Abstract

It has been shown analytically and numerically that the effect of magnetic coherence (interference) of levels in L- and V-type transitions, induced by the field of a traveling linearly polarized electromagnetic (EM) wave of arbitrary intensity, can make a significant contribution both to the populations of transition levels (more ~50% than of the field contribution) and to the absorption resonance spectra during frequency and magnetic scanning. Differences in the manifestation of the magnetic coherence effect in level populations for open and closed types of transitions have been identified. It has been established that narrow coherent electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances are formed in the absorption resonance spectra during magnetic scanning near zero magnetic field. The dependencies of EIT resonance parameters on the characteristics of atomic transitions and EM wave intensity have been investigated. The contribution of the magnetic coherence effect of transition levels to the shape of these resonances has been revealed.

Resonances of electromagnetic-induced transparency and electromagnetic-induced absorption at the transition with level momenta J=1/2 in unidirectional wave spectroscopy

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко

Abstract The physical processes that form the saturated absorption resonance spectra on the atomic transition with level momenta J= 1/2 in the field of unidirectional waves of arbitrary intensities are investigated both analytically and numerically. It is shown that the narrow structures of the nonlinear resonance spectra (resonances of electromagnetic-induced transparency and absorption) and the processes forming them are determined by the direction of the light wave polarizations, degree of openness of the atomic transition, and the saturating wave intensity. The conditions under which the nonlinear resonance is exclusively coherent, due to the magnetic coherence of transition levels, are revealed.

Polarization Phenomena in Transparency and Absorption Effects Induced by the Field of Unidirectional Waves

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко

Physical processes that form the spectra of saturated absorption and magnetic scanning resonances on an atomic transition with level momentum J = 1 in the field of unidirectional waves of arbitrary intensity under variation in their polarization directions are investigated by numerical simulation and analytically. It is shown that anomalies in nonlinear resonance spectra are determined by the polarization of the waves and the degree of openness of the atomic transition, while anomalies in the experimentally observed magnetic scanning spectra are attributed to the magnetic coherence induced by the fields directly on the levels of the lower state, rather than to its transfer from the excited states, as was assumed earlier.

Magnetic coherence effects in the spectroscopy of transitions between energy levels with total angular momenta J = 1/2 and J = 1 using unidirectional waves

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко

Abstract The physical processes that form the spectra of saturated absorption resonances at atomic transitions between energy levels with angular momenta J = 1/2 and J = 1 in the field of two unidirectional linearly polarised laser waves are studied analytically and numerically. It is shown that the specific features of the resonance spectra are formed in the Λ-schemes of transitions and manifest themselves in the form of narrow coherent structures – dips due to the magnetic coherence (optical orientation) of the transition levels induced by the optical fields. In this case, the energy levels of the lower state make the main contribution, and the contribution of the transfer of magnetic coherence from the sublevels of the upper state to the lower ones in the resonance amplitude manifests itself as an additive. Conditions are found under which the nonlinear resonance is exclusively coherent. The effect of the saturating wave field on the shape of coherent resonance structures is studied.

Polarization phenomena in the transparency and adsorption effects induced by the field of counterpropagating waves

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко, Anatolii M. Shalagin

The physical processes that form the resonances of saturated absorption and magnetic scanning in the field of counterpropagating waves of an arbitrary intensity when their polarizations change are numerically simulated. The atomic transition with level moment J = 1 is used as an example to show that the anomalies in the experimental saturated absorption spectra are determined by the degree of opening of the atomic transition. In the case of magnetic scanning, the anomalies are caused by the magnetic coherence induced by the wave fields at the levels of the lower state rather than by its transfer from the excited states, as was proposed earlier.

Resonance shapes of the saturated absorption and magnetic scanning on transition with J = 1 - J = 2 in a spectroscopy of unidirectional waves

Э. Г. Сапрыкин, А. А. Черненко

Physical processes forming resonance spectra of the saturated absorption and magnetic scanning on transition with level moments J = 1-J = 2 in the field of unidirectional waves of arbitrary intensities are numerically studied. It is shown that the anomalies of nonlinear resonance spectra are determined by the character of wave polarizations and by the degree of openness of atomic transition, and the anomalies of the magnetic scanning spectra are due to the magnetic coherence of the lower state levels, and not to its transfer from the excited states, as previously thought.

Electromagnetically induced transparency with magnetically induced Δ F = 0 , m F = 0 → m F = 0 probe transition

Armen D. Sargsyan, David G. Sarkisyan, A. Papoyan

Abstract Interest in magnetically induced (MI) transitions of alkali metal atoms is caused by the fact that their intensities can exceed the intensities of ‘regular’ atomic transitions in a wide magnetic field range (200–4000 G). The goal of this work was to form and study, for the first time, electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance in a strong magnetic field using probe radiation tuned to | F g = F , m F = 0 ⟩ → | F e = F , m F = 0 ⟩ MI transition, which is forbidden in zero magnetic fields. Two narrow-band linearly polarized cw diode lasers were used to form EIT resonance on a Λ-type system of a Cs atomic D 2 line in a strong transverse magnetic field (up to 1000 G). The resonance was formed in a Cs atomic vapor nanocell with an atomic vapor column thickness of 850 nm.
