Abstract

The article confirms the increasing level of involvement of the international community in the development of quantum technologies. In the scientific space in the domestic segment, the authors have identified a significant lag between the level and quality of existing educational programs of higher educational institutions in relation to international practical achievements in the field of development and programming of quantum computing devices. In order to eliminate the existing scientific and methodological gap, it is recommended to introduce relevant subjects into the educational programs of enlarged groups of training areas 09.00.00 and 10.00.00 as separate disciplines, or into already existing [disciplines], and expand them to study the possibilities of quantum programming methods. Based on their own teaching experience, the authors propose a possible strategy for making appropriate changes, as well as options for adjusting the work programs of disciplines that include tasks for programming quantum computing devices.

A COMPUTAÇÃO QUÂNTICA E O DESAFIO DA CAPACITAÇÃO TECNOLÓGICA

Mariana Godoy Vazquez Miano, Bianca Belila Rusinelli, Maurício Messias de Souza

This article explores educational initiatives for teaching quantum technologies in schools and universities, highlighting their purposes, methodologies, and challenges. In order to bring students closer to the fundamental concepts of quantum technologies, several teaching programs adopt interactive activities and simulators, offering a practical and intuitive introduction to the subject. The need for qualified professionals in the area is growing, because of the advancement of quantum computing, a great demand for specialized labor is expected in the coming years. Industries in several sectors already recognize the potential of this technology, reinforcing the urgency of training professionals capable of developing and applying quantum solutions. An exploratory survey was conducted of institutions that have integrated SPINQ quantum computers, compact devices that are relatively more affordable than traditional quantum computers, which offer a practical and interactive experience. With them, students visualize theoretical concepts in a practical context, promoting greater understanding and interest in the field. However, the adoption of quantum computers in education faces substantial challenges. High costs, limited infrastructure and a lack of specialized teachers are the main barriers, especially in countries with lower investment in education. Thus, while quantum technologies show great educational potential, their implementation requires significant structural investments to become viable and effective.

On the Definition of Quantum Programming Modules

Pedro Sánchez, Diego Alonso

There are no doubts that quantum programming and, in general, quantum computing, is one of the most promising areas within computer science and one of the areas where most expectations are being placed in recent years. Although the days when reliable and affordable quantum computers will be available is still a long way off, the explosion of programming languages for quantum programming has grown exponentially in recent years. The software engineering community has been quick to react to the need to adopt and adapt well-known tools and methods for software development, and for the design of new ones tailored to this new programming paradigm. However, many key aspects for its success depend on the establishment of an appropriate conceptual framework for the conception and design of quantum programs. This article discusses the concept of module, key in the software engineering discipline, and establishes initial criteria for determining the cohesion and coupling levels of a module in the field of quantum programming as a first step towards a sound quantum software engineering. As detailed in the article, the conceptual differences between classical and quantum computing are so pronounced that the translation of classical concepts to the new programming approach is not straightforward.

Teaching Quantum Computing through a Practical Software-driven Approach

Mariia Mykhailova, Krysta M. Svore

Quantum computing harnesses quantum laws of nature to enable new types of algorithms, not efficiently possible on traditional computers, that may lead to breakthroughs in crucial areas like materials science and chemistry. There is rapidly growing demand for a quantum workforce educated in the basics of quantum computing, in particular in quantum programming. However, there are few offerings for non-specialists and little information on best practices for training computer science and engineering students. In this report we describe our experience teaching an undergraduate course on quantum computing using a practical, software-driven approach. We centered our course around teaching quantum algorithms through hands-on programming, reducing the significance of traditional written assignments and relying instead on self-paced programming exercises ("Quantum Katas''), a variety of programming assignments, and a final project. We observed that the programming sections of the course helped students internalize theoretical material presented during the lectures. In the survey results, students indicated that the programming exercises and the final project contributed the most to their learning process. We describe the motivation for centering the course around quantum programming, discuss major artifacts used in this course, and present our lessons learned and best practices for a future improved course offering. We hope that our experience will help guide instructors who want to adopt a practical approach to teaching quantum computing and will enable more undergraduate programs to offer quantum programming as an elective.
