Decoherence-induced formation of sub-poissonian entangled and steerable states of collective fields

Abstract

Abstract The decoherence process has a tendency to yield the evolution of a pure state into a mixed one and to cause the quantum-to-classical transition by the coupling of a system of interest to the reservoir with infinitely many degrees of freedom. This is the major obstacle to the implementation of quantum computation and hence the realization of quantum computers. We propose a scheme to create unconditionally sub-Poissonian entangled and steerable states of the collective cavity field modes by use of the dissipation process. Based on the suitable choice of combination modes, the scheme uses the inherent, efficient and controllable two-mode squeezed vacuum reservoir coupled to the combination modes of concern rather than the original cavity modes in the two-level quantum beat laser. The decoherence is shown to pull the collective modes into the sub-Poissonian entangled and steerable states in the stationary regime, while the job of the dissipation of the individual cavity fields is to give rise to the degradation of the bipartite entanglement of the two individual modes and to inhibit the occurrence of the quantum steering from one cavity mode to the other. In particular for the case that the external driving field is close to the exact resonance with the atom, the collective fields are eventually prepared asymptotically in the stationary Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen state, while the two individual cavity modes are pulled into the vacuum states and reach steady state. The disappearance of the decoherence disables the nonclassical states of the collective modes, while the ignorance of the dissipation process of the cavity field modes guarantees the generation of the entanglement between the pair of individual modes. The decoherence-induced formation of a nonclassical source is ascribed to the four-wave mixing process together with the intrinsic amplitude and phase locking.

Decoherence-enabled unconditional strongly sub-Poissonian squeezing

Qing Yang Xu, Ke Zhang, Xiaobo Shen +2 more

It is generally accepted that the role of quantum decoherence is to spoil the quantum superpositions and to yield the emergence of the classical behaviors from quantum mechanics. Contrary to the common knowledge of decoherence, we propose a scheme to generate a steady-state bright source of strongly sub-Poissonian squeezed light using the environmentally induced decoherence. The disappearance of the process of decoherence disables the generation of the squeezed state of the combination modes, while the presence of the decoherence results in the strongly nonclassical light source at the sub-shot-noise level and even near-perfect sub-Poissonian squeezed state of light. This excludes the use of the paradigm that the good insulation of a quantum system from its surrounding environment is highly desirable to explore its quantum property and fuel the growth of quantum information science. The interactions with the atom make no contribution to the preparation of squeezed light. These counterintuitive results are originated from the intrinsic quantum reservoir in the dressed-atom combination mode picture, which may open the door to exploring high levels of squeezing induced by the decoherence in the stationary regime.

Quantum correlations in four-wave mixing and quantum- beat lasers

Xiangming Hu, Guangling Cheng, Jinhua Zou +1 more

We present a collection of our recent schemes that have been proposed for continuous variable entanglement. Included in this collection are two types of optical systems. One is the four-wave mixing in resonantly or near-resonantly driven atomic systems. The numerical results and physical analyses are presented by using dressed atomic states and squeeze transformed cavity modes. Two dissipation channels are identified, through which the dressed atoms simultaneously absorb in the excitations from the pair of squeeze transformed modes. It is in the presence of such two channels that the entanglement is greatly enhanced and the best achievable state is the original Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entangled state. This scheme is applicable in the optical regime where atomic spontaneous emission has to be taken into account, unlike the two-step atomic reservoir engineering scheme, which is limited to the microwave regime. The other kind of systems is the quantum-beat laser with incoherent pump or coherent driving. Such a laser, when it operates well above threshold, produces entangled light. The numerical results and physical analyses are presented by using the collective modes of the lasing fields. The relative mode is decoupled from the active medium and thus remains in its vacuum state, while the sum mode operates well above threshold and displays sub-shot noise. The quantum-beat and the sum mode intensity noise reduction combine to yield entanglement between two bright beams and sub-Poissonian photon statistics of respective beams.

One-way steering of optical fields via dissipation of an atomic reservoir

Shi Rao, Xiangming Hu, Lingchao Li +1 more

Abstract Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) steering as a form of quantum correlation lies between entanglement and Bell nonlocality and exhibits an inherent asymmetry between two observers. We study EPR steering of two fields, which are generated via four-wave mixing processes and are entangled with each other due to the dissipation of the atomic reservoir. It is shown that the one-way steering happens from one mode to the other for different cavity decay rates and not too small cooperation parameters. Depending on the adiabatic and nonadiabatic conditions, the one-way steering occurs in a different detuning region when the cooperation parameters are relatively small. An increase in the cooperation parameters leads to an increase both in the parameter region and in the degree for the one-way steering. Finally we generalize the present scheme to the cases of the bright and/or collective fields.

Entanglement between collective fields via atomic coherence effects

Xiu Zhang, Xiangming Hu

We explore the quantum entanglement between two collective fields via atomic coherence effects. For three-level atoms in $\mathsf{V}$ configuration driven by two applied fields on two-photon resonance, one coherent superposition of the excited states is not excited, which is the counterpart of coherent population trapping. The coherence-induced depopulation makes two cavity fields in each collection combine into a quantum-beat, i.e., equivalently, the difference mode of the two components decouples from the driven atoms. The two sum modes, when they are arranged in the four-wave mixinglike interactions, can be prepared in Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entangled state. Correspondingly, any two individual fields from different collective modes are entangled with each other. Furthermore, the effects of thermal reservoir and laser linewidths are discussed, and a generalization is given to the case in which each quantum beat involves more than two modes.

Tripartite entanglement in quantum-beat lasers

Xiaoxia Li, Xiangming Hu

We examine the quantum correlations at steady state in a three-mode quantum-beat laser that operates well above threshold. The analysis is presented by employing the dressed-atom combination-mode picture, in which only one combination mode of three cavity fields is coupled to the active medium, while the other two combination modes are decoupled. For suitable operating conditions, the coupled mode has the intensity fluctuations below the shot noise, while the two decoupled modes retain in their vacuum states. This determines that all of the original modes exhibit sub-Poissonian statistics. When the system operates well above threshold, the van Loock-Furusawa inequality is satisfied, concluding that the genuine tripartite entanglement among three sub-Poissonian fields is established. Physically, the responsible mechanism is the combined effect of atomic coherence controlled correlated-spontaneous emission and intrinsic feedback.

Controlling stationary one-way steering in a three-level atomic ensemble

Jie 洁 Peng 彭, Jun Xu, Hua-Zhong 华忠 Liu 刘 +1 more

We propose a scheme for establishing the stationary one-way quantum steering in a three-level Λ-type atomic ensemble. In our system, the cavity modes are generated from two atomic dipole-allowed transitions, which are in turn driven by two external classical fields. The atomic ensemble can act as an engineered reservoir to put two cavity modes into a squeezed state by two Bogoliubov dissipation pathways. When the damping rates of the two cavity modes are different, the steady-state one-way quantum steering of the intracavity and output fields is presented by adjusting the normalized detuning. The physical mechanism is analyzed based on a dressed state representation and Bogoliubov mode transformation. The achieved optical one-way quantum steering scheme has potential applications in quantum secret information sharing protocols.
