Reversible channels and isometric properties of quantum channels

Abstract

We investigate the equivalence of a reversible channel and a channel that is an isometry. Moreover, we study several equivalent characterizations of reversible channels, from views of adjoint channels, complementary channels, quantum fidelity and Choi representations of channels, respectively. Also, a channel that is an isometry has extension properties from the Banach space of all trace-class operators to all Schatten p-class operators. Finally, we get that the quantum relative entropy between any two states can never change by applying a channel that is an isometry to both states.

The output entropy of quantum channels and operations

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

Continuity properties of the output entropy of positive linear maps between Banach spaces of trace class operators are investigated with the special attention to the classes of quantum channels and operations. It is shown that finiteness of the output entropy of a positive map on the whole input state space implies its continuity. Sufficient conditions for this property expressed in terms of the Kraus representation of quantum channels and operations are presented. The characterization of a positive map "preserving continuity of the entropy" (in the sense that continuity of the entropy on a set of input states implies continuity of its output entropy on this set) is obtained and its applications to the class of quantum operations are considered. The special relation between continuity properties of the output entropies of complementary quantum operations is established and its corollaries are discussed. Continuity conditions for the output entropy of positive maps considered as a function of a pair (map, input state) are also obtained. Several applications to the quantum information theory are presented in the last part of the paper.

Twenty-one characterizations of reversible quantum channels

Nan Li, Yuan Li, Hanyu Yang +1 more

Reversible quantum channels play a fundamental role in quantum dynamics and quantum information processing. A quantum channel is reversible if there exists another quantum channel acting as its left inverse. Due to their intrinsic significance and wide applications, it is desirable to characterize reversible quantum channels from diverse perspectives. In this work, we study reversible quantum channels on finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, with particular emphasis on the case of different input and output dimensions. We systematically present twenty-one equivalent characterizations of reversible quantum channels from algebraic, geometrical, and information-theoretical perspectives. Among these characterizations, some are well known, while others, implicit in the literature or formulated in other contexts, are clarified here; the Choi-state characterization is derived in this work. Specifically, we prove that the Choi states of reversible quantum channels admit three equivalent forms: the spectral, direct-sum, and tensor-product representations. These twenty-one equivalent characterizations establish a comprehensive framework for reversible quantum channels, provide diverse insights into the structural and information-theoretic properties of quantum channels, and facilitate applications of reversibility in quantum information processing such as quantum error correction, quantum teleportation, and quantum thermodynamics.

Quantifying the irreversibility of channels

Shunlong Luo, Yuan Sun

In contrast to unitary evolutions, which are reversible, generic quantum processes (operations and quantum channels) are often irreversible. However, the degree of irreversibility is different for different channels, and it is desirable to have a quantitative characterization of irreversibility. In this paper, by exploiting the channel–state duality implemented by the Jamiołkowski–Choi isomorphism, we quantify the irreversibility of channels via entropy of the Jamiołkowski–Choi states of the corresponding channels and compare it with the notions of entanglement fidelity and entropy exchange. General properties of a reasonable measure of irreversibility are discussed from an intuitive perspective, and entropic measures of irreversibility are introduced. Several relations between irreversibility, entanglement fidelity, the degree of nonunitality, and decorrelating power are established. Some measures of irreversibility for a variety of prototypical channels are evaluated explicitly, revealing some information-theoretic aspects of the structure of channels from the perspective of irreversibility.

Unified-entropy uncertainty relations for a single quantum channel

Alexey E. Rastegin

Many important properties of quantum channels are quantified by means of entropic functionals. Characteristics of such a kind are closely related to different representations of a quantum channel. In the Jamio{\l}kowski-Choi representation, the given quantum channel is described by the so-called dynamical matrix. Entropies of the rescaled dynamical matrix known as map entropies describe a degree of introduced decoherence. Within the so-called natural representation, the quantum channel is formally posed by another matrix obtained as reshuffling of the dynamical matrix. The corresponding entropies characterize an amount, with which the receiver a priori knows the channel output. As was previously shown, the map and receiver entropies are mutually complementary characteristics. Indeed, there exists a non-trivial lower bound on their sum. First, we extend the concept of receiver entropy to the family of unified entropies. Developing the previous results, we further derive non-trivial lower bounds on the sum of the map and receiver $(q,s)$-entropies. The derivation is essentially based on some inequalities with the Schatten norms and anti-norms.

Reversibility conditions for quantum channels and their applications

Максим Евгеньевич Широков

A necessary condition for reversibility (sufficiency) of a quantum channel with respect to complete families of states with bounded rank is obtained. A full description (up to isometrical equivalence) of all quantum channels reversible with respect to orthogonal and nonorthogonal complete families of pure states is given. Some applications in quantum information theory are considered. The main results can be formulated in terms of the operator algebras theory (as conditions for reversibility of channels between algebras of all bounded operators).
