Abstract

We model in a fully quantum mechanical way the dynamics of an atom of one optically active electron interacting with a pulsed Fock state which is linearly polarized. We use path integral methods. We derive the system's sign solved propagator which gives full information on its dynamics. We apply our method to the ionization of atomic hydrogen by a one-photon pulsed Fock state and study the contribution of the electromagnetic fluctuations.

Atoms-Photonic Field Interaction: Influence Functional and Perturbation Theory

Emmanouil George Thrapsaniotis

We study the dynamics of one-electron atoms interacting with a pulsed, elliptically polarized, ultrashort, and coherent state. We use path integral methods. We path integrate the photonic part and extract the corresponding influence functional describing the interaction of the pulse with the atomic electron. Then we angularly decompose it.We keep the first-order angular terms in all but the last factor as otherwise their angular integration would contribute infinites as the number of time slices tends to infinity.Further we use the perturbative expansion of the last factor in powers of the inverse volume and integrate on time. Finally, we obtain a closed angularly decomposed expression of the whole path integral. As an application we develop a scattering theory and study the two-photon ionization of hydrogen.

Path Integral Approach to the Interaction of Two-Electron Atoms with Elliptically Polarized Pulses

Emmanouil George Thrapsaniotis

We study the dynamics of a two-electron atom interacting with a pulsed, elliptically polarized, ultrashort, excited coherent state. We use path integral methods and integrate on the photonic part. We angularly decompose the Coulomb interaction term of the two electrons and the interaction term of the two electrons with the photonic field and solve the sign problem. We give results on the survival probability of the ground state of Helium.

Excitation of two atoms by a propagating single photon pulse

Navneeth Ramakrishnan, Yimin Wang, Valerio Scarani

We describe the interaction of two two-level atoms in free space with propagating modes of the quantized electromagnetic field, using the time-dependent Heisenberg-Langevin method. For single- photon pulses, we consider the effect of the pulse's spatial and temporal profiles on the atomic excitation. In particular, we find the ideal shape for a pulse to put exactly one excitation in any desired state of the bi-atomic system. Furthermore, we analyze the differences in the atomic dynamics between the cases of Fock state pulses and coherent state pulses.

Fully Microscopic Studies of Strong-Field Atom Ionization

K. Schuh, J. Hader, Jerome V. Moloney +1 more

This talk summarizes the results of our microscopic approach to study short-pulse ionization in a many atom system. The interaction of a highly off-resonant light pulse with an atomic gas is modeled fully microscopically. The theory systematically includes the light-atom interaction, as well as the electron-electron and electron-ion interaction effects on the distributions and the optically induced coherent polarization. The resulting equations are solved numerically for an atomic model system excited by a strong light pulse.

Dynamic effects of electromagnetic wave on a damped two-level atom: Exact solution via path integral

Mekki Aouachria, Farida Halimi

The spin coherent state path integral describing the dynamics of a two-level system interacting with electromagnetic wave of circular polarization is considered. The propagator is first written in the standard form by replacing the spin by a unit vector aligned along the polar and azimuthal directions. Then it is determined exactly using perturbation methods. Thus, the exact energy spectra with corresponding wave functions are deduced.

Single-photon double ionization of an atom in a strong radiation field

Elena A. Volkova, A. M. Popov, Olga V. Tikhonova

Double ionization is studied by direct numerical integration of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a model two-electron system in the field of an electromagnetic wave in the case when the photon energy exceeds the energy required for the removal of both electrons of the atom. The probabilities of single-electron and double ionization are obtained as functions of the radiation intensity. The energy spectra and double pulse distributions of photoelectrons are analyzed. It is shown that single-photon ionization plays a significant role only in the limiting cases of weak and strong fields. The obtained results are used in an analysis of the contributions from different channels to the double-ionization process (in particular, for clarifying the role of the electron-electron interaction). The results of numerical calculations are compared with the analytic model of the phenomenon.
