Advances in Quantum Technologies for Defense: Opportunities and Security Challenges

Joanna Śliwa, Konrad Wrona, Marco Piani +7 more

Quantum technologies harness the fundamental principles and features of quantum mechanics, such as superposition, no-cloning, entanglement, and quantum tunneling, to deliver transformative advancements in areas including secure communications, PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing), sensing, and computing. Potential defense applications of quantum technologies include secure command and control channels resistant to interception, GPS-independent navigation systems, and quantum-enhanced radar capable of detecting stealth objects. However, quantum systems also bring new challenges and potential vulnerabilities, which are particularly relevant in the defense domain, where operational reliability and security are of paramount importance. We discuss insights into the opportunities and limitations of quantum technologies in the defense sector, as identified by the NATO STO IST-219 Research Task Group on Quantum Technology Vulnerabilities. We also present initial findings regarding identified security challenges and validation methodology.

Dynamic Quantum Decoherence Control Theory and Quantum Defense

Jincheng Zhang

This paper presents a novel theoretical framework for dynamic control of quantum decoherence, specifically tailored for application within quantum communication and quantum computation defense mechanisms. The core of this work lies in the construction of a rigorous mathematical model of quantum decoherence, followed by the design of dynamic control algorithms utilizing established control theory principles. These algorithms are actively employed to suppress or manipulate decoherence, thereby bolstering the security of quantum information. We demonstrate a shift in perspective, framing decoherence control as a controllable systems problem, which provides a new approach to quantum defense. The theoretical foundations presented here offer a robust methodology for enhancing the resilience of quantum systems against environmental noise, a critical step towards practical, secure quantum technologies. Key areas explored include decoherence rate modeling, optimal control design, and adaptive control strategies. This research contributes significantly to the ongoing efforts in quantum information security and provides a practical roadmap for developing robust quantum defense protocols.

Quantum-Augmented Privacy in Defense Communications

Christos P. Beretas

Quantum computing's quick growth brings chances and risks to defense communication systems. Current methods that protect military networks could be at risk from quantum attacks, making new privacy systems necessary. This article looks into adding quantum tech like quantum key distribution, post-quantum crypto, and mixed security setups to make defense communications more secure. Using quantum mechanics, these systems can offer secure key exchange and protection from spying. The article studies ways to add quantum-safe methods to military communication, looks at possible performance problems, and talks about how to use them in defense. The results show that a layered approach, using quantum crypto with security methods, can greatly improve security in crucial communication channels. This work helps create secure communication systems that can stand against both types of attacks.
