Abstract

Quantum computing is poised to radically transform the computing landscape by offering new methods to manipulate and process information. While the technology is not yet ready for widespread deployment, it is rapidly maturing, as evidenced by the exponential growth in quantum computing power and an expanding body of research. Consequently, investigating the implications of quantum computing for the Internet of Things is particularly timely. This article addresses these pressing questions by analysing the potential impacts of quantum computing on IoT, identifying key challenges, and discussing how quantum technologies can enhance various layers of IoT architecture. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the benefits and challenges of integrating QC with IoT, while establishing a strategic research roadmap for the seamless adoption of quantum computing within IoT environments.

Quantum Computing and the Internet of Things: Constraints, Opportunities and a Strategic Roadmap

Agustin Zuniga, Fatemeh Sarhaddi, Musfira Khan +7 more

Quantum computing offers promising novel paradigms for information processing, yet its integration into resource-constrained Internet of Things environments introduces severe architectural tradeoffs. While the theoretical capabilities of quantum algorithms are well documented, deploying these technologies across distributed IoT networks is limited by hardware constraints, network latency, and interoperability challenges. This article contributes a critical analysis of these limitations across the functional layers of IoT systems. We evaluate the practical viability of quantum sensing, networking, and machine learning at the edge, alongside the immediate requirement to deploy Post-Quantum Cryptography on memory-constrained microcontrollers. Finally, we establish a strategic research roadmap organized across three distinct time horizons. By outlining the progression from near-term cryptographic mitigation and hybrid cloud orchestration to long-term vision of decentralized quantum machine learning, we transition the discourse on quantum IoT integration from speculative capabilities to the concrete engineering challenges that must be resolved to realize a quantum-enabled IoT ecosystem.
