Abstract

We demonstrate a high-dimensional mode-sorter for single photons based on a multi-output quantum pulse gate, which can programmatically switch encoding between temporal modes, frequency bins and time bins, reaching a fidelity of 0.967 ± 0.031 at the single-photon level.

Programmable time-frequency mode-sorting of single photons with a multi-output quantum pulse gate

Laura Serino, Christof Eigner, Benjamin Brecht +1 more

We demonstrate a high-dimensional mode-sorter for single photons based on a multi-output quantum pulse gate, which we can program to switch between different temporal-mode encodings including pulse modes, frequency bins, time bins, and their superpositions. This device can facilitate practical realizations of quantum information applications such as high-dimensional quantum key distribution and thus enables secure communication with enhanced information capacity. We characterize the mode-sorter through a detector tomography in 3 and 5 dimensions and find a fidelity up to 0.958 ± 0.030 at the single-photon level.

Realization of a Multi-Output Quantum Pulse Gate for Decoding High-Dimensional Temporal Modes of Single-Photon States

Laura Serino, Jano Gil-López, Michael Stefszky +4 more

Temporal modes (TMs) of photons provide an appealing high-dimensional encoding basis for quantum information. While techniques to generate TM states have been established, high-dimensional decoding of single-photon TMs remains an open challenge. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate demultiplexing of five-dimensional TMs of single photons with an average fidelity of 0.96 ± 0.01, characterized via measurement tomography. This is achieved with use of a newly developed device, the multi-output quantum pulse gate (MQPG).We demonstrate a proof-of-principle complete decoder based on the MQPG that operates on any basis from a set of six five-dimensional mutually unbiased bases and is therefore suitable as a receiver for high-dimensional quantum key distribution.Furthermore, we confirm the highquality operation of the MQPG by performing resource-efficient state tomography with an average fidelity of 0.98 ± 0.02.

A Programmable Spatiotemporal Quantum Parametric Mode Sorter

Malvika Garikapati, Santosh Kumar, He Zhang +2 more

We experimentally demonstrate a programmable parametric mode sorter of high-dimensional signals in a composite spatiotemporal Hilbert space through mode-selective quantum frequency up-conversion. As a concrete example and with quantum communication applications in mind, we consider the Laguerre-Gaussian and Hermite-Gaussian modes as the spatial and temporal state basis for the signals, respectively. By modulating the spatiotemporal profiles of the up-conversion pump, we demonstrate the faithful selection of single photons in those modes and their superposition modes. Our results show an improvement in the quantum mode-sorting performance by coupling the up-converted light into a single-mode fiber and/or operating the upconversion at the edge of phase matching. By optimizing pump temporal profiles only, we achieve more than 12 dB extinction for mutually unbiased basis (MUB) sets of the spatiotemporal modes. This fully programmable and efficient system could serve as a viable resource for quantum communications, quantum computation, and quantum metrology.

Temporal-mode tomography of single photons

Vahid Ansari, Markus Allgaier, Linda Sansoni +5 more

Accessing a high dimensional Hilbert space spanned by temporal modes (TMs) of single-photons is an intriguing idea for quantum information protocols, though it is experimentally challenging. The quantum pulse gate (QPG), a group-velocity matched sum-frequency process, can perform arbitrary TM resolved measurement. We present a thorough characterisation of measurement operators of a QPG and we show that this device is capable of performing full state tomography with 99% fidelity. Moreover, we use this device for TM tomography of pure and mixed heralded single-photon states in 7-dimensional Hilbert space.
