Abstract

Non-binary polar codes (NBPCs) decoded by successive cancellation (SC) algorithm have remarkable bit-error-rate performance compared to the binary polar codes (BPCs). Due to its serial nature, SC decoding suffers from long latency. The latency issue in BPCs has been the topic of extensive research and it has been notably resolved by the introduction of fast SC-based decoders. However, the latency problem of NBPCs is mainly untouched and the vast majority of research on NBPCs is devoted to issues concerning design and efficient implementation. In this paper, we propose fast SC decoding for NBPCs constructed based on$2\times 2$kernels. In particular, we extend the special nodes of BPCs to their non-binary counterpart and define various non-binary special nodes in the SC decoding tree of NBPCs and propose their fast decoding. This way, we avoid traversing the full decoding tree and significantly reduce the decoding delay compared to symbol-by-symbol SC decoding. We also propose a simplified NBPC structure that facilitates the procedure of non-binary fast SC decoding. Using our proposed fast non-binary decoder, we observe an improvement of more than 96% in latency concerning the original SC decoding. This is while our proposed fast SC decoder for NBPCs incurs no error-rate loss.

Fast Successive-Cancellation-Based Decoders of Polar Codes

Maryam Haghighi Ardakani, Muhammad Hanif, Masoud Ardakani +1 more

The successive-cancellation list (SCL) and successive-cancellation flip (SCF) decoding can be used to improve the performance of polar codes, especially for short to moderate length codes. However, their serial decoding nature results in significant decoding latencies. Implementing some operations in parallel can reduce their decoding latencies. This paper presents fast implementations of the SCL and SCF decoders. In particular, we propose fast parallel list decoders for five newly identified types of nodes in the decoding tree of a polar code, which significantly improves the decoding latency. We also present novel fast SCF decoders that decode some special nodes in the decoding tree of a polar code without serially computing bit log-likelihood ratios. Using our proposed fast parallel SCF decoders, we observed an improvement up to 81% with respect to the original SCF decoder. This significant reduction in the decoding latency is observed without sacrificing the bit-error-rate performance of the code.

On the Successive Cancellation Decoding of Polar Codes with Arbitrary Linear Binary Kernels

Zhiliang Huang, Zhang, Shiyi, Zhang, Feiyan +2 more

A method for efficiently successive cancellation (SC) decoding of polar codes with high-dimensional linear binary kernels (HDLBK) is presented and analyzed. We devise a $l$-expressions method which can obtain simplified recursive formulas of SC decoder in likelihood ratio form for arbitrary linear binary kernels to reduce the complexity of corresponding SC decoder. By considering the bit-channel transition probabilities $W_{G}^{(\cdot)}(\cdot|0)$ and $W_{G}^{(\cdot)}(\cdot|1)$ separately, a $W$-expressions method is proposed to further reduce the complexity of HDLBK based SC decoder. For a $m\times m$ binary kernel, the complexity of straightforward SC decoder is $O(2^{m}N\log N)$. With $W$-expressions, we reduce the complexity of straightforward SC decoder to $O(m^{2}N\log N)$ when $m\leq 16$. Simulation results show that $16\times16$ kernel polar codes offer significant advantages in terms of error performances compared with $2\times2$ kernel polar codes under SC and list SC decoders.

Generalized Constituent Nodes for Simplified Successive-Cancellation Decoding of Multi-Kernel Polar Codes

Yanlong Zhao, Zhendong Yin, Zhutian Yang +1 more

The decoding latency of the successive-cancellation decoder for polar codes is of great importance in its practical applications, and it can be reduced by implementing multi-bit decision decoders in the constituent nodes of the decoding tree. In this letter, we develop a matrix analysis method to analyze the corresponding parity submatrix of the decoding tree’s internal node. Two generalized constituent nodes are presented for the fast simplified successive-cancellation (fast-SSC) decoding of linear kernels-mixed multi-kernel polar codes. Results show that the proposed method achieves latency reduction and preserves the error-correction performance.

Fast Successive-Cancellation List Flip Decoding of Polar Codes

Nghia Doan, Seyyed Ali Hashemi, Warren J. Gross

This work presents a fast successive-cancellation list flip (Fast-SCLF) decoding algorithm for polar codes that addresses the high latency issue associated with the successive-cancellation list flip (SCLF) decoding algorithm. We first propose a bit-flipping strategy tailored to the state-of-the-art fast successive-cancellation list (FSCL) decoding that avoids tree-traversal in the binary tree representation of SCLF, thus reducing the latency of the decoding process. We then derive a parameterized path selection error model to accurately estimate the bit index at which the correct decoding path is eliminated from the initial FSCL decoding. The trainable parameter is optimized online based on an efficient supervised learning framework. Simulation results show that for a polar code of length 512 with 256 information bits, with similar error-correction performance and memory consumption, the proposed Fast-SCLF decoder reduces up to 73.4% of the average decoding latency of the SCLF decoder with the same list size at the frame error rate of 10−4, while incurring a maximum computational complexity overhead of 27.6%. For the same polar code of length 512 with 256 information bits and at practical signal-to-noise ratios, the proposed decoder with list size 4 reduces 89.3% and 43.7% of the average complexity and decoding latency of the FSCL decoder with list size 32 (FSCL-32), respectively, while also reducing 83.2% of the memory consumption of FSCL-32. The significant improvements of the proposed decoder come at the cost of 0.07 dB error-correction performance degradation compared with FSCL-32.

Construction and Decoding Algorithms for for Polar Codes based on $2\times2$ Non-Binary Kernels

Peihong Yuan, Fabian Steiner

Polar codes based on $2\times2$ non-binary kernels are discussed in this work. The kernel over $\text{GF}(q)$ is selected by maximizing the polarization effect and using Monte-Carlo simulation. Belief propagation (BP) and successive cancellation (SC) based decoding algorithms are extended to non-binary codes. Additionally, a successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding with a pruned tree is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed decoder performs very close to a conventional SCL decoder with significantly lower complexity.
