Determination of the tunneling time of particles through a double barrier

Abstract

The method of calculation of the transmission coefficient and tunneling time of particles through a double barrier is proposed which takes into account the irreversibility of wave packets spreading. The resonance values of the transmission coefficient and tunneling time of neutrons through two barriers are calculated. The obtained value of tunneling time is compared with the experimental results.

Resonant and non-resonant tunneling through a double barrier

V. S. Olkhovsky, Erasmo Recami, Aleksandr K. Zaichenko

An explicit expression is obtained for the phase-time corresponding to tunneling of a (non-relativistic) particle through two rectangular barriers, both in the case of resonant and in the case of non-resonant tunneling. It is shown that the behavior of the transmission coefficient and of the tunneling phase-time near a resonance is given by expressions with "Breit-Wigner type" denominators. By contrast, it is shown that, when the tunneling probability is low (but not negligible), the non-resonant tunneling time depends on the barrier width and on the distance between the barriers only in a very weak (exponentially decreasing) way: This can imply in various cases, as well known, the highly superluminal tunneling associated with the so-called "generalized Hartman Effect": but we are now able to improve and modify the mathematical description of such an effect, and to compare more in detail our results with the experimental data for non-resonant tunneling of photons . Finally, as a second example, the tunneling phase-time is calculated, and compared with the available experimental results, in the case of the quantum-mechanical tunneling of neutrons through two barrier-filters at the resonance energy of the set-up. Our analysis appears to explain satisfactorily both sets of experiments.

A time-dependent study of resonant tunneling through a double barrier

Andrew P. Stamp, Gregory C. McIntosh

The resonant tunneling of a wave packet is studied, for a one-dimensional double barrier, by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The transmission is determined as a function of the spatial width of the incident wave packet. It is shown that if the double barrier acts as an energy filter, then the spatial width of the transmitted wave packet is increased, due to the trapping of the particle between the two barriers for a time, ℏ/Γ, where Γ is the width of the resonance. The reflected wave packet consists of two components: one corresponding to reflection from the first barrier and the other due to the particle being trapped between the barriers for a time ℏ/Γ.

Transmission times of wave packets tunneling through barriers

Yu. E. Lozovik, Alexey V. Filinov

The transmission of wave packets through barriers by tunneling is studied in detail by the method of quantum molecular dynamics. The distribution of the arrival times of a tunneling packet in front of and behind a barrier and the momentum distribution function of the packet are calculated. The average position and average momentum of the packet and their spread are investigated. It is found that below the barrier a part of the packet is reflected, and a Gaussian barrier increases the average momentum of the transmitted packet and its spread in momentum space.

Decrease of the tunneling time and violation of the Hartman effect for large barriers

V. S. Olkhovsky, V. Petrillo, Aleksandr K. Zaichenko

The explicit formulation of the initial conditions of the definition of the wave-packet tunneling time is proposed. This formulation takes adequately into account the irreversibility of the wave-packet space-time spreading. Moreover, it explains the violations of the Hartman effect, leading to a strong decrease of the tunneling times up to negative values for wave packets with large momentum spreads due to strong wave-packet time spreading.

Resonant tunnelling of wave packet

Abdelhamid Albaid

Abstract This paper examines tunnelling through potential well protected by double barriers as well as the motion of a wave packet encountering this type of potential. Various options for the left and right barriers’ penetration factors are taken into consideration. When one of the penetration factors has limiting value of 0.5, the transmission coefficients turns out to be independent of incoming energy of the particle and the width of potential well. When both penetration factors have a limiting value of 0.5, a scenario similar to resonance tunneling is achieved. Furthermore, by doing the wave packet analysis, we found that the width and height of potential barriers have a negligible impact on the probability of finding the particle inside the potential well in the limit of large penetration factors.
