Generation and Absorption of Photons by a Two-Level Atom Ultrastrongly Coupled to an Electromagnetic Field

Abstract

Within the Rabi quantum model, it has been shown theoretically that a two-level atom ultrastrongly coupled to an electromagnetic field generates or absorbs photons. Photons can be generated if the field is initially in the vacuum state. Under certain initial states of the atom + field system, the absorption of photons is possible in the field mode in the ultrastrong atom–field coupling regime. If the atom is initially in the ground (unexcited) state and the field is in the vacuum state, photons can be generated under resonance condition ωa ≈ ωf or ξ ≡ ωa/ωf ≈ 1, where ωa and ωf are the atomic transition and field frequencies, respectively, in the ultrastrong coupling regime. At the negative detuning when ξ $$ \ll $$ 1 or ωa $$ \ll $$ ωf, Rabi oscillations of the average number of photons $${{\langle \hat {n}\rangle }_{t}}$$ with $$0 \leqslant {{\langle \hat {n}\rangle }_{t}} \leqslant {{n}_{{\max }}} \gg 1$$ are observed in the case of the ultrastrong coupling with the atom–field coupling constant $$\tilde {g} \equiv {\text{|}}g{\text{|/}}{{\omega }_{{\text{f}}}} \sim 1$$ ; in this case, the population of the excited atomic state is Pe(t) ≈ 0.5. At a large positive detuning when ξ $$ \gg $$ 1, photons are not generated, i.e., $$\langle \hat {n}\rangle \approx 0$$ , and the atom remains in the initial state, i.e., Pe(t) ≈ 0. The statistics of photons in the generation regime is nearly chaotic: the variance of photons is much larger than the level of the coherent field state (i.e., is super-Poisson). Field photons are absorbed without the excitation of the atom in the ultrastrong coupling regime in the case of the coherent initial state of the field $$(\langle \hat {n}(t = 0\rangle > 0)$$ for certain positive detuning values. In this case, the field becomes sub-Poisson.

A Comparison of Quantum and Semiclassical Rabi Models Near Multiphoton Resonances in the Presence of Parametric Modulation

Marcos V. S. de Paula, Marco A. Damasceno Faustino, Alexandre V. Dodonov

We compare the semiclassical and quantum predictions for the unitary dynamics of a two-level atom interacting with a single-mode electromagnetic field under parametric modulation of the atomic parameters in the regime of multiphoton atom–field resonances. We derive approximate analytic solutions for the semiclassical Rabi model when the atomic transition frequency and the atom–field coupling strength undergo harmonic external modulations. These solutions are compared to the predictions of the quantum Rabi model, which we solve numerically for an initial coherent state with a large average photon number (on the order of 104), in the regime of three-photon resonance. We show that, for short enough times and sufficiently intense coherent states, the semiclassical dynamics agrees quite well with the quantum dynamics, although it inevitably fails at longer times due to the absence of collapse–revival behavior. Furthermore, we describe how the field state evolves throughout the interaction, presenting numerical results for the average photon number, entropies (related to atom–field entanglement), and other quantities characterizing the photon number statistics of the electromagnetic field.

Cavity-QED simulation of qubit-oscillator dynamics in the ultrastrong-coupling regime

Arne L. Grimsmo, A. S. Parkins

We propose a quantum simulation of a two-level atom coupled to a single mode of the electromagnetic field in the ultrastrong-coupling regime based upon resonant Raman transitions in an atom interacting with a high finesse optical cavity mode. We show by numerical simulation the possibility of realizing the scheme with a single rubidium atom, in which two hyperfine ground states make up the effective two-level system, and for cavity QED parameters that should be achievable with, for example, microtoroidal whispering-gallery-mode resonators. Our system also enables simulation of a generalized model in which a nonlinear coupling between the atomic inversion and the cavity photon number occurs on an equal footing with the (ultrastrong) dipole coupling and can give rise to critical-type behavior even at the single-atom level. Our model takes account of dissipation, and we pay particular attention to observables that would be readily observable in the output from the system.

Two-photon Rabi oscillations

A.F. Linskens, Iwan Holleman, N. Dam +1 more

Rabi oscillations reflect the existence of a coherent superposition of two molecular eigenstates during the interaction of molecules with a strong, resonant electromagnetic field. This phenomenon is not restricted to two-level systems. We demonstrate its occurrence in a three-level system where the radiation induces a two-photon absorption. The intermediate level is (slightly) detuned from resonance. For a theoretical description the dressed-state picture is adopted. The two-photon excitation is performed either by using one laser, yielding a one-color two-photon process, or by using two counterpropagating, spatially overlapping laser beams, yielding a two-color two-photon process. Rabi oscillations are produced by varying the fluence, i.e., by changing either the laser power or the molecule-laser interaction time. For the one-color case the two-photon transition dipole moment for an ${\mathrm{SF}}_{6}$ transition has been determined from the relation between laser fluence and number of Rabi oscillations. For the two-color cases the detuning with the intermediate level is varied by tuning the respective laser frequencies while keeping the sum frequency constant. A dramatic change in the degree of excitation as a function of the intermediate detuning has been observed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Vacuum Rabi oscillation induced by virtual photons in the ultrastrong-coupling regime

C. K. Law

We present an interaction scheme that exhibits a dynamical effect of virtual photons carried by a vacuum-field dressed two-level atom in the ultrastrong-coupling regime. We show that, with the aid of an external driving field, virtual photons provide a transition matrix element that enables the atom to evolve coherently and reversibly to an auxiliary level accompanied by the emission of a real photon. The process corresponds to a type of vacuum Rabi oscillation, and we show that the effective vacuum Rabi frequency is proportional to the amplitude of a single virtual photon in the ground state. Therefore, the interaction scheme could serve as a probe of ground-state structures in the ultrastrong-coupling regime.

Multiphoton dynamics of qutrits in the ultrastrong coupling regime with a quantized photonic field

H. K. Avetissian, A. K. Avetissian, G. F. Mkrtchian +1 more

Multiphoton resonant excitation of a three-state quantum system (a qutrit) with a single-mode photonic field is considered in the ultrastrong coupling regime, when the qutrit–photonic field coupling rate is comparable to appreciable fractions of the photon frequency. For ultrastrong couplings, the obtained solutions of the Schrödinger equation that reveal multiphoton Rabi oscillations in qutrits with the interference effects leading to the collapse and revival of atomic excitation probabilities at the direct multiphoton resonant transitions.

New Quantum Effects in the Dynamics of a Two-mode Field Coupled to a Two-level Atom

G. Benivegna, ANTONINO MESSINA

The dynamics of a degenerate two-mode electromagnetic field coupled to a single two-level atom is investigated both analytically and numerically. New quantum effects are discussed concerning the time dependence of the photon number and of its fluctuations, assuming that at t = 0 one of the modes is coherent and the other is empty. The field dynamics are dominated by oscillatory net exchanges of a large number of photons between the two modes, displaying amplitude decay. Over a longer time scale, revivals and collapses in the field populations take place. The time scales of these phenomena are much larger than those of the atomic Rabi oscillations decay. Moreover, the system attains a highly non-classical regime in which the field intensity in each mode is subjected to strong fluctuations even for a large initial number of photons in the coherent mode. Various correlations between atomic and field dynamics are pointed out, and the physical origin of the new quantum effects is briefly discussed. Finally, using our fully quantized calculations, we comment on the validity of the atomic homodyne detection proposed by Wilkens and Meystre.
