Abstract

We report on the highly-efficient generation of pure single photons in the telecom band (1450 nm-1525 nm) employing local-droplet-etched gallium antimonide quantum dots. Our development highlights a novel integrated photonic source of entangled photons that could meet the demands of quantum networks.

Broadband telecom single-photon emissions from InAs/InP quantum dots grown by MOVPE droplet epitaxy

Shichen Zhang, Li Liu, Kai Guo +6 more

The development of quantum materials for single-photon emission is crucial for the advancement of quantum information technology. Although significant advancement has been witnessed in recent years for single photon sources in near infrared band (λ~700-1000 nm), several challenges have yet to be addressed for ideal single photon emission at the telecommunication band. In this study, we present a droplet-epitaxy strategy for O-band to C-band single-photon source based semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) using metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy (MOVPE). Via investigating the growth conditions of the epitaxial process, we have successfully synthesized InAs/InP QDs with narrow emission lines spanning a broad spectral range of λ~1200-1600 nm. The morphological and optical properties of the samples were characterized using atomic force microscopy and micro photoluminescence spectroscopy. The recorded single-photon purity of a plain QD structure reaches (g(2)(0) = 0.16), with a radiative recombination lifetime as short as 1.5 ns. This work provides a crucial platform for future research on integrated microcavity enhancement techniques and coupled QDs with other quantum photonics in the telecom bands, offering significant prospects for quantum network applications.

A bright source of telecom single photons based on quantum frequency conversion

Christopher L. Morrison, Markus Rambach, Zhe Xian Koong +10 more

On-demand indistinguishable single-photon sources are essential for quantum networking and communication. Semiconductor quantum dots are among the most promising candidates, but their typical emission wavelength renders them unsuitable for use in fiber networks. Here, we present quantum frequency conversion of near-infrared photons from a bright quantum dot to the telecommunication C-band, allowing integration with existing fiber architectures. We use a custom-built, tunable 2400 nm seed laser to convert single photons from 942 nm to 1550 nm in a difference-frequency generation process. We achieve an end-to-end conversion efficiency of ≃35%, demonstrate count rates approaching 1 MHz at 1550 nm with g(2)(0)=0.043(1), and achieve Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) visibilities of 60%. We expect this scheme to be preferable to quantum dot sources directly emitting at telecom wavelengths for fiber-based quantum networking.

Quantum dot-based broadband optical antenna for efficient extraction of single photons in the telecom O-band

Jingzhong Yang, Cornelius Nawrath, Robert Keil +10 more

Long-distance fiber-based quantum communication relies on efficient non-classical light sources operating at telecommunication wavelengths. Semiconductor quantum dots are promising candidates for on-demand generation of single photons and entangled photon pairs for such applications. However, their brightness is strongly limited due to total internal reflection at the semiconductor/vacuum interface. Here we overcome this limitation using a dielectric antenna structure. The non-classical light source consists of a gallium phosphide solid immersion lens in combination with a quantum dot nanomembrane emitting single photons in the telecom O-band. With this device, the photon extraction is strongly increased in a broad spectral range. A brightness of 17 % (numerical aperture of 0.6) is obtained experimentally, with a single photon purity of g ( 2 ) ( 0 ) = 0.049 ± 0.02 at saturation power. This brings the practical implementation of quantum communication networks one step closer.

We theoretically demonstrate the generation of spectrally pure (purity ~ 95%) heralded single photons, and also broadband (~60-nm around 1550-nm) polarization-entangled photon pairs (concurrence>0.96), at telecom wavelengths via extensive dispersion engineering in silicon nano-waveguides.
