Second-neighbor hopping effects on the dynamics of breathers in 2D quantum ultracold atoms loaded in optical lattices

Abstract We explore analytically and numerically the dual role played bythe second-neighbor hopping on the modulation instability and onthe dynamics of breathers in 2D quantum ultracold atoms loaded inoptical lattices. Via the linear stability analysis, it is shownthat the dispersion relation formed exhibits intriguing forms. Itis found that, the existence conditions of appearance of themodulational intability (MI) regions and the growth rate may besignificantly affected by the second neighbor hopping couplingstrength. To support the analytical studies, direct numericalsimulations of MI is carried out to show the generation of a trainof short waves exhibiting periodic W-shaped and V-shaped solitonswith decreasing amplitude as time evolves. The emergence ofbreathers in the regions where the MI manifests is predicted to beinfluenced by the second neighbor hopping coupling strength. Bymaking use of Rayleigh-Ritz variational method and in agreementwith the MI analysis, the analytical results reveal the existenceof the radial symmetric modes called the dynamics of breathers. The accuracy of the outcomes is checked by numerical calculationswhich show a good agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Quantum signature of breathers in 1D ultracold bosons in optical lattices involving next-nearest neighbor interactions

Zacharie Isidore Djoufack, A. Kenfack-Jiotsa, Jean Pierre Nguenang

The dynamics and the energy spectrum of an ultracold gas of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice can be described by a Bose–Hubbard model for which the system parameters can be controlled by laser light. We study by means of the perturbation theory in addition to the numerical diagonalization, the energy spectrum and the related features of the band structures of the ultracold bosons in optical lattices containing a few number of quanta interacting with next-nearest neighbor interactions (NNNI) modeled by the Bose–Hubbard Hamiltonian. The energy spectra of such system display the bound states signature, which are analyzed in the first Brillouin zone for different wave numbers. The finding, i.e., quantum breathers, shows that their probabilities’ weight depends on the wave vector. The influence of NNNI on both the probabilities’ amplitude and the correlation function is also realized in case of a system with a small number of sites, respectively.
