Abstract

We present a novel covariant relativistic guidance formula à la de Broglie-Bohm derived from conserved quantities associated with the Lagrangian of the Dirac equation in a 1+1-dimensional spacetime. In line with the standard guidance formula of Bohmian mechanics, this generalized guidance formula incorporates space-time derivatives of the Dirac spinor phases and consistently reproduces relativistic features such as mass-dependent trajectories and zitterbewegung. We formally show that this formulation explicitly reveals how the relativistic quantum potential affects the trajectories. Using numerical simulations, we compare these trajectories with those presented in the usual approaches. Finally, we show how the guidance formula naturally transitions to the standard de Broglie-Bohm theory in the non-relativistic limit and gives additional contributions in the expansions giving new insight into the zitterbewegung in pilot-wave theories.

Relativistic Bohmain Mechanics

Jafar Khodagholizadeh, Javad Kazemi, Alireza Babazadeh

In this paper we generalize the ideas of de Broglie and Bohm to the relativistic case which is based on the relativistic Schrödinger equation. In this regard, the relativistic forms of the guidance equation and quantum potential are derived. In our formulation of Relativistic Bohmian Mechanic, the quantum equilibrium hypothesis $(ρ=|ψ|^{2})$ and the probabilistic interpretation of the wave function are not an intrinsic feature of the theory as well as expected from the theoretical structure of Bohmian mechanics but still we can extract the statistical predictions of this theory. In fact with assuming the quantum equilibrium hypothesis in non-relativistic case and then acceleration to particles by an external field we go to the relativistic regime. So in this case the quantum equilibrium would not be established and theory will have testable predictions that can be experienced, or this will be compared to the result of relativistic quantum mechanics. In some simple cases such calculations have been done.

Bohmian Trajectories Within Hilbert Space Based Quantum Mechanics. Solution of the Measurement Problem

Tulsi Dass

de Broglie-Bohm theory (dBBT), treating quantum particles as point objects moving along well defined (Bohmian) trajectories, offers an appealing solution of the measurement problem in quantum mechanics; it has, however, problems relating to spin, relativity and lack of proper integration with the Hilbert space based framework. In this work, we present a consistent formalism which has the traditional state-observable framework integrated with the desirable features of dBBT. We adopt ensemble interpretation for the Schrodinger wave function $ψ$. Given a Schrodinger wave function $ψ$, we use its value $ψ_0$ at some fixed time (say, $t = 0$) to define the probability measure $|ψ_0|^2 {\rm d}x$ on the system configuration space $M$ ($=\mathbb{R}^n$). On the resulting probability space $\mathcal{M}_0$, we introduce a stochastic process $ξ(t)$ corresponding to the Heisenberg position operator $X_H(t)$ such that, in the Heisenberg state $|ψ_h\rangle$ corresponding to $ψ_0$, the expectation value of $X_H(t)$ equals that of $ξ(t)$ in $\mathcal{M}_0$. This condition leads to the de Broglie-Bohm guidance equation for the sample paths of the process $ξ(t)$ which are, therefore, Bohmian trajectories supposedly representing time-evolutions of individual members of the $ψ_0$-ensemble. Stochastic processes and Bohmian trajectories corresponding to observables with discrete eigenvalues (in particular spin) are treated by extending the configuration space to the spectral space of the commutative algebra obtained by adding appropriate discrete observables to the position observables. Pauli's equation is treated as an example. A straightforward derivation of von Neumann's projection rule employing the Schrodinger-Bohm evolution of individual systems along their Bohmian trajectories is given. Some comments on the potential application of the formalism developed here to quantum mechanics of the universe are included.

Consequences of a two-time relativistic Bohmian model

Giuseppe Raguní

Abstract Effects of a Bohmian type quantum-relativistic theory are explored. The model is obtained by introducing a new and independent time parameter whose relative motions are not directly observable and cause quantum uncertainties of the physical observables. Unlike the usual de Broglie–Bohm theories, the Quantum Potential does not directly affect the observable motion, but determines the one that is relative to the new time variable. It turns out that the Zitterbewegung of a free particle, of which a more general law is obtained, is the key example of these hidden motions and, through it, it seems possible to give physical reality to the Feynman’s paths. A relativistic revision of the uncertainty principle is also derived from the theory.

