Abstract

Analytic solutions fail to accurately predict the gain and added quantum noise in traveling-wave parametric amplifiers for large signal amplitudes. Thus, the underlying system Hamiltonian needs to be extended to include more and more modes in order to describe effects such as spectral leakage. For a sufficiently complex Hamiltonian, the procedure of deriving the Heisenberg equations of motion for each mode is tedious or even prohibitive. Therefore, we present a symbolic-numeric co-simulation approach, where the equations of motion are automatically derived from a given Hamiltonian using a modern computer algebra system. The resulting equations of motion can be solved numerically. We verified our approach using existing analytic and numeric solutions from the literature and found good agreement. Additionally, we simulate an amplifier from the literature, where the pump mode experiences substrate losses beyond the stiff pump approximation.

Circuit quantum electrodynamic model of dissipative-dispersive Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifiers

We present a quantum-mechanical model for a four-wave-mixing Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifier including substrate losses and associated thermal fluctuations. Under the assumption of a strong undepleted classical pump tone, we derive an analytic solution for the bosonic annihilation operator of the weak signal photon field using temporal equations of motion in a reference timeframe, including chromatic dispersion. From this result, we can predict the asymmetric gain spectrum of a Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifier due to nonzero substrate losses. We also predict the equivalent added input noise including quantum fluctuations as well as thermal noise contributions. Our results are in excellent agreement with recently published experimental data.

Including Substrate Losses and Noise in a Quantum Mechanical Model of a Josephson Traveling-Wave Parametric Amplifier

Michael Haider, Yongjie Yuan, Christian Jirauschek

Substrate losses affect the performance of dispersive readout of superconducting qubits. We present a quantum mechanical model of a Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifier, including substrate losses and the associated noise contributions. Losses and noise are introduced by coupling the system Hamiltonian to a bosonic bath, where the coupling constants can be related to the loss tangent of the transmission line substrate. Closed-form solutions for the temporal evolution of discrete mode operators in the presence of losses and noise are derived, under the assumption of a strong classical pump mode. A careful analysis of the loss-induced noise contributions can lead to the formulation of limits for the scaling of ultra-low noise qubit readout.

Capturing Complex Behavior in Josephson Traveling-Wave Parametric Amplifiers

T. Dixon, J.W. Dunstan, G.B. Long +3 more

We present an analysis of wave mixing in the recently developed Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifier (JTWPA). Circuit simulations performed using WRSPICE show the full behavior of the JTWPA, allowing propagation of all tones. The coupled mode equations (CMEs) containing only pump, signal, and idler propagation are shown to be insufficient to completely capture complex mixing behavior in the JTWPA. Extension of the CMEs through additional state vectors in the analytic solutions allows closer agreement with WRSPICE. We consider an ordered framework for the systematic inclusion of extended eigenmodes and make a comparison with WRSPICE at each step. The agreement between the two methods validates both approaches and provides insight into the operation of the JTWPA.

Modeling of Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers

Claudio Guarcello, Guerino Avallone, C. Barone +39 more

The recent developments in quantum technologies, as well as advanced detection experiments, have raised the need to detect extremely weak signals in the microwave frequency spectrum. To this aim, the Josephson travelling wave parametric amplifier, a device capable of reaching the quantum noise limit while providing a wide bandwidth, has been proposed as a suitable cryogenic front-end amplifier. This work deals with the numerical study of a Josephson travelling wave parametric amplifier, without approximations regarding the nonlinearity of the key elements. In particular, we focus on the investigation of the system of coupled nonlinear differential equations representing all the cells of the Josephson travelling wave parametric amplifier, with proper input and output signals at the boundaries. The investigation of the output signals generated by the parametric amplification process explores the phase-space and the Fourier spectral analysis of the output voltage, as a function of the parameters describing the pump and signal tones that excite the device. Beside the expected behavior, i.e., the signal amplification, we show that, depending on the system operation, unwanted effects (such as pump tone harmonics, incommensurate frequency generation, and noise rise), which are not accounted for in simple linearized approaches, can be generated in the whole nonlinear system.

Quantum Models for Flux-Driven Superconducting Traveling-Wave Parametric Amplifiers with Different Nonlinear Junction Topologies

Michael Haider, Yongjie Yuan, Johannes A. Russer +1 more

In this contribution, we investigate different types of Josephson junction arrays that are embedded in coplanar microwave transmission lines, acting as traveling-wave parametric amplifiers. For the realization of traveling-wave parametric amplifiers, different Josephson junction array geometries have been proposed in the literature. Here, we investigate the amplifier’s Josephson nonlinearity along with the gain performance, following a general method to derive the nonlinear wave-mixing coefficients from the current-phase relation of different junction array topologies. These nonlinear coefficients are then incorporated into a corresponding Hamiltonian, which is used in order to solve the Heisenberg equations of motion of the photon number operator, determining the gain of the amplifier.
