Abstract

Impact of registered optical radiation intensity, overvoltage, dimensions of photosensitive surface, structure of p-n junction and avalanche photodetectors dead time operating in the photon counting mode on quantum optical system capacity has been carried out in this investigation. As a result, the quantum optical system maximum capacity of 81 kbit/s has been obtained.

Study of the characteristics of germanium avalanche photodiodes in the photon counting mode

Иван Романович Гулаков, А. О. Зеневич, O. V. Kochergina +1 more

A study was made of the characteristics of photodetectors for fiber-optic communication lines using quantum cryptographic systems – germanium avalanche photodiodes operating in the photon counting mode. In particular, it was established at what highest temperature the implementation of the photon counting mode is possible, and the influence of temperature and overvoltage on the sensitivity of photodiodes is also considered. An experimental setup has been developed for the research. It has been determined that the highest ambient temperature at which LFD-2 germanium avalanche photodiodes operate in the photon counting mode is 243 K. It has also been found that the highest sensitivity of germanium avalanche photodiodes corresponds to the optical radiation wavelength range of 1310÷1490 nm. Lowering the temperature leads to an increase in the sensitivity of germanium avalanche photodiodes. It was found that the dependence of the signal-to-noise ratio on overvoltage has a maximum corresponding to overvoltage ΔU = 0.1 V. Lowering the temperature led to an increase in sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio. Since there was no shift in the maximum dependence of the signal-to-noise ratio on the overvoltage, it was therefore concluded that when the avalanche photodiode operates in the photon counting mode, in order to ensure maximum sensitivity, it is necessary to select the overvoltage corresponding to the maximum signal-to-noise ratio. The results obtained can be used in quantum cryptographic systems, technical means of protecting information transmitted over fiber-optic communication lines, and for the metrology of single-photon radiation sources.

Quantum efficiency measurement of photodetectors by means of correlated photons

G. Brida, Stefania Castelletto, Carlo Novero +1 more

We report the first results concerning quantum efficiency measurement of photodetectors with the technique of correlated photons generated by parametric down conversion in a nonlinear crystal. Measurements have been performed on photomultipliers in photon counting regime and will be extended to avalanche photodiodes working as single photon detectors.

Quantum nondestructive detection of photon number in optical communication

N. Imoto, Y. Yamamoto

The quantum mechanical version of Shannon's channel capacity places an upper limit on the information transmission rate in optical communication. As shown in Fig. 1, the channel capacity depends on quantum states and detection schemes. The ultimate channel capacity indicated by the solid line is attainable by an optimal combination of photon-number eigenstates and photon-counting detection.

Measurement of the Probability of a Binary Symbol «0» Erasing in a Single-Photon Asynchronous Communication Channel with a Receiver Based on a Photon Counter

A. M. Timofeev

Receiving modules of single-photon communication channels should provide the least loss of transmitted information when measuring low-power optical signals. In this regard, it is advisable to use photon counters. They are highly sensitive, but are characterized by data logging errors. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of the intensity of the recorded optical radiation during the transmission of binary symbols «0» on the probability of erasing these symbols in a single-photon communication channel containing a photon counter based on an avalanche photodetector as a receiving module with a passive avalanche suppression scheme. The lower and upper threshold levels of pulses recorded at the output of the photon counter, as well as the statistical distributions of the mixture of the number of dark and signal pulses at the output of the photon counter when registering binary symbols «0» Pst0( N ) and «1» Pst1( N ) were determined. For this, a technique was used to reduce information loss. As a result, the minimum probability of erasing binary symbols «0» P(–/0) was achieved. The performed experimental results showed that to achieve the minimum probability of erasing binary symbols «0» P(–/0) = 0,11·10−2, it is important to select not only the intensity of the used optical radiation J , but also the supply voltage of the avalanche photodetector U, at which the dead time of the photon counter is −2 minimal, and its quantum detection efficiency is maximum: J0 ≥ 98,94·10−2 rel. units and U = 52,54 V.

The capacity of the photon counting channel

John Robinson Pierce, Edward C. Posner, Eugene R. Rodemich

Previous work has shown that the capacity of the single-mode photon-counting channel in the region in which quantum effects are most pronounced is1/(kT \ln 2)bit/J. HereTis the quantum noise temperature, andkis Boltzmann's constant. However, to achieve this, the number of photons per second must be very low, so this does not determine the capacity of the average power-limited photon channel in bits per second. Here the previous work is extended and the capacity is determined in bits per second. This includes a determination of the optimum counting time. The capacity in bits per second is for lowTasymptotic toP_{s}/(kT \ln 2), whereP_{s}is the average signal power. This is high enough to suggest that photon counting be seriously considered for applications such as a deep space to near Earth link. Some related problems are also considered including a peak power limitation.
