Similarity among quantum-mechanical states: analysis and applications for central potentials

Abstract

Abstract The similarity of quantum-mechanical solutions for central potentials is analytically determined and numerically explored for arbitrary dimensionalities. The study here provided focuses on hydrogenic systems and the harmonic oscillator, in respective non-relativistic frameworks. A diversity of analytical expressions for the quantum similarity measure (QSM) and index (QSI) are provided. Relevant conclusions are derived from the analyses grounded on state quantum numbers, space dimensionality and on the role played by the main characteristic parameters of these systems, namely the nuclear charge in the hydrogenic case, and the angular frequency for the oscillator. For this purpose, a statistical analysis of the QSI values has been performed for a large number both of states and combinations of them in each system. Considering the factorization of QSI into a radial and an angular part, particular attention is paid to the individual contribution of each part in both systems.

Variational Calculation with Harmonic-Oscillator Eigenfunctions

Valdir C. Aguilera-Navarro, Rosa Ma. Méndez V.

Variational calculations play an important role in quantum mechanics, particularly in determining the ground-state energy of physical systems. Didactic examples in which one can see how the exact energy and wave function are approached by using a family of trial functions are not very numerous. An example was given in a recent book [M. Moshinsky, The Harmonic Oscillator in Modern Physics: From Atoms to Quarks (Gordon and Breach, New York, 1969)] which discusses the ground state of the hydrogen atom using as trial wave function a linear combination of harmonic-oscillator states. In the present paper we carry out a similar analysis for the ground state of a particle of mass m in a three-dimensional square-well potential. We discuss not only the approach to the exact energy when we vary the frequency and the number of oscillator states but also analyze the overlap of the exact and variational wave functions and compare the exact and approximate form factors.

High Dimensional Atomic States of Hydrogenic Type: Heisenberg-like and Entropic Uncertainty Measures

J. S. Dehesa

High dimensional atomic states play a relevant role in a broad range of quantum fields, ranging from atomic and molecular physics to quantum technologies. The D-dimensional hydrogenic system (i.e., a negatively-charged particle moving around a positively charged core under a Coulomb-like potential) is the main prototype of the physics of multidimensional quantum systems. In this work, we review the leading terms of the Heisenberg-like (radial expectation values) and entropy-like (Rényi, Shannon) uncertainty measures of this system at the limit of high D. They are given in a simple compact way in terms of the space dimensionality, the Coulomb strength and the state’s hyperquantum numbers. The associated multidimensional position–momentum uncertainty relations are also revised and compared with those of other relevant systems.

Modified Schrodinger Equation With Modified QM Gravitational and Harmonic Oscillator Potentials in Symmetries of Non-commutative QM

Abdelmadjid Maireche

Modified Schrodinger equation plays a fundamental role for describing the behavior of a particle at microscopic scale. In this context, we have studied the non-relativistic energy spectra of the modified quantum mechanical gravitational potential plus the harmonic oscillator (MQMGHO) potential using the generalized Bopp’s shift method and standard perturbation theory within the framework of non-commutative 3-dimensional phase space (NC: 3D-RSP) symmetries. Furthermore, we have shown that the modified Hamiltonian operator containing a perturbed Coulomb potential, which physically means the global Hamiltonian of MQMGHO potential, can be described as Hydrogenic atoms interacting with strong potential composed of quantum mechanical gravitational potential plus the harmonic oscillator (QMGHO) potential and an auxiliary part. The bound state energy eigenvalues, in terms of discreet atomic quantum numbers ( j , n, landm ), four infinitesimal parameters , , ,  induced by positionposition and phase-phase non-commutativity, in addition to the dimensional parameters of MQMGHO potential and the corresponding noncommutative Hamiltonian operator were obtained for Hydrogenic atoms. Moreover, we have shown that, the total complete degeneracy of energy

Multidimensional hydrogenic states: position and momentum expectation values

J S Dehesa, D Puertas-Centeno

Abstract The position and momentum probability densities of a multidimensional quantum system are fully characterized by means of the radial expectation values ⟨ r α ⟩ and p α , respectively. These quantities, which describe and/or are closely related to various fundamental properties of realistic systems, have not been calculated in an analytical and effective manner up until now except for a number of three-dimensional hydrogenic states. In this work we explicitly show these expectation values for all discrete stationary D -dimensional hydrogenic states in terms of the dimensionality D , the strength of the Coulomb potential (i.e. the nuclear charge) and the D state’s hyperquantum numbers. Emphasis is placed on the momentum expectation values (mostly unknown, specially the ones with odd order) which are obtained in a closed compact form. Applications are made to circular, S -wave, high-energy (Rydberg) and high-dimensional (pseudo-classical) states of three- and multidimensional hydrogenic atoms. This has been possible because of the analytical algebraic and asymptotical properties of the special functions (orthogonal polynomials, hyperspherical harmonics) which control the states’ wavefunctions. Finally, some Heisenberg-like uncertainty inequalities satisfied by these dispersion quantities are also given and discussed.

Dynamics of Two-Body Systems

Twisha Choudhary

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the two-body central-interaction problem in quantum mechanics. We investigate the Schrödinger equation for two particles interacting through a central potential, and derive the radial and angular parts of the wave function. The energy eigenvalues and Eigen functions are obtained for various central potentials, including the Coulomb, harmonic oscillator, and square well potentials.

Generalized quantum similarity index: An application to pseudoharmonic oscillator with isospectral potentials in 3D

Piu Ghosh, Debraj Nath

Abstract Exact solutions of a pseudoharmonic oscillator and a family of isospectral potentials are investigated in spherical coordinates. The entropic moment, generalized quantum similarity index, and some quantum information measures are investigated analytically and numerically for two density functions of two quantum systems with same energy and one quantum system with different energies. Analytical results are compared for 19 selected molecules and verified by some physical and artificial values of the spectroscopic parameters.
