Abstract

The two—component superradiative medium consists of two species of atoms with the different dipole moments of the quasi-resonant transitions. The atoms with the smaller dipole moment are initially in the excited state, while е atoms of the second type are initially in the ground state. In the initial stage of the superradiance dynamics the first component is amplifying one, the second component is resonantly absorbing. By varying the concentration of the resonantly absorbing atoms it is possible to increase the intensity of superradiance in the few order of magnitude with respect to the monocomponent medium of the amplifying atoms alone. Here we show that the variation in the distribution of the component densities enables us the additional possibilities in the control of the superradiance pulse parameters. The additional increase in the order of magnitude for the peak pulse intensity is obtained at the optimal distribution. The nature of such variation in the pulse profile and its intensity is due to the opportunity for the effective spatial mode selection in the spatial inhomogeneous media. We discuss the algorithms of е numerical solution and show that the enhanced accuracy methods can be developed in this case.

Superradiance of two-component media

A V Andreev, P V Polevoy

The superradiance (SR) phenomenon is considered for the case of a medium consisting of two resonant components. It is shown that the dynamics of emission in this case differs essentially from that for a monocomponent medium. The use of a two-component medium results in a substantial weakness in the requirements for duration of the pumping pulse. The peak pulse intensity of superradiance for the case of a two-component medium can exceed that for each of the components separately. By varying the active medium length and concentration of components we can control the spatiotemporal dynamics of emission. This enables us to transform the broadened pumping pulse of a lower intensity into the ultrashort high intensity pulse of SR.

Generation of ultrashort pulses by two-component superradiance media

Anatolii V Andreev, P. V. Polevoy

A method is proposed for substantially reducing the length of superradiance pulses and increasing their intensity. The idea is to introduce an additional coherent resonant component, with a higher Rabi frequency, in a superradiance medium. The superradiance intensity of a two-component medium of this sort can be substantially higher than that of either component individually. The pump pulse can be several orders of magnitude longer than the generation pulse. The parameters of the generation pulse are controlled by varying the length and composition of the active medium.

Ultrashort Pulses in Multicomponent Media and Photonic Bandgap Structures

Anatoli V. Andreev

Abstract : The mathematical algorithms and programs for the study of the resonant light-matter interactions in the multi-component and multilevel media and photonic bandgap structures have been developed. The optimal component distribution in the two-component media have been found to get a pulse of a superradiative emission of the highest intensity. The mathematical algorithms and programs for the study of the femtosecond pulse propagation in an extended medium of the two-level atoms have developed. The regime of the inversionless superradiance in the two-component superradiative medium has been investigated. The theory of the superradiance by an ensemble of the two-level atoms embedded in the dielectric host was developed. It was shown that the near dipole-dipole interaction of dense collection of two-level atoms is enhanced by the presence of the host material, decreasing the pulse temporal width and increasing the peak pulse intensity of superradiative emission. The theory of nonlinear light-matter interaction in multidimensional resonant photonic crystals under Bragg diffraction condition has been developed. It was obtained the analytical and numerical solutions describing the novel kinds of nonlinear solitary waves: the Laue soliton, O-field, propagating and standing gap solitary waves. It has been described the spatio-temporal nonlinear dynamics of coherent field in periodic resonant structures with arbitrary modulation of atomic density and gain gratings.

Superradiance of two-component composite media

Anatolii V Andreev, P. V. Polevoy

An investigation is reported of the superradiance of a system composed of two superradiant media. It is shown that the intensity of the superradiance pulses can be increased. A description is given of a system in which identical media are used as both fast and slow components of a two-component composite medium. New opportunities for control of the superradiance pulse parameters are discussed.

Coherent pulse amplification in two-component media

Anatolii V Andreev, P. V. Polevoy

The dynamics of pulse amplification in a medium containing two atomic components (one absorbing, one amplifying) is investigated in the regime in which the pulse interacts coherently with both components. It is shown that a pulse in this two-component medium may be amplified, absorbed, or broken up into a series of pulses, depending on the density of the absorbing species and the initial area of the pulse. Threshold values are determined for the impurity density and the area of the incident pulse. The possibility of pulse shortening during amplification is demonstrated.

Superradiance enhancement by bad-cavity resonator

Abstract In this work we consider the dynamics of an ensemble of two-level atoms that interact with finite-width resonator mode. The superradiant burst occurs under a wide range of parameters in such a system. However, if the initial phase distribution of dipole moments of N two-level atoms is random, not all atoms take part in the superradiant process, but only the part of them that results in the intensity of supperradiance I ∼ N α , where α < 2 . In this paper we investigate the dependence of the parameter α on the resonator mode decay rate. It is shown that there is a critical value of resonator mode decay rate that divides two different regimes of superradiance. If the decay rate is lower than the critical rate, superradiance demonstrates a multi-peak character and the number of dipoles forming superradiant burst increases while α grows from 1 to 2. When the decay rate is larger than the critical value there is a single-peak superradiant regime. The delay time dependence on N changes from power to logarithmic law at the critical decay rate. The existence of the optimal value of resonator decay rate can be used for superradiance enhancement by a resonator with finite losses.
