Abstract

Abstract A mode-pairing quantum key distribution based on heralded pair-coherent source with passive decoy-states is proposed, named HPCS-PDS-MP-QKD protocol, where the light sources at Alice and Bob sides are changed to heralded pair-coherent sources, and devices designed to implement passive decoy states are included at the transmitter sides to generate the decoy state pulses in the decoy-state window passively. With the defined efficient events and the designed pairing strategy, the key bits and bases can be obtained by data post-processing. Numerical simulation results verify the feasibility of the proposed protocol. The results show that the proposed protocol can exceed PLOB when the pairing interval setting is greater than 103, and the transmission distance exceeds 200 km. When the key transmission distance reaches 300 km and the maximum pairing interval is equivalent to 1, its performance is improved by nearly 1.8 times compared to the original MP-QKD protocol with a weak coherent source (WCS-MP-QKD), and by 6.8 times higher than that of WCS-MP-QKD with passive decoy states (WCS-PDS-MP-QKD). Meanwhile, the key transmission distance can reach 480 km, and surpasses the WCS-PDS-MP-QKD protocol by nearly 40 km. When the total pulse length is greater than 1011, the key generation rate is almost equal to that of infinite pulses. It is a promising QKD protocol that breaks the PLOB bound without requiring phase tracking and locking, has a longer transmission distance and a higher key generation rate, and eliminates the potential of side channel attack.

Mode-pairing quantum key distribution with a heralded single-photon source

Cheng Zhang, Jia‐Wei Ying, Cheng Liu +6 more

Mode-pairing quantum key distribution (MP-QKD) is a promising protocol immune to detector side-channel attacks and capable of breaking the repeaterless PLOB bound without global phase locking. Existing MP-QKD protocols employ weak coherent sources (WCSs) with a low probability of single-photon emission, hindering MP-QKD's performance improvement. We propose a new, to the best of our knowledge, MP-QKD protocol using the heralded single-photon source (HSPS) to significantly reduce the vacuum emission probability and increase the single-photon emission rate. Compared with the original WCS-MP-QKD protocol, this protocol has three advantages. First, its maximum transmission distance is extended from 488 km to 560 km. Second, the key rates at 100, 200, 300, and 400 km are 4.4 to 7.4 times those of the original protocol. Third, it does not change the original architecture of MP-QKD and is easy to implement experimentally. This HSPS-MP-QKD protocol has application potential in future metropolitan area QKD networks.

Passive decoy state phase matching quantum key distribution

Jiang-Ping Zhou, Yuanyuan Zhou, Rui-Wen Gu +1 more

In this paper, a passive decoy state phase matching quantum key distribution scheme is proposed based on the heralded pair coherent state light source to make the protocol more practical and safe. Without changing the intensity of the light source, we can derive four different data sets by dividing the raw key data into four groups according to the combined results of detectors in source end. The scheme can make use of the different data sets to estimate the parameters and extract the secret key. The key generation rate formula is derived after the parameter estimation. The performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed with and without taking statistical fluctuation into consideration. The simulation results show that compared with the existing active decoy-state method, the proposed passive method has slightly lower key rate when the transmission distance is short, and has obviously higher key rate when the transmission distance exceeds 406[Formula: see text]km. The maximum safety transmission distance of the proposed scheme is 452[Formula: see text]km which is relatively further. According to the influence of statistical fluctuation, the performance of the proposed scheme declines as the length of the data falls. Even though the data size is [Formula: see text], the max safety transmission distance is also more than 400[Formula: see text]km.

