Ex vacuo atom chip Bose-Einstein condensate

Matthew B. Squires, Spencer E. Olson, Brian L. Kasch +5 more

Ex vacuo atom chips, used in conjunction with a custom thin walled vacuum chamber, have enabled the rapid replacement of atom chips for magnetically trapped cold atom experiments. Atoms were trapped in >2 kHz magnetic traps created using high power atom chips. A thin walled vacuum chamber allowed the atoms to be trapped ≲1 mm from the atom chip conductors which were located outside of the vacuum system. Placing the atom chip outside of the vacuum simplified the electrical connections and improved the thermal management. Using a multi-lead Z-wire chip design, a Bose-Einstein condensate was produced with an external atom chip. Vacuum and optical conditions were maintained while replacing the Z-wire chip with an atom chip with a cross-wire design. The atom chips were exchanged and an initial magnetic trap was achieved in less than 3 h.

Vacuum pressure measurement of cold 7Li atoms in the magneto-optical and magnetic trap

Xuejiao Zhang, R. X. Li, Jingyi Zhang +2 more

Cold atoms play a very important role in metrology. The ultra-high or extreme-high vacuum pressure can be accurately measured by investigating the collision of cold atoms and residual atoms in the environment. We report a vacuum pressure metrometer using cold 7Li atoms as sensor atoms in a magneto-optical trap and a magnetic trap. The accuracy, uncertainty, and feasibility of the measurements in such two different traps are studied and compared in the pressure range from 10−5 to 10−8 Pa. It is found that the vacuum pressure measurement in a magneto-optical trap is more advantageous with a higher accuracy, higher signal-to-noise ratio, and shorter measurement time under current conditions. The results may be used to realize an applicable cold atom quantum vacuum standard.

Design of a millimetre-scale magnetic surface trap for cold atoms

D Trypogeorgos, Stephen D. Albright, D Beesley +1 more

We study a novel millimetre-scale magnetic trap for ultracold atoms, in which the current carrying conductors can be situated outside the vacuum region, a few mm away from the atoms. This design generates a magnetic field gradient in excess of \SI{1000}{G/cm} at a distance of \SI{2}{mm} from the conductors. We perform electromagnetic and thermo-mechanical characterisation using Finite Element Methods (FEM). The predicted behaviour has been verified by electrical and thermal measurements on a prototype, but has not been implemented on an apparatus with cold atoms. Operating this trap at the highest gradient allows for rapid evaporative cooling comparable to that achieved by atom chips.
