Abstract

We summarize our results about the quantization of a charged particle motion without spin inside a flat box under a static electromagnetic field with Landau’s gauge for the magnetic field, where Fourier’s transformation was used to analyze the problem, to point out that there exists a wave function which is different to that one given by Landau with the same Landau’s levels. The quantization of the magnetic flux is deduced differently to previous one, and a new solution is presented for the case of symmetric gauge of the magnetic field, and having the same Landau’s levels.

Constants of Motion and Quantum Non-Relativistic Motion of a Charged Particle on a Flat Surface under Constant Magnetic Field

Gustavo V. López, Jorge A. Lizarraga

The motion of a charged particle moving on a flat surface is studied through the constants of motion associated with the system, given the magnetic gauge. The usual Landau’ solution and the non-separable solution for the Landau’s gauge are found, and a new non-separable solution for the symmetric gauge is given. As a consequence of this, the quantization of the magnetic flux results from the invariance of the solutions under the unitary transformations which arise from the operator’s constants of motion.

Observation about the Classical Electromagnetic Gauge Transformation and Its Quantum Correspondence

Gustavo V. López, Jorge A. Lizarraga

Using the Landau and symmetric gauges for the vector potential of a constant magnetic field and the quantum problem of a charged particle moving on a flat surface, we show the classical electromagnetic gauge transformation does not correspond to a one-dimensional unitary group transformation U(1) of the wave function for the quantum case. In addition, with the re-examination of the relation between the magnetic field B and its vector potential A, we found that, in order to have a consistent formulation of the dynamics of the charged particle with both expressions, we must have that B=∇×A if and only if B≠0.

Electron wave-functions in a magnetic field

D. K. Sunko

The problem of a single electron in a magnetic field is revisited from first principles. It is shown that the standard quantization, used by Landau, is inconsistent for this problem, whence Landau's wave functions spontaneously break the gauge symmetry of translations in the plane. Because of this Landau's (and Fock's) wave functions have a spurious second quantum number. The one-body wave function of the physical orbit, with only one quantum number, is derived, and expressed as a superposition of Landau's wave functions. Conversely, it is shown that Landau's wave functions are a limiting case of physical solutions of a different problem, where two quantum numbers naturally appear. When the translation gauge symmetry is respected, the degeneracy related to the choice of orbit center does not appear in the one-body problem.

An algebraic approach to a charged particle in an uniform magnetic field

D. Ojeda-Guillén, M. Salazar–Ramírez, R. D. Mota +1 more

We study the problem of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field with two different gauges, known as Landau and symmetric gauges. By using a similarity transformation in terms of the displacement operator we show that, for the Landau gauge, the eigenfunctions for this problem are the harmonic oscillator number coherent states. In the symmetric gauge, we calculate the $SU(1,1)$ Perelomov number coherent states for this problem in cylindrical coordinates in a closed form. Finally, we show that these Perelomov number coherent states are related to the harmonic oscillator number coherent states by the contraction of the $SU(1,1)$ group to the Heisenberg-Weyl group.

Detailed solution of the problem of Landau states in a symmetric gauge

Orion Ciftja

Abstract Understanding the quantum problem of a free charged particle undergoing two-dimensional motion in a perpendicular uniform, constant magnetic field is necessary to the comprehension of some very important phenomena in physics. In particular, a grasp of the nature of the Landau states in a symmetric gauge is crucial to explain the underlying principles of quantum Hall effects. In this work we provide a step-by-step solution of this quantum problem in a pedagogical fashion that is easy to follow by an audience of undergraduate students and prospective physics teachers. This approach should enable undergraduate students to comprehend all the technical mathematical details involved in the process. Such details are routinely missing from mainstream quantum mechanics textbooks. In particular, this study allows a broad audience of students and teachers to gradually absorb knowledge not only on basic principles of quantum mechanics, but also on various special mathematical functions that are encountered in the process.

Motion of a Wave Packet Constructed from Landau Gauge Solutions

D. M. Thomson

The eigensolutions of the Schrödinger equation for the motion of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field depend on the choice of electromagnetic gauge. In the Landau gauge it is hard to discern a relationship between the eigensolutions and the circular or helical orbits of classical theory. In this paper a wave packet is constructed from the Landau gauge eigensolutions which simulates the classical motion in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. Some properties of the wave packet are discussed.
