Abstract

Abstract This paper presents the dynamics of Kerr nonlinearity and the phenomenon of slow group velocity in a Quantum Dot (QD) system, using the mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Employing a three-level QD setup and leveraging a ladder-type excitation approach, we analyse the interaction between a weak probe pulse and a strong control beam. By employing density matrix formalism, we derive the expressions for both linear and nonlinear optical susceptibilities, along with first-order linear dispersion terms. Our findings reveal that susceptibilities in the QD system, both linear and nonlinear, can be finely adjusted to desired probe frequencies through control parameter manipulation. Moreover, under the EIT regime, we observe the Kerr susceptibility on the order of 10−12 m2 V2 at a probe wavelength 1.359 μm. Additionally, the group velocity of the probe field experiences a remarkable slowdown by a factor of 103 compared to the speed of light in vacuum. Results obtained may have potential applications in fabricating nonlinear optical devices.

Kerr-Quintic Nonlinearities in Graphene Quantum Dot

Abhijit Shayam, Monika Nath, Rohit Mukherjee +1 more

Abstract This paper deals with the higher-order nonlinearities in graphene quantum dots as defect layer in one dimensional photonic crystal. A weak probe pulse and two strong control laser beams are employed in a close loop ladder type configuration under an electromagnetically induced transparency regime. In the system, the existence of third- and fifth-order susceptibilities are found to be as large as ~10−15 m 2/V 2, and ~10−27 m 4/V 4, respectively, at the probe wavelength 1.55 μm. The systems possessing such large nonlinearities can be employed to fabricate nonlinear optical devices, operable at much low power level.

The dispersion behaviors of the tripod-type four-level cylindrical quantum dot under phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency

Behjat Behroozian, Mohammad Reza Rezaie, Hassan Randjbar Askari

Abstract In this paper, linear and 3rd-order nonlinear group velocities of the probe laser field are investigated in a tripod-type four-level cylindrical quantum dot (TTFLCQD) with parabolic potential in electromagnetically induced transparency. The nonlinear refractive index for this system is calculated by obtaining the real part of the 1st and 3rd-order susceptibilities. Afterward, linear and 3rd-order nonlinear group velocities are found. The control lasers at z-polarization are applied to the system in order to investigate the linear and 3rd-order nonlinear group velocities and the results are discussed. The linear and 3rd-order nonlinear group velocities are compared at z-polarization. Furthermore, the effects of parameters of TTFLCQD and control lasers on linear and 3rd-order nonlinear group velocities are explored. Finally, 3rd-order nonlinear group velocity for z- and x-polarization is compared.

The effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system

Le Van Doai

Abstract We propose an analytical model to study the effect of giant Kerr nonlinearity on group velocity of probe light in a six-level inverted-Y atomic system under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In this scheme, a nonlinearity of the medium is enhanced greatly around in three spectral regions corresponding to transparent windows. As a consequence, such a giant Kerr nonlinearity of the medium changes significantly group index for probe light which can obstruct light slowdown. Moreover, this model shows also that the probe propagation can switch between subluminal and superluminal modes in three EIT windows by adjusting the parameters of the signal and coupling fields. Such analytical model is not only convenient for considering the influence of laser parameters on group velocity but is also easy used to fit the experimental results.

Manipulation of pulse propagation via tunable electromagnetically induced transparency in a (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dot system

Muhammad Idrees, Fazal Badshah, Zareen Abdulhameed Khan

This study investigates the tunable propagation of optical pulses in a three-level system of coupled quantum dots. The system forms an effective closed configuration, supporting strong quantum coherence and controllable light–matter interactions. Using the density matrix formalism, we analyze the quantum dynamical response under the influence of both a weak probe and a strong control field, with inter-dot tunneling acting as a key tunable parameter. Our results reveal that both the tunneling strength (Te) and control field Rabi frequency (Ωc) play crucial roles in shaping the system’s optical properties. We observe the emergence of electromagnetically induced transparency-like windows, the splitting and shifting of dispersion peaks, and the formation of absorption doublets and transparency windows. The real and imaginary parts of the electric permittivity exhibit pronounced sensitivity to these external controls. Furthermore, the group index and group velocity are shown to be highly tunable, enabling transitions between slow-light and fast-light regimes. Detailed analysis of temporal pulse dynamics demonstrates the ability to achieve controllable delay and advancement of optical pulses, depending on the interaction between Te and Ωc. These findings highlight the potential of such quantum dot systems for dynamic photonic control, including applications in optical buffering, reconfigurable delay lines, coherent switching, and quantum information processing. The demonstrated tunability and coherence effects make this platform a promising candidate for next-generation optoelectronic and quantum photonic technologies.

Giant quintic nonlinearities at slow light level in semiconductor quantum wells

Nitu Borgohain, Swapan Konar

Enhancement of higher order nonlinear susceptibilities are investigated in three level quantum well with a ladder configuration in the regime of electromagnetically induced transparency. We have identified the existence of giant third and fifth order nonlinear susceptibilities of the order ~10-22 m4/V4 at pump wavelength of 9.6 μm. The group velocity is reported to be slowed down by 104 times compared to the speed of light in vacuum.

Kerr nonlinearity and nonlinear absorption coefficient in a four-level M-model cylindrical quantum dot under the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency

Behjat Behroozian, Hassan Randjbar Askari

Abstract The Kerr nonlinearity and the nonlinear absorption coefficient in a four-level M-model of a GaAs cylindrical quantum dot (QD) with parabolic potential under electromagnetically induced transparency are investigated. By solving the density matrix equations in the steady-state, the third order susceptibility is obtained. Then, by using the real and imaginary parts of third order susceptibility, the Kerr nonlinearity and the nonlinear absorption coefficient, respectively, for this system are computed. The effects of the radius and height of the cylindrical QD are then investigated. In addition, the effects of the control laser fields on the Kerr nonlinearity and the nonlinear absorption coefficient are investigated.
