Quantum What? A Boundary Object Lens For Understanding Quantum Computing

Abstract

Quantum computing, a novel technology that promises to revolutionize computation, has become a topic of interest for multiple communities regarding the opportunities and challenges it might pose. Nevertheless, as it’s still under development, it’s hard to measure its potential impact on businesses and society. Making informed decisions to collaborate, understand, and develop this technology becomes challenging. This extended abstract explores the perceptions of how different communities understand quantum computing, following a case study approach adopting a boundary object perspective to make sense of the various communities' agreements, disagreements, and tensions. The data collection process is ongoing, and participation in the TREO Forum is expected to help enhance the richness and robustness of the research to make it a potentially publishable paper.

Impact of quantum computing on organizations and their technological infrastructure

Diego León Betancur Pérez, Anny Carolina Betancur Taborda, Leydi Johanna Henao Tamayo

This article investigates the impact of quantum computing (QC) as an emerging technology with the potential to benefit businesses and their technological infrastructure. The main objective is to describe the challenges organizations face when adopting it, as well as the opportunities it offers in increasingly competitive and strategically complex markets driven by exponential growth. The study also identified that, while quantum computing promises to revolutionize areas such as resource optimization, productivity efficiency, and the simulation of future scenarios—enabling better-informed decision-making and risk mitigation—its implementation encounters significant obstacles: high costs, the need for specialized talent, and new security risks. To address these barriers, hybrid models combining cloud and local infrastructure, as well as microservices, have emerged as practical alternatives, enabling organizations to access this technology without requiring substantial initial investment. Ultimately, this research contributes to the academic discussion that quantum computing is not a replacement but rather a complement that can be integrated gradually and carefully. The path forward requires efforts in education and policy to ensure accessible and ethical development, preventing it from becoming a tool reserved for only a few.

Quantum Computing and IS - Harnessing the Opportunities of Emerging Technologies

Wallace Chipidza, Yan Li, Atefeh Mashatan +2 more

Emerging technologies have a high potential for impact and are worthy of attention by the Information Systems (IS) community. To date, the IS discipline has not been able to be a leader in the research and teaching of emerging technologies in their early stages arguably because: (1) IS researchers often lack knowledge of the foundational principles of such emerging technologies, and (2) during the emerging phase, there is insufficient data on the adoption, use, and impact of these technologies. To overcome these challenges, the IS discipline must be willing to break its own disciplinary research boundaries to go beyond software applications and their related management issues and start studying emerging technologies before they are massively adopted by industry. In this paper, we use quantum computing as an exemplar emerging technology and outline a research and education agenda that will help IS harness the opportunities quantum computing offers. We propose that IS researchers rigorously investigate emergent technologies through collaboration with researchers from other disciplines. We also see a role for IS researchers in the scholarship of emerging technologies and in the process of introducing emerging technologies into IS curricula.

What is the perception of the Hungarian quantum community regarding the future of quantum computing?

Kornéia Sára Szatmáry, Miklós Kozlovszky

Quantum mechanics revolutionized our understanding of the microscopic world and laid the foundation for quantum computing. Quantum companies are developing quantum technologies, with IBM, Google, Microsoft, and Rigetti Computing being prominent players. Quantum communities foster collaboration among researchers, academics, and enthusiasts. In current paper we introduce the results of research conducted in two phases. In the first phase, the members of the Hungarian quantum community have been identified through document analysis and keyword searches. The second phase involved interviews with 14 individuals to understand their attitudes toward quantum computing and gain an insight into the current state of affairs and future prospects. According to the research data, the community’s focus remains on fundamental research, creating physical qubits, and investigating quantum phenomena, with limited practical use of quantum algorithms and less focus is dedicated to developing algorithms, despite the fact, that some respondents believed in quantum supremacy having been reached.

Quantum Computing and the Next Technological Revolution: Transforming Civilization Through Quantum Power

Ejiro U, Osiobe, Waleed A., Hammood, Safia, Malallah +3 more

Quantum mechanics principles underpin quantum computing, signaling a major shift in how we process information. While it offers immense processing power and potential advantages, it also presents significant challenges for the cryptocurrency industry. This sector has grown rapidly, supporting decentralized finance and empowering users worldwide, but it also attracts malicious actors looking to exploit its vulnerabilities. Traditional cryptography remains strong, yet increasingly sophisticated computational attacks threaten security. As the cryptocurrency market expands, quantum computing offers both opportunities, such as improved transaction security, and risks, like easier decryption for hackers. Understanding quantum technology’s benefits and challenges is crucial as it develops. Currently, data is protected by traditional cryptography, but future, more powerful quantum computers could weaken this security. This article explores potential uses of quantum computing in daily life and business, explains its functions simply, and discusses societal impacts. Its goal is to help students and general readers understand how quantum technology might transform our world through clear language and real-life examples. Topics include the basics of quantum computing, its present and future applications across industries, and its societal effects. We provide a thorough analysis of how quantum computing could reshape society through mathematical insights, practical examples, and future perspectives.

A Bird's Eye View on Quantum Computing: Current and Future Trends

Beatrice Branchini, Davide Conficconi, Francesco Peverelli +2 more

Quantum computing is a potentially highly-disruptive technology for several domains across the Computer Science field. However, many technological challenges still prevent the construction of a fault-tolerant and reliable quantum computer. These challenges sparked enormous interest in the scientific community, which led to the development of several independent strands of research. Consequently, research in the quantum computing domain is fragmented, making it highly specialized. This can lead to missed opportunities in identifying valuable research directions and contributions from neighboring research areas. For these reasons, this paper provides an overview of the current state of play in quantum computing for different quantum research areas at different layers of the development stack. Furthermore, for each of them, we highlight possible new outlooks that could be pivotal in the near future.

Shape It Better than Skip It: Mapping the Territory of Quantum Computing and Its Transformative Potential

Imed Boughzala, Nesrine Ben Yahia, Narjès Bellamine Ben Saoud +1 more

Quantum Computing (QC) is an emerging and fast-growing research field that combines computer science with quantum mechanics such as quantum superposition and quantum entanglement. In order to contribute to a clarification of this field, the objective of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it aims to map the territory in which most relevant QC researches, scientific communities and related domains are stated and its relationship with classical computing. Secondly, it aims to examine the future research agenda according to different perspectives. We will do so by conducting a systematic literature review (SLR) based on the most important databases from 2010 to 2022. Our findings demonstrate that there is still room for understanding QC and how it transforms business, society and learning.
