Nonlinear Optics of Matter Waves

We give a brief overview of how atomic physics is now developing in a way reminiscent of the optics revolution of the 1 9605. Thanks in particular to recent progress in atomic trapping and cooling, the new field of atom optics is rapidly leading to exciting new developments such as nonlinear atom optics and quantum atom optics . We illustrate these advances with examples out of our own research .

Quantum Measurements in Atom Optics

Daniel F. Walls

We review recent progress in atom optics. We describe new quantum measurements based on the entanglement of quantum states of a light field with atomic external degrees of freedom. Examples include the quantum non-demolition measurement of the photon number in a cavity and the measurement of atomic position.

Quantum Matter built from Atoms and Photons in Nanoscopic Dielectric Lattices

Harry J. Kimble

New paradigms for optical physics emerge from the integration of ultra-cold atoms with photonic crystal waveguides. I will review progress and prospects in this emerging field at the interfaces of nano-photonics, atomic physics, and quantum optics.
