Abstract

Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables secure secret key exchange with information-theoretic security by leveraging the principles of quantum mechanics. Continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD), which utilizes coherent states and coherent detection, has gained attention as a promising approach due to its seamless integration with existing telecommunications networks. CV-QKD systems, which are built with standard telecommunication components, open the door—through photonic integration technology—to the development of devices that are more affordable, compact, and energy efficient. This paper reviews the current state of the art and highlights our recent progress toward fully integrated CV-QKD systems.

A Survey on Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution for Secure Data Transmission: Toward the Future of Secured Quantum-Networks

Mobin Motaharifar, Mahmood Hasani, Hassan Kaatuzian

Abstract Quantum key distribution (QKD) represents a cornerstone of secure communication in the quantum era. While discrete-variable QKD (DV-QKD) protocols were historically the first to demonstrate secure key exchange, continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) has emerged as a more practical alternative due to its seamless compatibility with current telecommunications infrastructure. CV-QKD relies on coherent and squeezed states of light, offering significant advantages for integration into modern optical networks. This review comprehensively explores the theoretical underpinnings, technological advancements, and practical challenges of CV-QKD. Special attention is given to the role of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) in enabling scalable and efficient implementation of CV-QKD systems. Furthermore, recent advances in machine learning have been leveraged to optimize CV-QKD performance, with data-driven techniques enhancing noise estimation, parameter optimization, and system security. Additionally, tensor networks provide efficient computational tools for analyzing complex quantum correlations, improving the efficiency and robustness of quantum key distribution protocols. These developments, combined with ongoing improvements in quantum photonic integration, pave the way for the practical deployment of large-scale, high-speed quantum-secure networks.

An introductory review of the theory of continuous-variable quantum key distribution: Fundamentals, protocols, and security

Maron F Anka, John A. Mora Rodríguez, Douglas F. Pinto +3 more

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) has emerged as a promising approach for secure quantum communication, offering advantages such as high key generation rates, compatibility with standard telecommunication infrastructure, and potential for integration on photonic chips. This review provides an accessible introduction to the theory of CV-QKD, aimed at researchers entering this rapidly developing field. We focus on fundamental concepts, key protocols, and security analysis essential for understanding CV-QKD systems, with a special emphasis on prepare-and-measure protocols using coherent states under asymptotic security conditions. We explain their equivalence to entanglement-based protocols and detail the security proof framework against collective attacks, encompassing both Gaussian and discrete modulation schemes. We also briefly address more advanced topics, including measurement-device-independent CV-QKD and finite-size security analysis. This work is motivated by Brazil's growing investment in quantum communication technologies. By presenting a clear learning path from basic concepts to advanced topics, this work aims to equip newcomers with the essential tools to engage with current research in CV-QKD, thereby supporting the training of a new generation of researchers in this strategic field.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution with on-chip light sources

Lang Li, Tao Wang, Xinhang Li +5 more

Integrated quantum key distribution (QKD) systems based on photonic chips have high scalability and stability, and are promising for further construction of global quantum communications networks. On-chip quantum light sources are a critical component of a fully integrated QKD system; especially a continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) system based on coherent detection, which has extremely high requirements for the light sources. Here, for what we believe is the first time, we designed and fabricated two on-chip tunable lasers for CV-QKD, and demonstrated a high-performance system based on these sources. Because of the high output power, fine tunability, and narrow linewidth, the involved on-chip lasers guarantee the accurate shot-noise-limited detection of quantum signals, center wavelength alignment of nonhomologous lasers, and suppression of untrusted excess noise. The system’s secret key rate can reach 0.75 Mb/s at a 50 km fiber distance, and the secure transmission distance can exceed 100 km. Our results mark a breakthrough toward building a fully integrated CV-QKD, and pave the way for a reliable and efficient terrestrial quantum-secure metropolitan area network.

Quantum photonic chip for practical high-rate continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Lin Cao, Sijin Li, Hao Yu +12 more

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a quantum communication technology that offers absolute security. Among its various implementations, continuous-variable (CV) QKD has garnered significant attention due to its high secret key generation rates and compatibility with conventional optical telecommunication infrastructure, which operates under ambient conditions. However, chip-based integration is crucial for realizing practical and scalable CV-QKD networks, and photonic integrated circuit technology is a potential solution, leveraging the on-chip integration of essential optical components onto silicon photonic circuits. Therefore, this work presents a compact, stable, and cost-effective quantum photonic CV-QKD system on a chip. Our architecture combines time- and polarization-multiplexing with high-extinction-ratio pulse generation to mitigate excess noise. At the same time, a real-time feedback control mechanism compensates for polarization drift, ensuring robust system performance. Fiber-based evaluations reveal secret key generation rates of 2.55 Mbps over 25 km and 0.737 Mbps over 50 km with 12 h stable operation, establishing, to our knowledge, a new benchmark for integrated photonic CV-QKD systems with both the transmitter and receiver on-chip. These results mark a significant milestone in on-chip quantum communication, paving the way for widespread adoption of photonic integrated circuits in future metropolitan quantum-secure networks.

Practical implementation of a continuous-variable quantum key distribution system

Leiza Hernández Aguirre

Quantum key distribution with continuous variables (CV-QKD) enables two parties to share a secret key by using coherent states of light and homodyne detection. This can be carried out by employing low-cost and mature technology developed for telecommunications. It has been shown that at short distances, CV-QKD allows for higher bit rates than conventional discrete variable QKD protocols. Furthermore, CV-QKD could potentially be employed to build a link for secure communication between two parties inside a building or campus and potentially in satellite communications. In this work, we will direct efforts into developing a fiber-based, low-cost, robust, and high-bitrate CV-QKD link. The theoretical concepts, specifics of the QKD system subsequently put into practice in the implementation, have been detailed. Finally, interference experiments have been performed parallel to the proof-of-principle QKD system.
