Observation about the Classical Electromagnetic Gauge Transformation and Its Quantum Correspondence

Abstract

Using the Landau and symmetric gauges for the vector potential of a constant magnetic field and the quantum problem of a charged particle moving on a flat surface, we show the classical electromagnetic gauge transformation does not correspond to a one-dimensional unitary group transformation U(1) of the wave function for the quantum case. In addition, with the re-examination of the relation between the magnetic field B and its vector potential A, we found that, in order to have a consistent formulation of the dynamics of the charged particle with both expressions, we must have that B=∇×A if and only if B≠0.

Constants of Motion and Quantum Non-Relativistic Motion of a Charged Particle on a Flat Surface under Constant Magnetic Field

Gustavo V. López, Jorge A. Lizarraga

The motion of a charged particle moving on a flat surface is studied through the constants of motion associated with the system, given the magnetic gauge. The usual Landau’ solution and the non-separable solution for the Landau’s gauge are found, and a new non-separable solution for the symmetric gauge is given. As a consequence of this, the quantization of the magnetic flux results from the invariance of the solutions under the unitary transformations which arise from the operator’s constants of motion.

Quantum Charged Particle in a Flat Box under Static Electromagnetic Field with Landau’s Gauge and Special Case with Symmetric Gauge

Gustavo V. López, Jorge A. Lizarraga, Omar J. P. Bravo

We summarize our results about the quantization of a charged particle motion without spin inside a flat box under a static electromagnetic field with Landau’s gauge for the magnetic field, where Fourier’s transformation was used to analyze the problem, to point out that there exists a wave function which is different to that one given by Landau with the same Landau’s levels. The quantization of the magnetic flux is deduced differently to previous one, and a new solution is presented for the case of symmetric gauge of the magnetic field, and having the same Landau’s levels.

External gauge field-coupled quantum dynamics: Gauge choices, Heisenberg algebra representations and gauge invariance in general, and the Landau problem in particular

Jan Govaerts A

Even though its classical equations of motion are then left invariant, when an action is redefined by an additive total derivative or divergence term (in time, in the case of a mechanical system) such a transformation induces non-trivial consequences for the system’s canonical phase space formulation. This is even more true and then in more subtle ways for the canonically quantized dynamics, with, in particular, an induced transformation in the unitary configuration space representation of the Heisenberg algebra being used for the quantum system. When coupled to a background gauge field, such considerations become crucial for a proper understanding of the consequences for the system’s quantum dynamics of gauge transformations of that classical external background gauge field, while under such transformations, the system’s degrees of freedom, abstract quantum states and quantum dynamics are certainly strictly invariant. After a detailed analysis of these different points in a general context, these are then illustrated specifically in the case of the quantum Landau problem with its classical external background magnetic vector potential for which the most general possible parametrized gauge choice is implemented herein. The latter discussion aims as well to clarify some perplexing statements in the literature regarding the status of gauge choices to be made for the magnetic vector potential for that quantum system. The role of the global spacetime symmetries of the Landau problem and their gauge invariant Noether charges is then also emphasized.

Unitary transformation technique for the study of quantum dynamics of charged particle in time-dependent electromagnetic field

Rachid Ahmim, Nabil Baouche, Askri Souhaila +2 more

In this paper, we present a unitary transformation technique to solve the equation of quantum dynamics of a charged particle moving in a time-dependent electromagnetic field. The primary advantage of the technique lies in the connection of this technique with one of the essential features of the system which is the gauge. The gauge has been chosen in a way where the first three dimensional Hamiltonian transformed easily through this technique to a two dimensional coupled problem. This problem is central in several areas of physics, including solid-state and plasma physics, where the understanding of the behavior of charged particles in the presence of time-dependent electromagnetic fields is essential to explore the behavior of various phenomena. The complete solution of the Schrödinger equation is presented and the propagator is also determined using this technique. This technique is also used to shows how the problem can be reduced to a two-dimensional system of coupled harmonic oscillators, each subjected to a time-dependent linear potential. This reduction simplifies the analysis by transforming the problem into a form that can be mapped onto a well-established model, which has been previously studied using the path integral formalism.

Operator Gauge Transformations in Nonrelativistic Quantum Electrodynamics

Raymond Dale Gray

A system of nonrelativistic charged particles and radiation is canonically quantized in the Coulomb gauge and Maxwell's equations in quantum electrodynamics are derived. By requiring form invariance of the Schrodinger equation under a space and time dependent unitary transformation, operator gauge transformations on the quantized electromagnetic potentials and state vectors are introduced. These gauge transformed potentials have the same form as gauge transformations in non-Abelian gauge field theories. A gauge-invariant method for solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation in quantum electrodynamics is given. Maxwell's equations are written in a form which holds in all gauges and which has formal similarity to the equations of motion of non-Abelian gauge fields. A gauge-invariant derivation of conservation of energy in quantum electrodynamics is given. An operator gauge transformation is made to the multipolar gauge in which the potentials are expressed in terms of the electromagnetic fields. The multipolar Hamiltonian is shown to be the minimally coupled Hamiltonian with the electromagnetic potentials in the multipolar gauge. The model of a charged harmonic oscillator in a single-mode electromagnetic field is considered as an example. The gauge-invariant procedure for solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation is used to obtain the gauge-invariant probabilities that the oscillator is in an energy eigenstate For comparison, the conventional approach is also used to solve the harmonic oscillator problem and is shown to give gauge-dependent amplitudes.

On the Gauge Invariance of the Transition Probability of a Charged Particle in Electromagnetic Field

Qian Shang-Wu, Gu Zhi-Yu

This paper suggests a principle to find a unitary operator U which transforms non-physical quantity, zero-potential Hamiltonian H 0 , into true physical quantity UH 0 U † for a charged particle in classical electromagnetic field, and puts forward a unified form of constructing gauge-independent transition probabilities in this case. Different methods correspond to different unitary operators which satisfy the above-mentioned principle.
