Abstract

Quantum computing represents the quantum mechanical concept, may have important benefits over the traditional computing. This benefit of quantum computing offers solutions to numerous challenges in secure communication and banking that were previously intractable. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a new technology which works with a large amount of data. Securing IoT data communication is necessary. Cryptographic algorithms like RSA and ECC are the foundation of the IoT security architecture that is now in place. These algorithms’ security was significantly impacted by quantum computing. As a result, our research examines the security issues with quantum-based technologies and IoT smart applications. This article offers an overview of the foundations of quantum computing and how it affects the security of IoT devices. This work intends to present a comprehensive view of IoT communication facilitated by quantum technology. In our work, we also analyse the main obstacles to deploying quantum-enabled communication.

Exploring the Role of Quantum Computing in the Evolution of Edge and Cloud Solutions for IoT

Adeyeye Barnabas, O Adigun Matthew

The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly transformed industries by enabling the interconnectivity of devices and the real-time exchange of data. However, as IoT networks continue to scale, the limitations of traditional edge and cloud computing architectures—such as latency, security concerns, and scalability challenges—become more pronounced. This article explores the emerging role of quantum computing in addressing these challenges and advancing the evolution of edge and cloud solutions for IoT systems. By leveraging the unique capabilities of quantum computing, including superposition, entanglement, and quantum parallelism, IoT systems can achieve enhanced data processing speeds, improved security, and more efficient resource management. This article discusses the potential benefits of integrating quantum computing with edge and cloud infrastructures, focusing on use cases in real-time analytics, secure communication, and advanced machine learning for IoT applications. Additionally, it examines the technical, ethical, and regulatory challenges that need to be addressed for the successful deployment of quantum-edge cloud solutions. Finally, the article highlights the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers to drive the development of quantum-enabled IoT systems. The findings suggest that quantum computing will play a pivotal role in the next generation of IoT infrastructure, unlocking new possibilities for smarter, more responsive, and secure IoT ecosystems.

Quantum Cryptography for Securing the Internet of Things: A Comprehensive Literature Survey

Gaurav Makkar, Suman Pant

The Internet of Things (IoT) now underpins critical systems like healthcare monitors, smart home, smart grids, automotive V2V & V2X networks, and industrial controls but it still relies on classical cryptography, whose security assumptions are vulnerable to quantum computers. A large quantum computer could run Shor’s algorithm to break RSA/ECC and use Grover’s algorithm to accelerate brute-forcing of symmetric keys, undermining the confidentiality and authentication of data in these IoT applications. Researchers have proposed quantum cryptographic solutions. Quantum key distribution (QKD) and quantum random number generators (QRNGs) exploit quantum mechanics to detect eavesdropping and deliver provably secure key material. For example, chip-scale QRNGs can be embedded in IoT sensors to generate true random keys, boosting resistance to brute-force attacks. These quantum techniques provide information-theoretic secrecy, for instance, QKD-generated keys have been used to authenticate smart-grid SCADA. However, most IoT devices are resource-constrained, making direct deployment of conventional QKD hardware challenging. Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) complements quantum methods by providing algorithms such as lattice-based, hash-based that resist quantum attacks on existing hardware. Standardized PQC can be deployed via software updates on legacy IoT nodes, enabling scalable and quantum-safe security within current constraints. Researchers are exploring lightweight PQC for connected cars and e-health sensors. Hybrid approaches combining QKD/QRNG with PQC offer a layered defense. Since QKD protocols are regarded as ‘future-proof’ and PQC standards mature, their combined use will be essential for robust, quantum-safe IoT security. Miniaturizing quantum components such as integrated QKD/QRNG modules and optimizing lightweight PQC schemes for low-power IoT devices are future research directions to secure IoT networks.
