Abstract

The recent development of lattice atom optics is introduced, including atomic optical lattices, atomic magnetic lattices and magneto-optical lattices, and some new results of atomic magnetic lattices and magneto-optical lattices, and some new results on the investigations of magnetic and magneto-optical lattices are reported. Afterwards, some recent progresses of dynamic process of cold atoms and Bose-Einstein-condensed atoms in optical lattices, and coherent propagation and control of quantum states are briefly reviewed. Finally, potential applications of atomic optical lattices, atomic magnetic lattices and magneto-optical lattices in the preparation of photonic crystals and so on are briefly introduced.

INTEGRATED ATOM OPTICS AND ATOM CHIP

Ji Xian-Ming, Jin Jian-ping

With the fast development and perfecting of laser cooling, trapping and manipulating of neutral atoms as well as microelectric fabrication techniques with micrometer and nanometer scale, a new branch subject of atom optics, atom optics and its atom has been formed. In this lecture, we mainly introduce integrated schemes and experimental results as well as recent progress of integrated atom optics and its atom chips, including the design schemes, microfabrication techniques and recent experimental results of atom optical elements and devices with surface microstructures, magnetic microstructure integrated atom optics, all optical microstructure integrated atom optics, and magneto-optical microstructure integrated atom optics and their atom chips. Finally, design principles of integrated atom chip and its open problems are discussed, and some potential application of integrated atom optics and its future development are briefly looked ahead.

Optical lattices, ultracold atoms and quantum information processing

Dieter Jaksch

We review novel methods for the investigation, control and manipulation of neutral atoms in optical lattices. These setups allow unprecedented quantum control over large numbers of atoms and thus are very promising for applications in quantum information processing. After introducing optical lattices we discuss the superfluid (SF) and Mott insulating (MI) states of neutral atoms trapped in such lattices and investigate the SF-MI transition as observed experimentally recently. In the second part of the paper we give an overview of proposals for quantum information processing and show different ways to entangle the trapped atoms, in particular the usage of cold collisions and Rydberg atoms. Finally, we discuss briefly the implementation of quantum simulators, entanglement enhanced atom interferometers, and ideas for robust quantum memory in optical lattices.

The basic principles, methods and experimental results on the generation of cold or ultracold atomic beams and their recent progresses are reviewed. The schemes to produce cold or ultracold atomic beams by laser cooling (Doppler, sub-Doppler and sub-recoil cooling) and magneto-optical trapping technique are introduced in detail, and the applications of cold or ultracold atomic beams in the studies of basic physical problems and atom optics are briefly introduced.

Magnetic excitation of ultra-cold atoms trapped in optical lattice

Xing-Dong Zhao, Ying-Ying Zhang, Wu‐Ming Liu

Spinor condensates trapped in optical lattices have become potential candidates for multi-bit quantum computation due to their long coherence and controllability. But first, we need to understand the generation and regulation of spin and magnetism in the system. This paper reviews the origin and manipulation of the magnetism of atomic spin chains in optical lattices. The theoretical study of the whole process is described in this paper, including laser cooling, the spinor Bose-Einstein condensate preparations, the optical lattice, and the atomic spin chain. Then, the generation and manipulation of magnetic excitations are discussed, including the preparation of magnetic solitons. Finally, we discuss how to apply atomic spin chains to quantum simulation. The theoretical study of magnetic excitations in optical lattices will play a guiding role when the optical lattice is used in cold atomic physics, condensed matter physics and quantum information.

Cold bosons in optical lattices

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov

Basic properties of cold Bose atoms in optical lattices are reviewed. The main principles of correct self-consistent description of arbitrary systems with Bose-Einstein condensate are formulated. Theoretical methods for describing regular periodic lattices are presented. A special attention is paid to the discussion of Bose-atom properties in the frame of the boson Hubbard model. Optical lattices with arbitrary strong disorder, induced by random potentials, are treated. Possible applications of cold atoms in optical lattices are discussed, with an emphasis of their usefulness for quantum information processing and quantum computing. An important feature of the present review article, distinguishing it from other review works, is that theoretical fundamentals here are not just mentioned in brief, but are thoroughly explained. This makes it easy for the reader to follow the principal points without the immediate necessity of resorting to numerous publications in the field.
