Abstract

We present an alternative route to realize coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and subnatural narrowing by vacuum-induced coupling (VIC) between excited levels of an atomic ensemble in an optical nanofiber (ONF) cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) system. By employing the VIC arising from quantum interference between the spontaneous emission pathways from the upper excited doublet to one common ground state in the three-level $V$-type atoms, a very narrow absorption resonance can be observed in the generated dark-state spectral window owing to quantum destructive interference between the spontaneous emission pathways. The spectroscopic output feature exhibits a reduced linewidth, which is much narrower than both the empty-cavity linewidth and the atomic transition linewidth. As a check, the approximate analytical results for the ONF cavity-output power and linewidth of interest agree well with the numerical simulations. Furthermore, we find that the CPA can be used to probe the existence of the VIC effect. By tuning the relative phase between the two input light fields appropriately, the conversion between the CPA and coherent perfect transmission (CPT) can be realized in both the linear and nonlinear excitation regimes, i.e., the relative phase can switch the ONF CQED system from a perfect photon absorber to a nearly perfect photon transmitter. Also, we analyze the optical bistability of the ONF CQED system and its phase dependence in the nonlinear excitation regime. Such interference control of the CPA-to-CPT (or vice versa) scheme proposed here may have potential applications in optical logical devices for optical computing and quantum information processing.

Vacuum-induced quantum-beat-enabled photon antibunching

Zhiming Wu, Jiahua Li, Ying Wu

Vacuum-induced coupling (VIC), arising from the quantum interference between the spontaneous emission pathways from the excited doublet to a common ground state, has attracted significant research interest and has been observed in recent experiments. Here, we present an alternative route to probe the existence of VIC by means of the coherence statistics of photon antibunching and show that, under realistic experimental conditions, the vacuum-induced quantum beat (VIQB) can enable strong photon antibunching with high brightness in an optical nanofiber (ONF) cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) system. We find that the occurrence of the photon antibunching corresponds to the existence of the VIC, indicating that the photon antibunching can be an important witness for VIC. In addition, a strong photon antibunching effect appears in the weak-coupling regime of light-atom interactions when the VIQB is present, as a result of the destructive quantum interference between the different paths for two-photon excitation. Furthermore, we find that strong photon antibunching can be generated within a certain driving frequency range in the present system, which can relax the requirement for the driving frequency in the ONF CQED system. Also, we compare the analytical and numerical results of the second-order intensity correlation function, and they are in good agreement. The present study builds a bridge between the photon antibunching and the VIC and VIQB, which is useful for well understanding and researching a tunable single-photon source, as well as enabling potential applications in quantum information processing and quantum communications.

Phase-engineered photon correlations in weakly coupled nanofiber cavity QED

Zhiming Wu, Jiahua Li, Ying Wu

A recent experiment [H. S. Han et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 073604 (2021); see also accompanying online supplemental material] shows that when a three-level $V$-type atom with two closely lying upper states interacts with the same vacuum radiation field, its excited states enable vacuum-induced coupling (VIC) owing to the quantum interference between the spontaneous emission pathways. Here, we propose a feasible scheme for phase-engineered photon correlations in the presence of the VIC in an optical nanofiber (ONF) cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system. Specifically, we show that a phase-dependent strong photon antibunching with high brightness can be generated in the weak-coupling regime of light-atom interactions. This occurs because of the VIC, leading to both the destructive quantum interference between the different pathways for two-photon excitation and the total closed-loop coupling phase. Different types of purely quantum correlations, such as single- and two-photon blockades, can occur by properly tuning the total closed-loop coupling phase adhering on the VIC, and the switch from photon blockade to photon induced tunneling is revealed as well. On the other hand, the strong photon antibunching can be achieved in a broad driving frequency range, which relaxes the requirement for the driving frequency in the ONF cavity QED system. In addition, we compare the analytical and numerical results of the second- and third-order intensity correlation functions, and they are in good agreement. The present study may provide an alternative route to manipulate the few-photon states and have potential applications in single-photon sources and quantum communications.