Security analysis of mode-pairing quantum key distribution with flexible pairing strategy

Yifei Lu, Yang Wang, Yan-Yang Zhou +10 more

Mode-pairing quantum key distribution (MP-QKD) is advantageous for long-distance secure communication, leveraging its simple implementation and quadratic scaling capacity. The post-measurement pairing in MP-QKD alleviates the photon-coincidence demands, which are essential for surpassing the fundamental limit to the key-rate transmission. In this work, we propose an improved decoy-state MP-QKD protocol featuring a flexible and efficient pairing strategy. We prove the security of the proposed scheme by presenting an entanglement model for decoy-state MP-QKD. The simulation results show that the secret key rate (SKR) can be enhanced among all distances. Notably, compared with the original scheme [Nature Communication13, 3903 (2022)10.1038/s41467-022-31534-7], the improvement of SKR is greater than 65% within 375 km in the asymptotic case and greater than 50% within 400 km in the finite case. And the achievable distance can be extended in the finite case, especially with a small block length. The simulation results demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed scheme, which is expected to promote the practical applicability of MP-QKD. Furthermore, the entanglement model could provide a theoretical framework for further security and performance analysis of decoy-state MP-QKD.

No-Interfering Quantum Key Distribution Based on Heralded Pair-Coherent Source

Lanlan Zhang, Xiangxiang Li, Hao Yu +2 more

Non-Interfering quantum key distribution (NI-QKD) is a novel QKD protocol which can surpass the limit of secure key capacity, which utilizes the characteristics of noninterference between orthogonal polarization states to obtain high key rates without interference. However, its practical application will be limited by the use of weak coherent source (WCS), which has a higher ratio of vacuum state pulses. To overcome the limitation of WCSs, we propose a NI-QKD protocol by using heralded pair coherent source (HNI-QKD), where the response of the right detector and the response of both detectors are defined as the effective events. The HNI-QKD can break the PLOB bound, the key generation performance has been improved by the advantage of the lower ratio of vacuum state pulses in HPCS. Compared to the NI-QKD protocol by using WCS, the HNI-QKD protocol can increase key generation rate and improve the secure transmission distance.

Study on passive decoy-state protocols for quantum key distribution

Yuanyuan Zhou, Xuejun Zhou, Sijie Yang

Decoy states have recently been proposed as a useful protocol for substantially improving the performance of quantum key distribution (QKD). The passive decoy-state protocol has the advantage of easier implementation, higher transmission rate and better security compared with the active decoy-state protocol. This paper analyzes the passive decoy-state protocol with different light sources, including the lastest passive state protocol with weak coherent state (WCS) and the simple passive state protocol (AYKI) with heralded single photon source (HSPS). Based on the theoretic discussion and numerical simulation, we obtain the conclusion that the passive decoy-state protocol with HSPS is easier to implement than the passive decoy-state protocol with WCS because the latter need a hardware change but the former dose not involve any hardware change on the statnard QKD scheme. The key generation rate of the passive decoy-state protocol with WCS is better than that of the passive decoy-state protocol with HSPS, but the transmission distance is less than the latter. Anyhow, the performance of the passive scheme with a threshold detector is close to the active one.

Asymmetric mode-pairing quantum key distribution

LU Zeyang, Gang Wang, Chan Li +1 more

Mode-pairing quantum key distribution (MP-QKD) can surpass the repeaterless rate-transmittance bound (Pirandola-Laurenza-Ottaviani-Banchi bound) without requiring global phase locking, exhibiting remarkable flexibility. However, MP-QKD necessitates equal communication distances in two channels, which is a challenging requirement in practical applications. To address this limitation, we extend the original MP-QKD to asymmetric cases. Our decoy-state estimation confirms that asymmetric channel transmittances and asymmetric intensities do not compromise the security of the protocol. We focus on the pulse-intensity relationship, a key factor for optimizing the performance of asymmetric MP-QKD. Unlike previous asymmetric protocols, the intensities of different bases in asymmetric MP-QKD cannot be decoupled. We introduce an optimal-pulse-intensity method, adaptable to various scenarios, to enhance key rates by calculating ideal pulse intensities. Simulation results in various representative scenarios indicate that our method effectively reduces the impact of asymmetric channel distances on MP-QKD performance, enhancing its practical applicability.
