Luttinger Liquid with Attraction and One Impurity: Exact Solution

Abstract

The exact solution to the problem of scattering of one-dimensional attracted fermions on a point impurity, which exists in the Kane–Fisher model is analyzed for a Luttinger parameter equal to 2. The expression obtained for the frequency dependence of the coefficient of fermion reflection from an impurity demonstrates impossibility of extrapolation of results for a relatively weak fermion–fermion interaction to the range of coupling constants on the order of unity.

Quantum impurity in a Luttinger liquid: Exact solution of the Kane-Fisher model

Colin Rylands, Natan Andrei

A Luttinger liquid coupled to a quantum impurity describes a large number of physical systems. The Hamiltonian consists of left- and right-moving fermions interacting among themselves via a density-density coupling and scattering off a localized transmitting and reflecting impurity. We solve exactly the Hamiltonian by means of an incoming-outgoing scattering Bethe basis which properly incorporates all scattering processes. A related model, the weak-tunneling model, wherein the impurity is replaced by a tunnel junction, is solved by the same method. The consistency of the construction is established through a generalized Yang-Baxter relation. Periodic boundary conditions are imposed and the resulting Bethe ansatz equations are derived by means of the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz approach. We derive the spectrum of the model for all coupling constant regimes and calculate the impurity free energy. We discuss the low energy behavior of the systems for both repulsive and attractive interactions.

On Exact Solutions for a Luttinger Liquid with One Impurity

V. V. Afonin, Victor Yu. Petrov

Reasons for the existence of exact solutions of the Luttinger model have been discussed. It has been shown that scattering by impurities at certain electron-electron coupling constants can be written in terms of Fermi quasiparticles exactly taking into account the electron-electron interaction. This circumstance significantly simplifies the analysis and in some cases leads to the existence of exact solutions.

Luttinger liquid with one impurity: Equivalent field theory and duality

V. V. Afonin, Victor Yu. Petrov

We derive by functional integral method one-dimensional theory equivalent to Luttinger liquid with one impurity. It is shown that the single quantity has to be calculated for the formulation the effective field theory is the electron density jump at the impurity. We show that duality which relates models with electron-electron attraction and repulsion, and simultaneous exchange of transition and reflection coefficients, is an exact property of the theory.

Impurity in a Luttinger liquid: A numerical study of the finite-size energy spectrum and of the orthogonality catastrophe exponent

Shaojin Qin, Michele Fabrizio, Lu Yu

The behavior of a single impurity in a one-dimensional Luttinger liquid is numerically investigated by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. By analyzing the finite-size scaling behavior of the low-energy spectrum, we confirm the theoretical prediction of Kane and Fisher [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 1220 (1992)] both for attractive and repulsive interactions. Moreover, we calculate the exponent of the orthogonality catastrophe, which gives a further support to the above theoretical prediction.

On the Exact Solution for a Luttinger Liquid with Repulsion and a Single Point Impurity

V. V. Afonin, Victor Yu. Petrov

Abstract The expression for the conductance of a 1D channel, which has been obtained using the well-known exact solution, is analyzed. It is shown that in the case of strong electron—electron interaction, the slowest (linear in frequency) asymptotics of the conductance is determined by the behavior of electron—electron interaction in the region of transition from 1D to 3D motion realized near the impurity.