Tunable nonlinear coherent perfect absorption in cavity QED

Miaodi Guo, Haifeng Li, Ning Li +1 more

We propose and analyze a scheme for tunable coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and near-perfect reflection (near CPR) in a three-level $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$-type atom-cavity system. With electromagnetically-induced-transparency-type interference induced by a coherent coupling laser, it provides a method of tunable near CPR at two-photon resonance. By virtue of different coupling strengths, CPA can be tuned from the linear regime to the nonlinear or bistable regime at a fixed input-field frequency. In addition, the CPA regime can be switched to the near-CPR regime with variable linear absorption or gain by an incoherent pump field. This work suggests a mechanism for manipulation on perfect absorption and reflection theoretically which can potentially be applied to logical gates and optical switches for coherent optical computing and communication.

Magnetic-field-engineered coherent perfect absorption and transmission

Zhiming Wu, Jiahua Li, Ying Wu

An experimental work [W. J. Wan, Y. D. Chong, L. Ge, H. Noh, A. D. Stone, and H. Cao, Science 331, 889 (2011)] showed that a resonator that contains a loss medium instead of a gain medium enables coherent perfect absorption (CPA) by interference. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize such a CPA and coherent perfect transmission (CPT) as well as the switching between CPA and CPT in a cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) system by applying an external magnetic field. The proposed CPA and CPT scheme is based on the magnetically induced transparency (MIT) configuration, instead of the conventional electromagnetically induced transparency configuration, which offers a sensitive method to tune CPA and CPT and also is conducive to the flexible control of the CPA and CPT scheme. Under the linear and nonlinear excitation regimes, we derive the approximate analytical solutions of the cavity-output power and the CPA criteria of the CQED system, and find that the CPA can occur at different frequencies in both regimes. In the nonlinear excitation regime, the relationship between the cavity-output power and the cavity-input power can show a bistable characteristic by the control of the static magnetic field, and the CPA point is near the turning point of the cavity-input power on the bistable return hysteresis curve. Furthermore, the line shape and the threshold value for optical bistability can be flexibly controlled by varying the magnetic field under experimentally accessible conditions, thus the magnetic field can well tune the CPA. Also, we compare the analytical and numerical results of the cavity-output power in the nonlinear excitation regime, and they are in good agreement. Our results show that the CQED system based on the MIT configuration can be used as a perfect absorber or nearly perfect transmitter, which may have practical applications in optical logic and optical communication devices.

Broadband coherent perfect absorption by cavity coupled to three-level atoms in linear and nonlinear regimes

Liyong Wang, Jiangong Hu, Jiajia Du +1 more

Abstract A broadband coherent perfect absorption (CPA) scheme consisting of an optical resonator coupled with three-level atoms excited by single cavity mode is proposed and analyzed. We show the output light field from the system is completely suppressed under specific conditions when the system is excited in linear and nonlinear regimes by two identical light fields from two ends of optical cavity. An analytical broadband CPA criterion for central and sideband excitations of cavity quantum electrodynamics system is derived in linear regime. Moreover, we show the resonant excitation criterion for CPA is greatly extended in nonlinear regime. A new type of bistability behavior is found. The output field intensity and the bistability curve can be well tuned by dynamically adjusting system parameters. Our results demonstrate that the CPA is quite universal, and it should be useful in a variety of applications in optical logic and optical communication devices.

High-efficiency all-optical switching based on broadband coherent perfect absorption in an atom-cavity system

Liyong Wang, Yinxue Zhao, Ke Di +1 more

We propose an ultrahigh-efficiency and broadband all-optical switching scheme based on coherent perfect absorption (CPA) in linear and nonlinear excitation regimes in a cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) system. Two separate atomic transitions are excited simultaneously by two signal fields coupled from two ends of an optical cavity under the collective strong coupling condition. Three polariton eigenstates are produced which can be tuned freely by varying system parameters. The output field intensities of multiple channels are zero when the CPA criterion is satisfied. However, destructive quantum interference can be induced by a free-space weak control laser when it is tuned to be resonant to the polariton state. As a consequence, the CQED system acts as a coherent perfect light absorber/transmitter as the control field is turned on/off the polariton resonances. In particular, the proposed scheme may be used to realize broadband multi-throw all-optical switching in the nonlinear excitation regime. The proposed scheme is useful for constructing all-optical routing, all-optical communication networks and various all-optical logic elements.
