Many computing applications are being developed and applied in almost every aspect of life and in every discipline. With increasing number of problems and complexities, there is requirement for more computational power, faster speed and better results. To overcome these computational barriers, quantum computers, which are based on principles of quantum mechanics were introduced. Faster computation is the main reason behind the evolution of quantum computers which is achieved by using quantum bits instead of bits as quantum bits store both the values 1 and 0 together in superposition. Abstract The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has made machine learning (ML) methods central to modern science, technology, and industry. At the same time, the emergence of programmable quantum computers, along with the anticipation of large-scale fault-tolerant machines in the future, has generated interest in the potential of quantum machine learning (QML)—a field that explores quantum properties to enhance ML tasks. While QML is often considered a promising application for quantum computing, its practical advantages over classical methods remain an area of active research and exploration. In recent years, QML has garnered significant global attention, with researchers investigating its potential and limitations. In this chapter, we introduce the fundamentals of QML and provide an overview of recent developments and future trends in the field. We outline potential opportunities where quantum properties might offer advantages in ML tasks while also addressing the open challenges that QML faces in terms of scalability, implementation, and practical utility. We also explore the potential applications of QML in defense and security-sensitive domains. Here, researchers speculate that integrating quantum computing into ML could lead to the development of systems capable of resisting sophisticated threats, such as data manipulation and poisoning. However, realizing these possibilities requires further advancements in both quantum hardware and algorithmic design, making QML a promising yet still evolving field.
The basic idea of artificial intelligence and machine learning is that machines have the talent to learn from data, previous experience, and perform the work in future consequences. In the era of the digitalized world which holds big data has long-established machine learning methods consistently with requisite high-quality computational resources in numerous useful and realistic tasks. At the same time, quantum machine learning methods work exponentially faster than their counterparts by making use of quantum mechanics. Through taking advantage of quantum effects such as interference or entanglement, quantum computers can proficiently explain selected issues that are supposed to be tough for traditional machines. Quantum computing is unexpectedly related to that of kernel methods in machine learning. Hence, this chapter provides quantum computation, advance of QML techniques, QML kernel space and optimization, and future work of QML.
The recently emerged field called quantum computing uses the ideas of quantum physics to execute computations substantially faster than they could be done on a conventional computer. This chapter provides a detailed discussion, highlighting its evolution, recent advancements, future opportunities, and challenges for future generations. Rapid advancements have been made in quantum computing, driven by breakthroughs in quantum algorithms, hardware technologies, and theoretical understanding. The essential components that constitute quantum computers, known as qubits, or quantum bits, can exist in superposition and entanglement states, enabling parallel computation and complex information processing. Also, recent advancements in quantum computing have demonstrated the feasibility of quantum algorithms for solving certain problems more efficiently than classical algorithms. Quantum supremacy experiments have showcased the ability of quantum computers to outperform classical systems in specific tasks. Additionally, efforts in developing scalable qubit architectures have advanced the practicality of quantum computers.
Quantum computing and machine learning are probably the most likely to replace classical computers. The power of quantum computers can, for example, change communication can be mentioned, as well as the use of some quantum phenomena as well. This is how, finally, we get the possibility of completely safe communication. Furthermore, quantum computer simulators can be used to enhance knowledge about numerous quantum outcomes, which in return will help engineers develop the technologies of tomorrow, such as power systems, microchips, and modern scientific tools. However, it is worth mentioning that this technology is different from traditional computers in terms of the presence and use of qubits instead of bits. It is precisely due to this leap in computing power that quantum computers can now complete problems in a much shorter time. They do so by looking for the most favorable paths in modeling the orbits. Ironically, their low capabilities are associated with the fact that they were designed to deal with complexity and constraints; they still wouldn’t be preferred for performing rather simple tasks compared to classical computers. The top priority for quantum computers is to perform their functions properly. The real impact of quantum computing is not in the technology itself but in the subsequent applications that come about as a result of it. Therefore, size and quantum error correction, as well as the development of quantum algorithms, will be the dominant constraints in making these methods more widely accessible. Similarly, limitless abilities are simultaneously incorporated with quantum computing; however, effort should be made either in optimization or development if that potential is to become the most powerful.
Quantum computing and quantum machines continue to raise awareness once people realized that “Nature isn’t classical. If you want to make a simulation of nature, you’d better make it quantum mechanical.” ( Feynman, 1982 ). On the other hand, as the Internet brings big data, machine learning has become a logical step for researchers looking for tasks such as the patterns behind the data, or for companies seeking to maximize their data’s potential value. The combination of the quantum computing and machine learning (ML) fields has resulted in quantum machine learning (QML), one of today’s most active fields. This preview provides essential concepts in quantum computation, including the basic quantum physics and fundamentals of quantum computing. The next section examines quantum-enhanced ML models and algorithms. The current state of knowledge of applications is discussed in the following section and the preview concludes with open questions for future research on QML.
