Abstract

A survey of modern cryogenic electronics patents is the focus of this article. Modern patent databases such as PatSearch, Espacenet, and Orbit Questel were used to conduct an information search. Patent families related to cryogenic electronics over the past 20 years have been identified. The dynamics of patenting in this area is shown. The world leaders in the number of patents are revealed. The largest number of patents is registered in China. IBM holds the most patents in this field worldwide. Cryogenic electronics are the most dynamically developing industry. Modern commercially attractive solutions are associated with the development of a quantum computer. The development of wireless systems of qubit control and reading is the most relevant. It was found that there is no available information about the possibility of using an industrially produced electronic component base to create cryogenic electronics devices. Electronic components specially designed for cryogenic conditions are most often used, as a rule, using the superconductivity effect.

Recent progress of superconducting electronics in China

Chunguang Li, Jia Wang, Yun Yi Wu +18 more

It has been nearly 110 years since the discovery of superconductors, and more than 30 years since the discovery of high temperature superconductors (HTS). Great progress has been made in the application of superconducting electronics in the last two decades. HTS microwave devices have shown much higher perfomance than the traditional ones and have found their ways to the industry applications in mobile communication, radar, and special communication applications. Owing to the ultrahigh sensitivity to magnetic fields and currents, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) have been used as the irresplacible sensors in geological surveying, magnetic resonanc imaging, biomagnetic imaging, and other areas. The sensitivity of superconducting radiation detectors such as superconducting SIS mixer, superconducting hot electron bolometer, superconducting transition edge sensor, superconducting nanowire single photon detector, and superconducting microwave kinetic inductance detector are near the quantum limitation. They are now key technology in geophysics, astrophysics, quantum information science, biomedicine, and so on. Superconducting Josephson parametric amplifier has become a key element for superconducting quantum computing. Superconducting integrated circuit has been included in the international roadmap for devices and systems, and shows that having the potential to become one of the mainstreams for post-Moore information processing technology. In metrology, superconducting Josephson effect and Josephson junction array devices have been widely used in the redefinition of quantum voltage reference and basic units of the International system of Units. Superconducting electronics plays an important role in the current quantum information technology boom, which in turn promotes the development of superconducting electronics. This review will brief introduce the research and application of superconducting electronics in China in recent years.

Cryogenic Electronics and Quantum Information Processing

D. Scott Holmes

The goal of this International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS) chapter is to survey, catalog, and assess the status of technologies in the areas of cryogenic electronics and quantum information processing. Application drivers are identified for sufficiently developed technologies and application needs are mapped as a function of time against projected capabilities to identify challenges requiring research and development effort.

A Review on Quantum Computing: Qubits, Cryogenic Electronics and Cryogenic MOSFET Physics

Farzan Jazaeri, Arnout Beckers, Armin Tajalli +1 more

Quantum computing (QC) has already entered the industrial landscape and several multinational corporations have initiated their own research efforts. So far, many of these efforts have been focusing on superconducting qubits, whose industrial progress is currently way ahead of all other qubit implementations. This paper briefly reviews the progress made on the silicon-based QC platform, which is highly promising to meet the scale-up challenges by leveraging the semiconductor industry. We look at different types of qubits, the advantages of silicon, and techniques for qubit manipulation in the solid state. Finally, we discuss the possibility of co-integrating silicon qubits with FET-based, cooled front-end electronics, and review the device physics of MOSFETs at deep cryogenic temperatures.

Interfacing qubits: Cryogenic control electronics

Lotte Geck, Stefan van Waasen, C. Degenhardt

We compare our approach of placing the electronics as close to the qubits as possible with other approaches like the cryogenic use of FPGAs or scaling of room temperature electronics [3] [4]. Especially the connectivity towards room temperature is a key aspect and will be examined in detail. Next to connectivity, other important challenges for the control electronics are area demand and power consumption. Both have been investigated and the figures of merit of different implementations will be shown. The placement of the electronics next to the qubits into the cryogenic environment shows additional advantages like improved noise behaviour. We will show how this aspect influences the choice of component architectures. For demonstration of the suitability of our approach first results for a modelled electronic system will be presented.
