Dirac Point Structure in a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Honeycomb Optical Lattice

Zhongbo Yan, Xiaosen Yang, Shaolong Wan

We study the Bose-Einstein condensate in a honeycomb optical lattice within Bogoliubov theory and find that for a ${\bf k} = 0$ condensate, the Dirac points appear in the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum when $0 < β< 2$, which illustrates that the bose-bose interaction does not change the Dirac point structure but only give a modification of the velocity of the Dirac cone. When the bosons are driven to condense at ${\bf k} = {\bf K}$, however, we find that the topology of the Dirac points will be altered by arbitrary weak interaction. Furthermore, we find that the next-nearest-neighbor hopping in an isotropic and an anisotropic lattice has different effects to the dynamics of the condensate and it should be taken into account when the lattice is not sufficiently deep.

Quantum phase transition in Bose-Holstein model in two dimensions

Sanjoy Datta, Sudhakar Yarlagadda

We derive an effective d-dimensional Hamiltonian for a system of hard-core-bosons coupled to optical phonons in a lattice. Away from half-filling, we show that the presence of next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the effective Hamiltonian leads to a superfluid-to-supersolid transition at intermediate boson-phonon (b-p) couplings, while at strong-couplings the system phase separates. However, at half-filling and at a critical b-p coupling (as in the xxz-model), the system undergoes a superfluid-to-charge-density-wave transition without any signature of supersolidity. Our analyses is based on extensive calculations of the structure factor, the superfluid fraction, the Bose-Einstein condensate fraction, and the system energy at various fillings. We present a phase diagram for this system and compare it to that of the xxz-model. We also demonstrate explicitly that the next-nearest-neighbor hopping (in the absence of nearest-neighbor hopping) in the effective Hamiltonian leads only to a single transition, i.e., a first-order superfluid-to-supersolid transition.

Effect of next-nearest-neighbour hopping on Bose–Einstein condensation in optical lattices

T. A. Zaleski, T. K. Kopeć

We study the influence of the various hopping elements on the ground state properties of the bosons in the 2D optical square lattice. Using the quantum rotor approach for the Bose–Hubbard model with nearest t and next-nearest-neighbour t ' hopping, we quantify to what extent changing the ratio t '/ t affects the superfluid to Mott-insulator transition.

We study the Bose-Einstein condensate in a honeycomb optical lattice within Bogoliubov theory and find that for a k=0{\bf k} = 0k=0 condensate, the Dirac points appear in the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum when 0<β<20 < β< 20<β<2, which illustrates that the bose-bose interaction does not change the Dirac point structure but only give a modification of the velocity of the Dirac cone. When the bosons are driven to condense at k=K{\bf k} = {\bf K}k=K, however, we find that the topology of the Dirac points will be altered by arbitrary weak interaction. Furthermore, we find that the next-nearest-neighbor hopping in an isotropic and an anisotropic lattice has different effects to the dynamics of the condensate and it should be taken into account when the lattice is not sufficiently deep.