Observation of relativistic Bohmian dynamics

Yunfei Wang, Hui Wang, Tong Zhang +5 more

Bohmian mechanics, also referred to as the de Broglie-Bohm pilot-wave theory, represents a deterministic and nonlocal interpretation of quantum mechanics. Central to this framework is a description of quantum motion in terms of particle trajectories, whose reconciliation with relativity remains a fundamental challenge. Although relativistic guidance laws have been proposed, their predicted dynamics has remained experimentally untested. Here we use weak measurements in a single-photon interferometer to jointly reconstruct the photon energy and momentum weak values and the associated relativistic velocity field. The reconstructed average trajectories agree with theoretical predictions. Near destructive interference, the flow exhibits local reconstructed velocities exceeding the speed of light and negative values of the effective squared-mass parameter. Our results establish an experimental basis for investigating the physical meaning of quantum trajectories and their role in describing motion in relativistic spacetime.

Aspects of Single-Particle Bohmian Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

David L. Bartley

The connection between the (orthodox) single-particle Newton-Wigner position and the Bohm/de Broglie hidden-particle position in the relativistic regime is investigated. The effect of non-positive excursions of the ensemble density for extreme cases of positive-energy waves is easily computed using an integral of the equations of motion developed here and is interpreted in terms of virtual-like pair creation and annihilation beneath the Compton wavelength. A Bohm-theoretic description of the acausal explosion of Newton-Wigner-localized states is presented in detail for spin-0 particles in attempt to relate Bohm/de Broglie and orthodox positions. Spin-1/2 particles are considered as well with the assumption that the convective current component describes ensemble dynamics as with the spin-0 theory. For spin-1/2 particles, a specific second-rank tensor is defined in terms of Dirac spinors for generalizing from simply a quantum potential to a stress tensor required to account for the force of pilot wave on particle. A simple dependence of the stress tensor on a two-component spin pseudovector field is determined for approaching a non-relativistic limit. Consistency is found with an earlier non-relativistic theory of objects with spin.

Relativistic Bohmian Physics, with a Microscopic Interpretation

Stephane Herman Maes

The extension of Bohmian mechanics to the relativistic domain, and to quantum field theory presents specific theoretical difficulties. The non-local nature of the pilot-wave guidance equations inherently requires a temporal ordering of spacelike separated events. Historically, this requirement has been satisfied by introducing an arbitrary preferred foliation of spacetime, which leads to covariance concerns. Furthermore, the standard Bohmian particle model struggles to accommodate particle creation and annihilation events, which are characteristic of quantum field theory (QFT). This paper constructs a theoretical framework that is rigorously Lorentz-invariant, and compatible with QFT. The proposed synthesis couples the Tomonaga-Schwinger equation for the relativistic wave functional with a hypersurface Bohm-Dirac model (HBDM). To ensure Lorentz invariance without adding absolute spatiotemporal structure, the necessary foliation is covariantly determined by the universal wave function. To address particle non-conservation, the deterministic trajectories are supplemented by a Bell-type stochastic Markov jump process defined on Fock space, utilizing minimal jump rates derived directly from the interaction Hamiltonian. A hybrid model is adopted, assigning localized particle beables to fermions, and continuous field beables to bosons. The exact equivariance of the probability distributions across the covariantly defined leaves of the foliation is proven, demonstrating that the model reproduces the empirical predictions of standard regularized QFT. In an appendix, we discuss the modeling of neutrinos. Finally, this framework is interpreted with the multi-fold theory. In this context, the covariantly determined foliation emerges physically from a discrete, non-commutative spacetime concretized by 2D random walks of massless Higgs bosons. The multi-fold mechanism and the E/G conjecture (entanglement is gravity) provide a local, physical model for the non-local Bohmian guidance equations, while space-time matter induction and scattering explain the origin of the proposed hybrid field-particle beables as patterns and condensates of these random walks. Sizes or scales also align with multi-fold modeling of QFT with 2D random walks, and spacetime non-commutativity to support Quantum Physics and Fermions. These add to many examples where the multi-fold preons as massless Higgs bosons can microscopically interpretate Quantum Physics behaviors.
