Abstract

In this study, we theoretically investigate the optical bistability (OB) in hybrid triple-cavity optomechanical systems (OMSs) composed of three coupled cavities (two optical cavities and one optomechanical cavity) in the presence of semiconductor quantum dot molecules and a Kerr medium with a Kerr coefficient of χ when the optomechanical cavity is driven by a pump laser with frequency ωp and the amplitude Ep, which results in optical pressure on the movable mirror of the OMS. The dynamical equations of motion for this triple-cavity hybrid system in the steady state limit are solved using the Heisenberg-Langevin equations to achieve OB. We have demonstrated that it is possible to adjust both the width of the hysteresis loop and the switching threshold by controlling the Kerr coefficient . t is found that by properly tuning the physical parameters, the bistable thresholds of the system can be switched on and switched off, which is useful for designing and optimizing sensitive all-optical switching .

Comparison of optical bistability in two different hybrid optomechanical systems: Impact of quantum dot molecules

Daneshfar, Nader, Foroughi, Hamidreza

In this paper, optical bistability in hybrid optomechanical systems consisting of two cavities (optomechanical and conventional) coupled to each other, which contain quantum dot molecules (QDMs), is investigated and compared. For this purpose, two different configurations are studied: in the first configuration, the quantum dot molecules (QDMs) are inside the optomechanical cavity, and in the second configuration, the quantum dot molecules are inside the conventional cavity. To calculate the dynamics of the system operators, the Heisenberg-Langevin approach is used under the mean field approximation. To achieve the phenomenon of optical bistability, which is used in optical switches and optical memories, the dynamic equations of the system are solved in a steady state. The effect of the system's physical parameters, including the detuning, the number of quantum dot molecules, and the tunneling intensity of the external field, on the phenomenon of optical bistability is studied. In addition, the switching threshold and the width of the optical bistability region in two different configurations are compared. Considering that the phenomenon of optical bistability can have potential applications in all-optical switches, optical transistors, quantum computing, and quantum communication, the obtained results can be useful for the mentioned applications and system optimization.

Bistability in a Hybrid Optomechanical System under the Effect of a Nonlinear Medium

A. Asghari Nejad, Hassan Randjbar Askari, Hamid Reza Baghshahi

We investigate a hybrid optomechanical system consisting of two coupled cavities, one of them is composed of two-end fixed mirrors (called the traditional cavity), and the other has a one-end oscillating mirror (named as the optomechanical cavity). A Kerr medium is inside the traditional cavity to enhance the nonlinearity due to the fact that it can cause observing of bistable behavior in intracavity intensity for the optomechanical cavity. The Hamiltonian of the system is written in a rotating frame and its dynamics is described by quantum Langevin equations of motion. Our proposed system exhibits unconventional plots for the mean photon number of the optomechanical cavity which are not observed in previous works. The present results show a deep effect of the Kerr medium on optical bistability of intracavity intensity for the optomechanical cavity. Also, coupling strength of the cavities can effectively change the stability of the system.

Controllable optical bistability and Fano line shape in a hybrid optomechanical system assisted by kerr medium: possibility of all optical switching

We theoretically analyse the optical and optomechanical nonlinearity present in a hybrid system consisting of a quantum dot(QD) coupled to an optomechanical cavity in the presence of a nonlinear Kerr medium, and show that this hybrid system can be used as an all optical switch. A high degree of control and tunability via the QD-cavity coupling strength, the Kerr and the optomechanical nonlinearity over the bistable behaviour shown by the mean intracavity optical field and the power transmission of the weak probe field can be achieved. The results obtained in this investigation has the potential to be used for designing efficient all-optical switch and high sensitive sensors for use in Telecom systems.

Optical bistability in coupled optomechanical cavities in the presence of Kerr effect

A. Asghari Nejad, Hassan Randjbar Askari, Hamid Reza Baghshahi

We theoretically investigate optical bistability for a hybrid optomechanical system, where two cavities (an optomechanical cavity and a traditional one) are coupled together. A Kerr medium is inserted in the optomechanical cavity and there is an ultra-cold atomic gas inside the other. Dynamics of the system is described by Heisenberg-Langevin equations of motion in the steady-state regime. Bistability is observed in intracavity intensity for the optomechanical cavity, and the response of this phenomenon to optical parameters of the system is investigated. It is observed that the atomic medium has a deep effect on bistable behavior of intracavity intensity for the optomechanical cavity. Also, we determine a critical value for the Kerr coefficient of the Kerr medium to observe bistability in intracavity intensity for the optomechanical cavity.

Controllable bistable optical switch and normal mode splitting in hybrid optomechanical semiconductor microcavity containing single quantum dot driven by amplitude modulated field

Vijay Bhatt, Sabur A. Barbhuiya, Pradip K. Jha +1 more

Abstract We theoretically explore optical bistability for the possible signature of all-optical switching and their performance in a hybrid quantum optomechanical system comprising of two semiconductor microcavities coupled optically. One of the cavity is driven by an external amplitude-modulated pump laser while the second cavity, which contains a quantum dot (QD), is indirectly driven by light transmitted from the first cavity and a transverse optical field. The generated bistable behavior due to optomechanical nonlinearity shows a typical optical switching behavior and it can be controlled by changing the laser power, QD cavity coupling, modulating amplitude/frequency and the optomechanical coupling. A clear signature of energy exchange between the mechanical and optical modes is visible from the mechanical displacement spectrum. These results suggest that the present system can be used in sensitive optical switches and optical sensors.

Optical bistability and absorption characteristic of an optomechanical system embedded with double quantum dot and nonlinear medium

Surabhi Yadav, Vijay Bhatt, Aranya B. Bhattacherjee +2 more

Abstract Objective: This paper theoretically studies a hybrid optomechanical system embedded with two coupled quantum dots (CQDs) and a third-order Kerr nonlinear medium inside the cavity. The optical bistability and absorption spectrum are analyzed for the proposed system. Methods: From the Hamiltonian which describes the proposed system, a set of quantum Langevin equations are derived. Using these equations of motion, the steady-state mean field analysis is done which gives the phenomena of optical bistability. The performance of the optical switch is also analyzed in terms of gain and switching ratio. Further, the absorption spectrum of the system is derived and analyzed from the fluctuation dynamics. Results: The optical bistability has the potential to design tunable all-optical switches. The absorption spectra display peculiar characteristics of negative absorption (transparency dip). The transparency dips are found to be strongly dependent on the frequency of the mechanical resonator. The results of our investigation reveal that the proposed system can be used as an optical switch and has numerous other applications in quantum communication systems.
