Abstract

We develop a framework describing quantum noise propagation in highly spatially multimode nonlinear optical systems. We predict quantum deviations of the spatial intensity noise distribution from the spatial power distribution, and observe this effect experimentally.

Understanding and controlling spatially multimode noise

Michael Horodynski

We develop a theoretical framework for predicting spatial noise dynamics in multimode nonlinear photonics, which we experimentally demonstrate in multimode fibers. This insight enables us to show that by suitably engineering the optical field sent into the multimode fiber with a spatial light modulator, we can strongly control and reduce the quantum noise at the output facet of the fiber.

Quantum Picture of Nonlinear Optical Patterns

A. Gatti, L. A. Lugiato, Irene Marzoli +3 more

The recent investigations on quantum effects in nonlinear optical patterns and spatial aspect of squeezing have focused on the concept of quantum image [1,2,3]. These are very noisy images images, dominated by quantum fluctuations and can be revealed either 1) by high frequency observation, which is able to reveal the fast dynamics of fluctuations, or 2) by low frequency observation, by measuring the spatial correlation function. This displays a regular modulation, which anticipates the stripe pattern that appear above threshold [4], while the intensity distribution is uniform on average.

Controlling the quantum noise of intense light

Nicholas Rivera

In reality, a wide variety of laser sources have fluctuations in excess (and often far in excess) of the coherent state, even when technical noise sources are suppressed. I present recent advances that challenge this paradigm, and show how multimode nonlinearities can be steered towards reducing the noise of intense beams of light down to quantum limits associated with coherent states and squeezed states of light. I will show how multimode correlations and wavefront shaping can suppress excess noise by orders of magnitude: reaching, and even surpassing, the shot-noise limit. We demonstrate these effects for femtosecond pulses propagating in both single-mode fibers and in multi-mode fibers. Our ability to control noise is aided by a general theory framework that we have developed, called quantum sensitivity analysis, which lets us predict how quantum noise is transformed by nonlinear and multimode systems.

Microscopic model for a spatial multimode generation based on Multi-pump Four Wave Mixing in hot vapours

H. M. Florez

Multipartite entanglement is an important resource for quantum information processing. It has been shown that it is possible to employ alkali atoms to implement single device multipartite entanglement by using nonlinear processes with spatial modes. This work presents the first microscopic description of such multi-mode generation with two-pump four wave mixing (4WM) in dense atomic media. We implement an extension of a double $Λ$ model for a single pump 4WM in order to describe the multi-mode generation with a two-pump configuration. We propose a Floquet expansion to solve the multimode gain amplification and noise properties. The model describes the angle and the two-photon dependency of the multimode generation and the quantum correlations among the modes. We investigate the entanglement properties of the system, describing the main properties of previous experimental observations. Such a microscopic description can be used to predict the gain distribution of modes and the quantum correlation within a typical range of experimental parameters.

We present a new fluctuation-dissipation relation that shows how quantum noise transforms under engineered nonlinear dissipation found in many important nonlinear optical devices and validate the theory with experiments on nonlinear interferometers.
