Abstract

Abstract Quantum key distribution (QKD) represents a cornerstone of secure communication in the quantum era. While discrete-variable QKD (DV-QKD) protocols were historically the first to demonstrate secure key exchange, continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) has emerged as a more practical alternative due to its seamless compatibility with current telecommunications infrastructure. CV-QKD relies on coherent and squeezed states of light, offering significant advantages for integration into modern optical networks. This review comprehensively explores the theoretical underpinnings, technological advancements, and practical challenges of CV-QKD. Special attention is given to the role of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) in enabling scalable and efficient implementation of CV-QKD systems. Furthermore, recent advances in machine learning have been leveraged to optimize CV-QKD performance, with data-driven techniques enhancing noise estimation, parameter optimization, and system security. Additionally, tensor networks provide efficient computational tools for analyzing complex quantum correlations, improving the efficiency and robustness of quantum key distribution protocols. These developments, combined with ongoing improvements in quantum photonic integration, pave the way for the practical deployment of large-scale, high-speed quantum-secure networks.

Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CV-QKD) is currently experiencing rapid and significant growth. This can be attributed to its capacity to increase resilience to noise and its ease of integration into current optical communication networks. In this article, we review and survey existing work on CV-QKD post-processing techniques, privacy amplification, and key reconciliation. We also classify protocols based on transmission, preparation, and measurement, which allows for a more systematic and organized understanding of protocols, as well as identifying potential vulnerabilities or weaknesses in each component and allowing for targeted improvements to enhance the overall security and efficiency of protocols. Finally, we outline potential research directions and future challenges that require attention to advance the optimization of CV-QKD technology.

Secure encryption system based on quantum access network

Yuchao Liu, Tao Wang, Y. Xu +1 more

Quantum secure communication technology, grounded in the principles of quantum mechanics, has revolutionized traditional cryptographic methods, which predominantly rely on mathematical algorithms and logical transformations. Quantum key distribution (QKD) facilitates the secure sharing of symmetric keys between legitimate parties, ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of information in communication channels. Among various QKD schemes, continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) has emerged as a viable alternative to the more established discrete variable quantum key distribution (DV-QKD). CV-QKD boasts several advantages, including straightforward deployment, reduced operational costs, and stable signal quality, positioning it as a significant component of the quantum communication landscape. Quantum noise stream cipher (QNSC) represents a technique that employs redundant data streams to encrypt plaintext. Notably, QNSC shares structural similarities with the optical path used in quantum key distribution, allowing for compatibility with existing QKD infrastructure. Furthermore, the keys generated through quantum key distribution ensure absolute security, enabling them to substitute the data streams produced by pseudo-random sequences traditionally used in classical encryption schemes. This substitution enhances the overall security framework of the quantum noise stream encryption approach. The quantum access network (QAN) extends quantum key distribution capabilities from point-to-point connections to point-to-multipoint configurations, thereby becoming an essential component of contemporary network architectures. By interlinking multiple end users with a network backbone, quantum access networks can seamlessly integrate with quantum key distribution protocols. This integration offers a cost-effective and scalable solution for user access to the network. Extensive experimental verifications have demonstrated the viability of downstream access networks, indicating that the merging of quantum access network structures with quantum stream encryption technologies can yield a comprehensive quantum experimental platform. On this platform, security keys are derived through quantum key distribution, which subsequently facilitates the encryption of plaintext information. Notably, experimental validations involving eight users have been successfully executed on this platform, underscoring its practical applicability and effectiveness.

On the Adoption of Continuous-Variable QKD in Optical Networks

Michela Svaluto Moreolo, Masab Iqbal, Arturo Villegas +2 more

Continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) is arising as an attractive technology for quantum secure communications in future optical networks, thanks to its higher compatibility with conventional telecommunication systems. In fact, CV-QKD adopts opto-electronic devices of coherent optical systems, enabling the use of commercial off-the-shelf components (COTS) and photonic integrated circuits (PICs). This favors a faster and sustainable adoption of this technology in optical networks. Also, smoother integration within the network infrastructure can be envisioned, in coexistence with classical communications, further facilitated and accelerated by software defined networking (SDN). In this invited contribution, the adoption of CV-QKD in future optical networks is discussed, presenting our recent results.

Enabling Quantum Secure Data Center Connectivity through QKD Integration

Michela Svaluto Moreolo, Masab Iqbal, Laia Nadal +6 more

The need to increase throughput and reduce the latency in the workload distribution and communications between different Data Centers (DCs) demands the use of dedicated or rented fibers. In view of enabling quantum secure communication in centralized and distributed DC, the integration of quantum key distribution (QKD) systems appears as a crucial milestone to safeguard data against quantum computing threats and the "Store-Now, Decrypt-Later" risk. Specifically, tailored technological solutions must be considered to enable practical deployment. In this context, continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) presents a promising approach due to its compatibility with optical systems and potential for cost savings and scalability. The adoption of photonic integrated circuits further enhances feasibility by enabling component miniaturization, reducing power consumption, and facilitating large-scale deployment. An important aspect to consider is optimizing fiber usage to support infrastructure sharing and resource efficiency. Therefore, the coexistence of the proposed QKD solutions with inter-DC communications must be carefully assessed. This invited contribution explores the integration of CV-QKD in DC networks to address flexible and efficient quantum secure connectivity. Envisioned co-propagation scenarios and associated challenges will be discussed, offering insights into the evolutionary path towards quantum secure DC infrastructures.
