Abstract

We study the dynamics of a two-electron atom interacting with a pulsed, elliptically polarized, ultrashort, excited coherent state. We use path integral methods and integrate on the photonic part. We angularly decompose the Coulomb interaction term of the two electrons and the interaction term of the two electrons with the photonic field and solve the sign problem. We give results on the survival probability of the ground state of Helium.

Atoms-Photonic Field Interaction: Influence Functional and Perturbation Theory

Emmanouil George Thrapsaniotis

We study the dynamics of one-electron atoms interacting with a pulsed, elliptically polarized, ultrashort, and coherent state. We use path integral methods. We path integrate the photonic part and extract the corresponding influence functional describing the interaction of the pulse with the atomic electron. Then we angularly decompose it.We keep the first-order angular terms in all but the last factor as otherwise their angular integration would contribute infinites as the number of time slices tends to infinity.Further we use the perturbative expansion of the last factor in powers of the inverse volume and integrate on time. Finally, we obtain a closed angularly decomposed expression of the whole path integral. As an application we develop a scattering theory and study the two-photon ionization of hydrogen.

Path integral approach to the photoionization of one active electron atom by a pulsed Fock state: Fluctuations contribution

Emmanouil George Thrapsaniotis

We model in a fully quantum mechanical way the dynamics of an atom of one optically active electron interacting with a pulsed Fock state which is linearly polarized. We use path integral methods. We derive the system's sign solved propagator which gives full information on its dynamics. We apply our method to the ionization of atomic hydrogen by a one-photon pulsed Fock state and study the contribution of the electromagnetic fluctuations.

Dynamical model of coherent circularly polarized optical pulse interactions with two-level quantum systems

Gabriela M. Slavcheva, Ortwin G. Hess

We propose and develop a method for theoretical description of circularly (elliptically) polarized optical pulse resonant coherent interactions with two-level atoms. The method is based on the time-evolution equations of a two-level quantum system in the presence of a time-dependent dipole perturbation for electric dipole transitions between states with total angular-momentum projection difference $(\ensuremath{\Delta}{J}_{z}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1)$ excited by a circularly polarized electromagnetic field [Feynman et al., J. Appl. Phys. 28, 49 (1957)]. The adopted real-vector representation approach allows for coupling with the vectorial Maxwell's equations for the optical wave propagation and thus the resulting Maxwell pseudospin equations can be numerically solved in the time domain without any approximations. The model permits a more exact study of the ultrafast coherent pulse propagation effects taking into account the vector nature of the electromagnetic field and hence the polarization state of the optical excitation. We demonstrate self-induced transparency effects and formation of polarized solitons. The model represents a qualitative extension of the well-known optical Maxwell-Bloch equations valid for linearly polarized light and a tool for studying coherent quantum control mechanisms.

Emission and electron transitions in an atom interacting with an ultrashort electromagnetic pulse

V. I. Matveev

Electron transitions and emission of an atom interacting with a spatially inhomogeneous ultrashort electromagnetic pulse are considered. The excitation and ionization probabilities are obtained as well as the spectra and cross sections of the reemission of such a pulse by atoms. By way of an example, one-and two-electron inelastic processes accompanying the interaction of ultrashort pulses with hydrogen-and helium-like atoms are considered. The developed technique makes it possible to take into account exactly the spatial non-uniformity of the ultrashort pulse field and photon momenta in the course of reemission.

Emission of an atom during its interaction with an ultrashort pulse of electromagnetic field

The electronic transitions and emission of an atom during its interaction with a spatially inhomogeneous ultrashort pulse of electromagnetic field are considered. The probabilities of excitation and ionization, as well as the spectra and cross sections of reemission of such a pulse by the atom, are obtained. As an example, the one-and two-electron inelastic processes accompanying the interaction of ultrashort pulses with hydrogen-and helium-like atoms are considered.

Hooke's Atom in an Arbitrary External Electric Field: Analytical Solutions of Two-Electron Problem by Path Integral Approach

Liang Cai, Ping Zhang, Tao Yang +1 more

By using the path integral approach, we investigate the problem of Hooke's atom (two electrons interacting with Coulomb potential in an external harmonic-oscillator potential) in an arbitrary time-dependent electric field. For a certain infinite set of discrete oscillator frequencies, we obtain the analytical solutions. The ground state polarization of the atom is then calculated. The same result is also obtained through linear response theory.
