou–Mandel (HOM) interference with a multimode frequency-bin entangled state is presented and applied to the experiments. The multimode entangled photons we produced exhibit HOM interference with a high-visibility beating pattern, demonstrating a strong relationship with the mode number, mode spacing, and the profile of the single mode. Building on the Fisher information analysis, we explore the relationship between the features in multimode entangled state interference traces and the precision of interferometric measurements even in the presence of experimental nonidealities. This work may deepen the understanding of multimode frequency-bin entanglement and advance the application of multimode HOM interference in quantum sensing.
Abstract High-dimensional quantum entanglement is currently one of the most prolific fields in quantum information processing due to its high information capacity and error resilience. A versatile method for harnessing high-dimensional entanglement has long been hailed as an absolute necessity in the exploration of quantum science and technologies. Here we exploit Hong-Ou-Mandel interference to manipulate discrete frequency entanglement in arbitrary-dimensional Hilbert space. The generation and characterization of two-, four- and six-dimensional frequency entangled qudits are theoretically and experimentally investigated, allowing for the estimation of entanglement dimensionality in the whole state space. Additionally, our strategy can be generalized to engineer higher-dimensional entanglement in other photonic degrees of freedom. Our results may provide a more comprehensive understanding of frequency shaping and interference phenomena, and pave the way to more complex high-dimensional quantum information processing protocols.
We report a simple scheme for direct generation of frequency-bin entangled photon pairs via spontaneous parametric downconversion. Our fabricated nonlinear optical crystal with two different poling periods can simultaneously satisfy two different, spectrally symmetric nondegenerate quasi-phase-matching conditions, enabling the direct generation of entanglement in two discrete frequency-bin modes. Our produced photon pairs exhibited Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with high-visibility beating oscillations- a signature of two-mode frequency-bin entanglement. Moreover, we demonstrate deterministic entanglement-mode conversion from frequency-bin to polarization modes, with which our source can be more versatile for various quantum applications. Our scheme can be extended to direct generation of high-dimensional frequency-bin entanglement, and thus will be a key technology for frequency-multiplexed optical quantum information processing.
Abstract Photons’ frequency degree of freedom is promising to realize large‐scale quantum information processing. Quantum frequency combs (QFCs) generated in integrated nonlinear microresonators can produce multiple frequency modes with narrow linewidth. Here, polarization‐entangled QFCs are utilized to generate discrete frequency‐bin entangled states. Fourteen pairs of polarization‐entangled photons with different frequencies are simultaneously transformed into frequency‐bin entangled states. The characteristic of frequency‐bin entanglement is demonstrated by Hong‐Ou‐Mandel interference, which can be performed with single or multiple frequency pairs in parallel. This work paves the way for harnessing large‐scale frequency‐bin entanglement and converting between different degrees of freedom in quantum information processing.
Entanglement and quantum interference are key ingredients in a variety of quantum information processing tasks. Harnessing the generation and characterization of entanglement in high-dimensional state spaces is a necessary prerequisite towards practical quantum protocols. Here, we use quantum interference on a beam splitter to engineer hyperentanglement in polarization and discrete frequency degrees of freedom (DOF). We show how independent measurements of polarization and frequency DOF allow for both the verification and, strictly stronger requirement, also the certification of high-dimensional entanglement in the combined state space. These results may indicate new paths towards practical exploitation of entanglement stored in multiple degrees of freedom, in particular in the context of high-dimensional quantum information processing protocols.
